    ADWELCOME TO DELHI BY CYCLE!

    anh kft ulgA iftontwowheels!

    Dear friends,

For nearly one and a half years we have been running bicycle tours and itseems the sky is the limit. Many people like you have shown great enthusiasm for

our old Delhi Routes and I would like to thank you for being 'on board'.But equally commendable, is the role you have played in promoting the cycleculture in Delhi.Already popular in other cities around the world with reason, recreationalcycling in Delhi is a bit of a 'new born baby' that I take great pride in nurturingThe journey so far has been most rewarding and I can't wait to feed itsbeautiful prospects with new bicycle adventures. This season we open a new chapter in those adventures as we introduce ourfascinating, new, third route, exploring the colonial setting of 'Lutyens Delhi'

with architectural ingredients from previous Muslim empires. The 'Raj Tour' promises newer stories, more recent history and a wider lensinto contemporary India and its complex, beautiful workings!Meanwhile you can trust me to continue exploring Delhi on two wheels, sharing itwith you and hoping to create a dominant cycle culture on the capital roads.Looking forward to welcoming you again on one of our routes!

    Warm regards,

    Jack LeenaarsFounder DelhiByCycle

    SHAHJAHAN TOUR ROUTE HIGHLIGHTS

1)Shah Jahan (1592-1666): The founder ofth

Shahjahanabad and 5 Mughal ruler. His reign was theGolden Age of the Mughals. Great monuments like RedFort and Jama Masjid are his heritage to Delhi. Spent hislast days captured in Agra Fort, viewing the world famous

love monument, Taj Mahal that he built for his wife.

3)Fatehpuri Mosque (1650): Named afterFatehpuri Begum, one of the queens of Shah Jahan.

After the Indian Rising (or Mutiny) of 1857 the Britishclosed the mosque only to be re-opened again after

rdtwenty years. It's the 3 largest masjid (mosque) of the

    Walled City.

7)Red Fort (1648): Constructed by ShahJahan 'Lal Qila' was the power bastion of the Mughalsuntil 1857 when their last emperor was exiled by theBritish. From the ramparts the Indian Prime Ministeraddresses the nation at Independence Day (15 Aug). Itwas made a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2007.The Fort area is massive; 2,4 km to cycle around.

9)Karim's Restaurant: Open since1913, the place is a true Delhi institution. Thefamily history goes back to the royal kitchens ofthe Mughal emperors. The founder, HajiKarimuddin, wanted to serve 'royal food to thecommon man'. And he succeeded!

5)Civil Lines:the tranquil zone where theBritish settled en masse after the 1857 Rebellion. Apeaceful oasis and the perfect place to enjoy chai atMaharaja Lane.

2)Delite Cinema: A landmark cinema(1954) in Delhi, at the time of opening the tallestmodern building in the city! The ultimate place towatch a Bollywood movie. Try to catch a newrelease, it will give you a masala experiencenever to forget.

4)Spice market (Khari Baoli): At the northwall of Fatehpuri Mosque is the largest whole sale

spice market of Asia. Chaotic, crowded, justoverwhelming in every sense we find our way toGadodia market (1938), the spice storage area fromwhere we enjoy the great view of Old Delhi from therooftop.

8)Jama Masjid (1656): Largest mosque ofIndia, the courtyard has a capacity of 20.000

people. Literally it means Friday Mosque as it wasthe Friday praying place for Shah Jahan and hiscourt who would move in an impressive processionwith elephants from the Red Fort. Most preciousrelic kept inside is a red beard-hair of Prophet

6)Chandni Chowk: The main street of OldDelhi earned its name from the moonlight reflecting onits canal that was running through the middle of thestreet. Constructed around 1650 it was once a street ofgreat grandeur. Today it is a street of 'grand' chaos.

3)Chawri Bazar metro station: Old meets new! This 25m deep station is the pride of the Delhi metro, anambitious project started in 1998. This yellow line (part ofphase 1) was completed in 2005. Three years ahead ofschedule and within the budget! Four phases (414 km ofmetro lines) have been planned to keep Delhi mobile.

6)Yamuna River (1376 km): The water life lineof Delhi, the river accounts for 70% of the city's watersupplies. What a shame Yamuna is badly polluted eventhough $500 million has been spent on cleaning up theriver. In Hinduism the river is a spiritual life line and theholy Yamuna (worshipped as a goddess) offers afascinating view on the riverbanks (ghats)

8)St. James Church (1836): Named afterJames Skinner, a historic figure in Delhi's colonialpast. Once a mercenary he kept his promise tobuild a church if he would survive his injuries from abattlefield. The area of St. James Church was theadministrative centre during the early East India

Company days in Delhi (around 1800)

    10) Karim's Restaurant: Open since1913, the place is a true Delhi institution. The familyhistory goes back to the royal kitchens of theMughal emperors. The founder, Haji Karimuddin, wanted to serve 'royal food to the common man'.And he succeeded!

It was on this ghat Lord Brahma is said to have bathedand recovered his lost memory. Thus the name

(Nigambodh Ghat means realization of knowledge). The boat ride which is part of this tour gives aninteresting sight of the rites of Hindu cremation

9)Jama Masjid (1656): Largest mosque of

India, the courtyard has a capacity of 20.000 people.Literally it means Friday Mosque as it was the Fridaypraying place for Shah Jahan and his court who wouldmove in an impressive procession with elephants fromthe Red Fort.
