• Story Sums
Learning Objectives:
Remember- The learners will be able to learn the vocabulary related to subtraction problems
Understand- The learners will be able to identify subtraction problems.
Apply- The learners will be able to solve daily life problems related to subtraction and to correlate between
addition and subtraction.
Analyze/ Evaluate- The learners will be able to assess my performance through google form and
activities.
Create- The learners will be able to solve and frame statements of word problems based on their
understanding.
Checking Subtraction with Addition (For example, subtract 23 from 53)
Step 1: To find the difference, subtract the smaller number from a bigger number.
T O
3 0
Step 2: To check the answer, add the difference to the smaller number.
T O
Subtraction Strategies for Mental Calculation
Strategy 1 – Counting Back – Put the bigger number in your mind and count backward.
Strategy 2 – Subtract a number from a 2-digit number using the “subtract 10 and then add the extra ones”
strategy.(For Example - Find 62 –8……..Subtracting 8 is the same as subtracting 10 and adding 2).
Strategy 3 – Subtracting tens mentally using the “subtract the tens” strategy (For example – 39 – 20).
Strategy 4 – Friends of ten (For example – 10-1 = 9 & 10-9 = 1
10-2 = 8 & 10-8 = 2)
Subtract Facts.
Subtraction Facts
35 -23 = 12
50 -30 = 20
Day 1 ( H.A.) – Exercise – 3.3 & Page no – 54 in Textbook
Day 2 (C.A.) - Story Sums
Story Problems or Word Problems – These are called language-based problems. When you
encounter a problem or real-life scenario, you have to decide the mathematical operations (like
addition, subtraction, multiplication or division) to be used while solving a problem.
Vocabulary involved in Subtraction
Story Problems: Steps to solve Subtraction Story Problems
Step 1 – Read the problem carefully and try to understand the problem.
Step 2 – Find Keywords and important facts (or numbers). For example – In subtraction
word problems, try to find difference, less, more, left, etc. These Key words will help
you to decide whether you have to add or subtract.
Step 3 – Next step is to write statement or an equation. For example – 10 – 3 =? or
49 - 17 =?
Step 4 – Last step is to solve it and find out an answer.

Day 2 (C.A.) – Exercise – 3.4 in Textbook
Day 2 (H.A.) – Do the following word problems in Maths Notebook & Page no- 57 in Maths
Textbook.
