Day 1 - 21st September 2018 (Friday): Arrive Da Nang Transfer to Hoi An (-/-/D)

Upon arrival in Da Nang (arrival flight details TBA), be met by an EXO representative and transferred to the hotel for check-in. Arrangements can be made for arriving one day in advanced.

Hoi An Historic Town is one of the many UNESCO World Heritage sites in Vietnam. Hoi An was a major Asian trading port in the 17th and 18th centuries and its architecture and relaxed lifestyle have seen little change over the years, making it a perennial favourite with travellers of all ages.

Hoi An is a charming destination offering the old-world trading port of narrow streets and traditional houses, and the beach with its new resorts and long stretches of clean white sand. In keeping with Hoi An’s heritage as a trading port, the town’s tiny shop houses now host a range of craft and artisanal shops including some of Asia’s best tailors. This afternoon enjoy a walking tour with the local guide through the historic town centre. Visit former merchants’ houses, the 400 year-old Japanese Bridge, a Chinese communal hall, the riverfront areas, etc.

NOTE – An optional 3 Night Pre-Extension to Hanoi & Ninh Binh (one night Hanoi and Two nights in Ninh Binh) can also be arranged on request – contact for more details and to discuss specific requirements.

Relax and enjoy the rest of the afternoon by the beach in Hoi An.

In the evening, enjoy a special welcome dinner with the group before heading back to the hotel.

Day 2 – 22nd September 2018 (Saturday): Hoi An (B/L/D)

Today, meet with a local conservation expert who will be able to share their knowledge of various UNESCO conservation projects taking place in this ancient trading port which dates back to the 15th century. The first stop is an ancient merchant house for a brief introduction to the current conservation projects that are taking place. With the expert, walk through a protected neighbourhood and visit three antique buildings to see conservation efforts that are underway to preserve the historical heritage of Hoi An. Their unique architecture has influences from the various cultures that flourished here during Hoi An’s heyday as a bustling international trading port in the times of antiquity.

Wander around Hoi An’s charming flower lined streets and take in sights of some of the various historical attractions there, including highlights like the historical Japanese Covered Bridge, the Communal Hall and privately-run heritage photo galleries showcasing Hoi An Ancient Town and its people. Conclude this tour with a walk through smaller streets for a look at the local life of the area, which still retains its unique cultural vibes.

After lunch, take a walk through Hoi An Ancient Town to meet a paper mask artist at his workshop. His craft is steadily disappearing as newer forms of entertainment have gradually taken over. Learn how this artist contributes to the effort of preserving his craft for future generations.

Next, create a traditional folk mask under his guidance. Using specific patterns and colours, these masks communicate a vast array of character emotions in ‘tuong’- a form of classic Vietnamese theatre which has been performed for more than eight centuries.

After creating a mask, get ready to enjoy a private 30-minute tuong performance at a simple traditional theater. Enjoy this ‘behind-the-scenes’ experience, watching characters from the play wear different masks to convey various emotions that are portrayed in the telling of a Vietnamese legend. All the while, enjoy the privilege of superior access to both the performance itself and the performers for an unforgettably intimate cultural experience.

Day 5 - 25th September 2018 (Tuesday): Hue to Ho Chi Minh (B/L/D)

Check-out after a leisurely breakfast at the hotel and be transferred to Hue Airport for the short domestic flight to Ho Chi Minh City in Southern Vietnam (request flight HUI-SGN VN1373 13:15-13:45 or similar – TBC).

In the evening get ready for an unforgettable night out in Ho Chi Minh City. Meet with a passionate foodie and walk through hidden corners of the city to discover the city’s best street food while experiencing its local culture.

Start with a stroll through a residential area where locals gather after work for dinner. See friends gossiping over an evening snack called banh trang nuong –a Vietnamese version of pizza baked in a traditional oven. Sit alongside the locals and order some of their savoury treats. Continue on foot to a small alleyway and observe the daily life at sunset -the dining, the drinking and socialising. A popular nearby street restaurant serves up the city’s best local clams. Grab a stool and dive into a few plates of delicious cooking. Watch the chefs as they whip up plate after plate, and learn the secrets of this southern delicacy.

