Dear Friends of Literacy,

Last year, we reported losing a federal grant – after 15 years, the focus changed from English language acquisition and civics education to workforce development. The 10% loss in revenue affected the Literacy Council in many ways. One very positive outcome is that we have developed Job Readiness curricula in both the Adult Literacy (AL) and English as a Second Language (ESL) programs. Also, we are partnering more effectively with other local agencies that provide training and placement for employment, as you will see in the following pages.

We are also working hard to diversify our sources of revenue. We hold events, like our upcoming Literacy Luncheon, to raise awareness and funds for the Literacy Council. We are researching different grant-making organizations, and meeting with local businesses and individuals to help us fill the gap. For the longer term, we’re building efforts for Planned Giving and continuing to cultivate relationships with businesses and foundations. We remain ever-grateful to those who invest in the good work that we do.

Most importantly, we remain true to our mission. Cape Fear Literacy Council is focused on our students. All adult learners are treated with respect and kindness; our program staff and incredible volunteers work hard to help each student meet his or her educational goals. Our overall instructional opportunities evolve with the needs of our community, and our commitment to each individual learner endures.

Thank you for supporting us!

CONGRATULATIONS!

The Adult Literacy (AL) program offers free and confidential evaluation and tutoring for students who need to improve their reading, writing, math, computer, and/or test-taking skills.

EDUCATION UPDATES

So far this year . . . 165 students have studied more than 5,380 hours 130 tutors have donated more than 8,240 hours We have had 129 one-on-one pairs and 15 small classes 79% of students who have completed post-testing have

shown measurable progress

JOBS PROGRAM UPDATE

14 students have participated in Learn to Earn classes

13 volunteers have taught or mentored for Learn to Earn

19 AL students have reported getting a new job

CFLC works with local adults so that they can become positive contributors to our community. We have always helped adults improve their employability skills, but this year we have formalized our job-readiness efforts with the addition of “Learn to Earn” classes and individual Job Mentors. One added benefit of this program has been increased communication and referrals with various community partner agencies, such as Cape Fear Community College, NC Workforce Centers, EDSI, and Phoenix Hometown Hires. Together we have created a network that gives our students and clients access to all of the resources they need to succeed.

Jessie, an 18 year old living on her own, was referred to CFLC by a concerned teacher at Mosely High School. Jessie told staff she wanted to be a nurse someday and work with elderly patients, but she was afraid that she wasn’t going to graduate, and she desperately needed a job to support herself.

At CFLC, she worked diligently with her one-on-one tutor to gain the skills and focus she needed to graduate high school. By working with our volunteer job coach, she was also able to get a restaurant job. Jessie told staff, "I got my first job ever. It feels amazing to be earning my own money! My tutor helped me open a checking account and I feel like a real grown-up."

Her tutor proudly attended her graduation ceremony and said, “Jessie is an amazing young woman. Thank you for allowing me to be her teacher. Watching her graduate from high school was a mountain top experience. I don’t know if I’ll ever have a chance to do anything again that will have that kind of impact on someone’s life.”

Once Jessie earned her diploma, CFLC was able to refer her to EDSI, a for-profit company that contracts with NC Workforce Centers to help clients find employment solutions. The program was able to leverage employer partnerships to place her in a paid internship at Elderhaus, gaining valuable work experience in her chosen field. Her tutor also helped her apply to CFCC, where she enrolled in the CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) program. Thanks to the “village” of support she found in Wilmington’s community organizations, Jessie’s future looks very bright.

A big thanks to the Wilmington Brewing Company and Lighthouse Beer and Wine in Wrightsville Beach. These two awesome local companies teamed up to support the Cape Fear Literacy Council with their "Cycle for a Cause” benefit in May, donating a portion of sales from this fun event to CFLC!

Watch for our series of “Insights” in the Greater Wilmington Business Journal written by members of the Cape Fear Literacy Council staff and board. We will be publishing an “Insights” column twice per month for six months, starting in June. (WilmingtonBiz.com)

CFLC would like to extend our thanks to the Bargain Box of Wilmington for hosting the fabulous "Dress to Impress" event for our Learn to Earn students. Participants received hair, make-up, and clothing advice for interview success. The Bargain Box also generously donated vouchers to be used towards an interview outfit. It was a wonderful experience for everyone who participated! VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT:

GWYNN CHAMBERS

Gwynn really does everything for the Literacy Council. On the instructional side, she tutors one-on-one in the Adult Literacy program, teaches English in the ESL program, and serves as a Job Mentor for individuals who need help researching and applying for jobs. In addition, Gwynn serves as our afternoon receptionist two days per week, during which time she helps to maintain our lending library.

Gwynn also represents the Literacy Council at awareness-raising events, and volunteers to support our fundraisers. As a member of our Gala committee, she has taken leadership of our silent auction.

The staff members of Cape Fear Literacy Council are deeply grateful for Gwynn. She is not only dedicated to helping with every aspect of our organization, but she’s truly a member of our CFLC family.

At their 14th Annual Golf Tournament (held at Pine Valley Country Club in May), the Wilmington East Rotary Club raised $3,500 for the Cape Fear Literacy Council. CFLC, along with The First Tee of Greater Wilmington and The Children’s Museum of Wilmington, were grateful recipients of proceeds from the tournament. THANK YOU to the East Rotary Club!

