HORNED FROGS TO WATCH

Kerley is considered one of the most explosive players in the nation. In 2009, Kerley was named Mountain West Conference Special Teams Player of the Year and a Pro Football Weekly All American. The senior returned two punts for touchdowns, including a 69 yarder against SMU. Kerley also led TCU in receptions and set a single season TCU record for most punt return yards, surpassing Davy O’Brien’s previous mark.

85JEREMY KERLEY

WR • Hutto, TXDaniels was named All Mountain West Conference second team defensive end in his fi rst season as a starter last year. He recorded his fi rst career sack against SMU in 2009 and fi nished second on the team in that category. This season, Daniels looks better than ever and has already tallied 3.5 sacks and 6 tackles for a loss which leads the team.

96 WAYNEDANIELS

DE • Kilgore, TXThe three-year starter is arguably one of the best quarterbacks in Horned Frog history. In 2009, Dalton was named Mountain West Conference Player of the year, as he led TCU to a 12-1 record and a Tostitos Fiesta Bowl appearance. Dalton was also one of 10 fi nalists for the Manning Award and a Sports Illustrated All American. Dalton has surpassed Sammy Baugh for most victories by a starting quarterback in TCU history.

Forty miles of bad blood culminating in a single night: the Battle for the Iron Skillet is upon us.

Less than a mere 48 hours away, the emotional apex of the football season will be in a (hopefully) mass conglomerate of red,

rowdy, proud and loud fans dying for Kyle Padron to toss another touchdown and to remove the head of Andy Dalton.

This game is its own entity. There is conference play, out of conference play and TCU. Sure, beating Houston and winning the Conference-USA and earning us a trip to another pre-New’s Year day bowl would be wonderful, but what will be remembered most? Birmingham Bowl Champions or defeater of the No. 4 in the nation, most hated rivals, horned frogs? Is it even a question? This is the biggest game of the year, with no exceptions.

Though, before we get overexcited (too late, right?), TCU is good. Ranked number four for a reason, quarterback Andy Dalton has thrown what feels like only two incomplete passes all season while their defense has yielded the fourth fewest yards in all of D1 college football. With

all that added up, SMU is being treated like a baby. TCU is 17.5-point favorites as an away team and the ESPN.com preview misspells our quarterback’s name twice, a quarterback who had a hand in five touchdowns against a PAC 10 team last week ago, but nevertheless…

Now that the football side of this is out of my system, the atmosphere can win this game. What did we all do as ten year olds in our driveways playing basketball by ourselves?

“Four seconds left to shoot, (your last name here) moves left, three-two, steps back, one, he shoots… GOOOODD!! And the crowd goes wild!!” We all yearn for the screaming fans let’s give that to our team. Heck, even in video games there is a momentum bar that helps the home team win.

SMU has a chance in this game. So while it may not be David vs. Goliath, it’s at least David vs. Goliath’s son. We can be the X factor, fellow Mustangs, the stones in David’s pouch.

We all know the story. We all know the stakes. So Fill the Ford, Red Out, Pony Up, and Beat TCU.

Fried frog legs served a la carteOn Friday, the SMU Mustangs will play the TCU Horned

Frogs in a matchup unlike any other. The Battle for

the Iron Skillet is a tradition that students look forward to every year, as is the friendly rivalry between the

Frogs and the Mustangs. Most students are of the opinion that

SMU cannot win on Friday. Well, they are wrong.

The Mustangs have played the Frogs every season but six since 1915, no matter what conference of which the two teams were a member.

Of the 87 games that SMU has played against TCU, seven games were tied, SMU won 39, and TCU leads with a mere 41 wins.

TCU may have won the most games thus far, but the Mustangs have the longest winning streak to date. SMU proudly kept the Iron Skillet from 1972-1986 as the result of a 15 game winning streak.

The Frogs have only managed to win seven games in a row; a streak that was wiped clean by an SMU victory in 2005. That season, by the way, was a season where TCU was undefeated, that is, until

they played the Mustangs.Mustangs have a history of stopping the

Frogs in their tracks. The rumor of how The Battle for the Iron Skillet got its name is a prime example.

Before a game between SMU and TCU, a Mustang was frying up Frog legs. A TCU fan scolded the Mustang for the display and said the two should let the football game decide who goes home with the frog legs and the skillet.

I have no doubt that the Mustangs got to keep the Frog legs and the skillet that day.

With the leadership of June Jones our football team has risen to a competitive level that is more than capable of dealing with the TCU Frogs on Friday. Their team has lost some key players and ours has gained more than a few.

With the support of the student body and a full stadium on Friday, I do not see how the Mustangs can lose. So, this Family Weekend, bring your brothers and sisters, bring your moms and bring your dads, because SMU is going to be dominating all the Horned Frogs out there. Who knows, this Battle of the Iron Skillet could spark another winning streak for the Mustangs.

[email protected] rivalry between blue and red versus pur-ple and white continues with this weekend’s Battle for the Iron Skillet. However, many

people don’t even know why this battle is over a key instrument in frying chicken.

Battling almost every year since 1915, SMU and TCU will come together again to see who takes home the iron skillet trophy.

There is the rumor of the origin of the

name “iron skillet” stemming from a 1950s tradition. Allegedly, an SMU fan was frying up frog legs as a joke before a game. When a TCU fan witnessed the catastrophe, he insisted that the mustang fan had gone too far beyond the rivalry.

It was then, allegedly, decided that the winner of that year’s game would take home the skillet with the frog legs.

As reported by smumustangs.com, a 1946 article in the Dallas Morning News reported

that the Battle of the Iron Skillet began to prevent “mutilation of school property” by fans, following a year when both campuses caused $1,000 in damages.

The skillet was supposed to serve a symbol of the rivalry, as proposed by the student council.

Whether there really was a mustang fan frying up TCU’s mascot for dinner or not, fans

are eager to go to the battle. .This year’s seniors may be even more

anxious for a win, as TCU has won the game for the last three years. SMU won in 2005, after five years of defeat by the horn frogs.

Gerald J. Ford Stadium is hosting the non-conference game this Friday at 7 p.m. This marks the 75th anniversary, and will air on ESPN.