Carry on to discover the area’s contrasting architectural styles. Tucked away is an unassuming stall selling delicious bot chien, or pan fried rice cakes with green papaya salad. While tasting the flavourful dish, the guide explains its origins.

Next, on the foodie tour of Saigon, is a short walk to Mrs. Dung’s Home Restaurant serving banh xeo, or Vietnamese pancakes and fresh spring rolls. Mrs. Dung reveals her secret methods, which is a tasty lesson to take back home.

Having sampled the savoury side of the city, get ready to cross a city intersection -an adventure in itself. Find a typical Vietnamese café to end the evening and indulge in a sweet treat. Take some time to recap the tour, enjoy a drink and listen to Vietnamese music.

Day 6 - 26th September 2018 (Wednesday): Saigon’s Hidden History with Mr. Cau (B/L/D)

Once known as the ‘Pearl of Indochina’, Saigon boasts an enormous architectural wealth, mirroring its colourful history. From the pagodas, museums and European architecture of the city’s recent past to the growing number of skyscrapers, Saigon is like a trip through time.

Meet with a respected scholar and enjoy a guided tour through the Pearl of Indochina. Start with the French colonial area with a visit to Archbishop’s Palace and its more than 200-year-old house of prayer.

Continue through the ages and encounter a local who specialises in the stretch of time that cover the Vietnam war right until today. Visit Gia Long Palace, built in 1885 combining classical Baroque architecture elements with European and Oriental influences.

Continue to a private home, famous for its role in the planning of the well-known Tet Offensive and return to the hotel. During the ride back, an optional visit to a restored opium factory is offered as well. Considering the importance of the opium trade in the first half of the last century, this is another interesting view on Saigon’s history and power struggles.

The final excursion in Vietnamese waters is to the remote island village of Hong Ngu, located only fifteen kilometers from the Vietnam-Cambodia border. Hong Ngu produces an abundance of traditional Khmer scarves, which are exported to Cambodia. Hand-woven in many homes throughout the village, we see the intricate weaving process from start to finish. Many of the villagers are embroidery artists who display their art on the balconies of their timber homes, which are built on stilts to avoid flooding in the wet season.

The residents of Hong Ngu had rarely encountered western visitors prior to the arrival of the RV Mekong Princess. Their welcome is warm and naturally friendly. Enter a local temple dedicated to a unique religion, founded in this area, named Hoa Hao.

Return by riverboat to the Mekong Princess, anchor and cross the border into Cambodia, cruising onwards towards our overnight anchorage.

At sunset, cocktails will be served before a dinner menu of Western-Oriental cuisine.

Bon Appetite!

Continue onwards to the illustrious Ta Prohm, built in the mid 12th to early 13th centuries. Ta Prohm is unique in that it has been left largely as it was found: overgrown by jungle trees and vines, with many parts of the temple crumbling to the ground. This makes the ‘Tomb Raider Temple’ one of the most picturesque and memorable of the Angkor temples. The visit will also include Banteay Kdei, a Buddhist monastery from the late 12th Century, and SrahSrang, also known as the “pool of ablutions”.A late lunch around the temples will be held before going back to the hotel.

At the end of afternoon, head to Theam’s House Art Gallery for a nice cocktail dinner in a magical place. Explore the art studio and observe various works such as lacquer ware, paintings, fine sculptures… Lim Muy Theam is a renowned Cambodian artist who draws on inspiration both from Khmer and International Contemporary design. For more than 10 years now, Theam has trained a team of artisan apprentices who work either at the studio located in the gallery, or at their home village.

This evening, after Theam’s House, attend a performance of ‘Phare, the Cambodian Circus’. Starting at 8pm, professional artists of Phare Ponleu Selpak (PPS) will perform an inspiring show suitable for people of all ages. The hour long show mixes traditional and modern theater, music, dance, acrobatics, juggling and contortion performed in a story about Cambodian lives and society. Student performances can still be seen twice weekly in Battambang but now the circus has arrived in Siem Reap!
