By the end, if my children were not asleep, they certainly were not far off and to be honest, even I struggled to shake myself awake after reading it to them. The power of a yawn in relaxing the body and getting it ready for sleep is truly amazing. In the same way, I believe the power of Mansfield SHS as a whole to educate and care for our young people, is just as wonderful, and if the minds of students and parents are open, the feeling of being a part of something great is just as strong. We are one of the largest schools in Queensland, but that does not mean we are an Orwellian education factory churning out mass-produced minds from sterile and emotionless classrooms. On the contrary, the feeling of care, of belonging and being ‘seen’ permeates our school, it is an irresistible force which, rather than putting us to sleep, wakes us up, energises us and inspires us to make the most of every lesson, every day. This is one of our greatest strengths as a schooling community and is plain to see in the brilliant beginning to this school year. From the amazing pride and precision with which our students are wearing their uniform, to the positive attitude they have shown toward each other and themselves, the behaviour of Mansfield SHS students in the year to date has been exemplary and I am so proud of them, as we all should be. Here, making the most of 2020 happens every day, from the moment those teal uniforms are pulled on until the end of the evening, when the books are closed and the computers are turned off. The opportunities for your children to excel abound in every single moment at Mansfield SHS. And when I say ‘excel’ I mean within their strengths, capabilities and effort. A student who excels in chess may find Shakespeare challenging, whilst one who could run around the oval twenty times without giving a thought to tired muscles, might become exhausted learning the periodic table. It is not in the subject or level that a student might reach which indicates excellence, but the willingness and action they take to give their absolute best, that truly signifies they have excelled. In this, your children are supported by outstanding staff who facilitate quality learning and teaching every day. Amazing, innovative educational experiences are happening in each classroom in every lesson at Mansfield: absolutely no yawns happen here! I also believe that making the most of 2020 is about becoming involved in our school culture and taking advantage of the opportunities Mansfield SHS offers students. We are a caring, nurturing schooling community: we celebrate our successes, help those whom are experiencing challenges and most importantly, we do this as a team from one end of the school to the other. If you combine this with the incredible opportunities our students are offered, both inside our scheduled subjects, excellence programs and extracurricular activities, finding a place of joy and challenge for every student is achievable. I would strongly encourage each of our parents and students to explore the wide range of activities on offer both during and after school hours. In this regard, our size has allowed for an incredible amount of diversity in our subjects and extra-curricular offerings.

We try to regularly arrange workshop with professionals in thearts community to enrich our students’ experiences in drama. In week 4 our Year 10 drama classes combined and exploredcollage drama in a workshop with Grin and Tonic TheatreCompany. Students enjoyed engaging in a range of practicalplay building activities that provided them opportunities toexplore conventions of collage drama through collaboration.Students felt their understanding of collage drama wasdeepened and their performance skills were built on andthoroughly enjoyed themselves.

In week 3, Year 9 drama students were able to explore thewonderful world of improvisation. Last week in SDP the topic was ‘building self-control’. Studentscontinued to expand and dig deeper into their ‘positiveemotions’. Building self-control will assist students across theirsenior schooling journey both in the classroom, the playgroundand within the wider community.

Gratitude Week

Last week was Gratitude Week at Mansfield SHS and as thesenior schooling team visited classes, we saw this weekcelebrated in a variety of ways and through different activities.

Ms Croll and Ms Symko’s Year 11 health students participatedin 14 different activities related to the Positive EducationCharacter Strengths and linking this into gratitude.

Two of these activities included practising mindfulness andanother was expressing gratitude through writing a letterthanking one of their teachers who has helped them.

Senior schooling year coordinators (Ms Soteriou, Ms Wust andMs Croll) are working with our senior students to create agratitude chain. Students have the chance to write on a pieceof paper something they are grateful for and this will be linkedtogether creating a long chain on gratefulness.

This will be displayed in the resource centre, so make sure tocheck it out.

TAFE and certificate courses

If your student is absent from his/her certificate course, pleasecontact the relevant TAFE or RTO advising of your student’sabsenteeism on the day, as you would here at school. Allstudents who attend TAFE will be noted on the TAFE portal, which the school has access to.

If there are any students who have taken up a placement in acourse then decide that it is not their preferred pathway, thesestudents must see Ms Symko or Ms Pearce in G block priorto withdrawing, as this may impact on their ability to receive aQueensland Certificate of Education (QCE) at the end of Year12.

If your student missed a place in a certificate course startingat the beginning of this year, TAFE will offer additional coursesmid-year later this term. The 2021 certificate applicationprocess will begin early semester two and the school will advisestudents of these courses as soon as these courses arefinalised by TAFE.

Thank you to parents/caregivers for supporting your studentin this exciting and new opportunity upon which they areembarking.