We are so grateful to Wilmington Cape Fear Rotary for their generous donation to Cape Fear Literacy Council. Each year, Cape Fear Rotary selects nonprofits to be the recipients of proceeds from their annual golf tournament. This year's Kusek Financial Group Golf Tournament was held at Cape Fear National in May.

Delia Stanley and her husband, Michael Arrigo, Jr., visited CFLC to deliver many wonderful donations from the generous patrons of Wilmington Tasting Room. We are grateful to Delia, owner Michael Bevacqua, and all of the customers who donated to our “Wish List” Drive during the Tasting Room's Open Mic Nite in February. Please support Wilmington Tasting Room and the charitable work they do for our community.

In January, Carla and Paul from The Alternative Dispute Resolution Center (ADR) donated 5 laptops to CFLC to help our adult learners improve their computer skills.

ADR is a local non-profit that provides mediation services and training in communication skills. (See www.theADRcenter.org.)

Thank you Carla, Paul, and ADR for supporting our adult learners!

Thank you to everyone who supported, sponsored and attended our 2016 “12 Tastes of Christmas” benefit. The event raised over $11,000 for CFLC! We couldn't have done it without all of our amazing sponsors, restaurants, bars, and guests! Congratulations to organizers Nina Bays Cournoyer and Katherine Clark for hosting another successful (and TASTE-ful) event!

Whole Foods Market on Oleander hosted CFLC staff, supporters, and volunteers in January at their “Wine Not, It’s Friday” benefit event. Guests sampled wonderful wine and food pairings throughout the store and proceeds from the event went to the Literacy Council. Thanks, Whole Foods Market!

BIG CONGRATS to Jodie Rippy and Chris Patterson - the winners of our "Last Ticket Standing" 50/50 Raffle. These two ladies shared the winning ticket at the exciting elimination drawing at Bill's Front Porch with emcee-extraordinaire, Alan Perry. Thank you to everyone who purchased raffle tickets! And thanks to the Musser family for another great event.

Congratulations to our

“Last Ticket Standing” Winners,

Jodie Rippy and Chris Patterson!

CFLC welcomes two new staff members to lead the ESL program: Melanie Nelson, ESL Program Director, and Lauren Rogers, ESL Program Assistant. In addition to maintaining existing classes and tutoring, they are working to expand the ESL program’s offerings to support the goals and interests of our students. The program currently has about 50 more students than at this time last year.

CITIZENSHIP: Many of our students are interested in becoming citizens of the United States, so the citizenship program has been rebooted. We have a new Sunday afternoon program for ESL students who want to learn more about becoming a citizen, study the vocabulary and civics material for the citizenship test, or get help with their applications. Volunteers are available to help with the application for citizenship as well as applications for fee waivers and fee reductions; the cost of applying for citizenship is $725. Tutors are also on hand to conduct practice interviews for naturalization. Since the start of 2017, four of our students have become naturalized citizens of the United States.

-Carol Milam, ESL and Civics instructor

RESOURCES FOR PROFESSIONALS: Quite a few of our students are professionals who are interested in learning more about business practices in the U.S. They are also interested in networking, both with established professionals from the community and with other ESL speakers. Accordingly, a new program has been added to the Sunday afternoon lineup. Professionals who are ESL speakers come to CFLC for cake, coffee, and conversation; it is a great opportunity for them to build a community of like-minded people. No other organizations in the Wilmington area offer this type of support to professionals who speak more than one language.

We continue to offer English language/grammar classes at the emergent literacy, beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels, as well as special interest classes, such as conversation and vocabulary building. Our classes meet twice a week for 8-week sessions. We also continue to tutor individual students who wish to attain their TOEFL certifications or their GEDs, and we even tutor via Skype for students who travel for work.

-Helen Welsh, ESL tutor

Supported by our creative and caring tutors, our program continues to diversify to meet the evolving desires of our growing population of students.

So far in 2017, Bank of America Foundation, the Corning Foundation, PPD, and the Dollar General Literacy Foundation have awarded CFLC grants in support of both our Adult Literacy and ESL programs.

Additionally, International Paper specifically supports our ESL program. We are also proud to be a United Way agency, in addition to being funded by the City of Wilmington and New Hanover County. Investments in our mission from all of these sources allow us to continue teaching adults the skills they need to be more engaged in our community.

CFLC gratefully acknowledges the ProLiteracy National Book Fund Award, which generated $2,245 in textbooks to prepare students for the GED and job-readiness. These valuable resources have helped more than 50 students work towards their academic and employment goals this year.

We are thankful for the incredible generosity of the Landfall Foundation for allocating capital grant funds so that we may replace the HVAC system in the older building on the Cape Fear Literacy Council campus.

It is an outdated system, many years beyond its life expectancy, that has limped along for years. Just as the Council received news about major federal funding cuts that would significantly impact our budget, the unit failed.

The Landfall Foundation saved the day when they presented this check in our Reader’s Theater class. Our students can now learn in a comfortable and conducive environment.

The Catherine Kennedy Home Foundation provides funding to local nonprofits that enhance the lives of older adults in southeastern North Carolina.

Cape Fear Literacy Council provides skill books for CFLC’s learners who are 60+ years old with our $2,000 grant award.

CFLC Executive Director, Yasmin Tomkinson (pictured here with Catherine Kennedy Home Foundation Board Members), shares stories of how the funds impact the lives of our constituents.
