Poverty and Perseverance: David Lindsay-Abaire and “Getting Out”by Director, Jocelyn A. Brown and Dramaturgs, Katie Dumas and Lena Romano

David Lindsay-Abaire grew up in a working-class family in South Boston, much like those depicted in Good People. His father sold fruit out of the back of an old van and his mother worked on a circuit-board assembly line. Through his inspired stories and poems which he wrote for the Boys and Girls Club newspaper, Lindsay-Abaire earned a scholarship to Milton Academy at age eleven. Although only seven miles away in the suburbs, taking the bus ride every day to this elite school introduced him to a completely different world of affluence and opportunity. Lindsay-Abaire said he felt like an outsider in both environments, consciously keeping “his head down and not putting on airs,” while simultaneously trying to blend in at school, not wanting anyone to know he was from the poor neighborhood. With a foot in both worlds, Lindsay-Abaire lived class differences every day and it shaped his identity, even as his new opportunities provided him the opportunity to “get out” of Southie. It can be incredibly difficult to “get out,” to escape the cycle of poverty into which poor families stay impoverished for generations. Living paycheck to paycheck, most people lack the resources necessary to get out of poverty. Lindsay-Abaire waited to write Good People until he felt his writing was mature enough to do justice to the textured people, history and culture of his home. While not autobiographical, the traits and situations of the characters in Good People stem from Lindsay-Abaire’s own memories. The play expertly reveals the gamut of challenges that the people of South Boston were born into -- high rates of single mother families, joblessness, low quality education and much more. Often, once an impoverished individual has just enough resources saved away, they are once again held back by limited time and unreliable connections. Lindsay-Abaire said he didn’t set out to write a play that deals explicitly with poverty and class. “I thought,” he said. “Let me write about the people I know and love and class will bubble up inevitably.” Good People asks us to question and wrestle with what it means to be a good person, or “good people” in Southie, and how we determine success in our lives. By delving into the lives and perspectives of both the “haves” and the “have-nots,” which rarely intersect in such an authentic and balanced way, Good People brings us together to explore the complexities of poverty, success, and the validity of the American Dream. In David Lindsay-Abaire’s own words, “We have this myth that if you work hard, you can accomplish anything. It’s not a very American thing to say, but I don’t think that’s true. It’s true for a lot of people, but you need other things to succeed. You need luck, you need opportunity, and you need the life skills to recognize what an opportunity is.”

with the Chance, and rejoice in being part of the Chance family. Good People gives us the delightful opportunity to bask again in the talents of an amazing Director, Jocelyn Brown, with whom we previously had the same joy for in a word, and same for Chris Murillo as set designer, Bruce Goodrich as costume designer, and Darryl Hovis on sound. These lovely people (to paraphrase Bebe!) and a host of other shockingly talented team members and a wonderfully strong cast also join in for the theatrical adventure of Good People. James received his B.A. in Theater Arts Performance from CSU Long Beach, and has studied with the Michael Chekhov Association and The Actor’s Center (NYC). James also works as a director and teaching artist. His recent directing credits include the World Premiere of Comedy of ERRORS (ACTC), and The Eight: Reindeer Monologues (Chance Theater). He has taught and directed for local middle-schools,

Musical Theater Playground, and for Chance Theater’s Speak Up youth program.

Karen O’Hanlon (Education Director) is delighted to be a Chance Resident Artist who previously appeared on the Chance Stage in The Laramie Project & Laramie Project: 10 years later (LA Stage Times’ Top Ten of

2013) , Passion Play (Orange County Premiere) and The Eight: Reindeer Monologues. As the Education Director, she is incredibly proud of her work with Veterans in the Veterans Initiative Program and Chance Theater’s Youth and Teen programs that focus on empowering artists through creative expression while building empathy. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Theater from East Stroudsburg University. She would like to thank her husband Nick for his endless support.

Sarah DuVal (House Manager) Ten years ago my good friend Heather invited me to her theater to see I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change. Before the show even started, the actors started mingling and interacting

with the audience. Not entirely sure that it was part of the show, slightly panicked, I turned to Heather and asked if they were supposed to be doing that. She laughed and said yes. Two years later, I became a sustaining member and started helping building sets and hanging lights, which continued into 2014 when we opened our current space. Little did I know, at that time, that I had met a group of people that would soon become a second family. Ten years later, I’m super excited and proud to say that I’m the House Manger here at the Chance. Previous experience includes working in the ticketing department at SCFTA and working in the Chance office.

Courtny Greenough (Company Manager) is a Resident Artist and Company Manager of Chance Theater. Previous shows with the Chance: James and the Giant Peach, Claudio Quest, Dogfight, Hairspray,

In the Heights, Lysistrata Jones, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, The Laramie Project & The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later, West Side Story, Reborning (Back Stage Critic’s Pick), Jerry Springer: The Opera (Ovation Award - Best Musical, Intimate Theater), Welcome Home, Jenny Sutter (So Cal Premiere), HAIR: The American Tribal Love Rock Musical (Stage Manager, five Ovation nominations, and six LADCC Award nominations), the West Coast premiere of The Girl, The Grouch and The Goat (Rehearsal Stage Manager).

10 v 20th Anniversary Season

Marc Sanford (Associate House Manager) is very happy to be a Chance Theater Resident Artist. In 1994, Marc did a production of Little Shop of Horrors at Rancho Santiago College (now known as Santa Ana

College), where he met future Chance founders Oanh Nguyen and Jeff Hellebrand. Marc first performed at the Chance in A History of the American Film as Mickey (plus 4 other characters) and soon became a Resident Artist. In 2004, Marc had to drop out of the company due to the discovery of a tumor about the size of a ping-pong ball on his optic nerve. His surgery was successful, but he moved up to the Seattle area to stay with family to recuperate. While he was up there,he attended the Seattle Film Institute where he received a Filmmaking Certificate. Marc has been a Resident Artist since June 2008.

Monika Peña (Marketing Associate) is a Chance Resident Artist and CPP Zoology graduate. Previous Chance roles include the titular role in Violet (LA Times Critic’s Choice, Ovation

Recommended), the butt-kicking Princess Fish in Claudio Quest (West Coast Premiere), The Eight: Reindeer Monologues (Dancer), Fancy Nancy: the Musical (Rhonda; 2016 & 2017), A Chorus Line (LA Times Critic’s Choice), Dogfight, Hairspray, and In the Heights (Ovation Recommended). Other favorite credits include Spring Awakening (Ilse), Beauty & the Beast (Babette), …Forum (Philia), Fiddler on the Roof (Chava), and Anything Goes (Angel Virtue). She sends a huge thank you to her generous friends & family for all the loving support they give from near and far. www.monikapena.wixsite.com/info

Ramiro Leal (Marketing Associate) moved to Los Angeles after graduating form Santa Fe University of Art and Design as a BFA Actor with a self discipline in Graphic Design and Marketing. Born and raised in
