Volume 14, Issue 14 Friday, September 13, 2019 Dear School Family,
Our annual Thanksgiving
Assembly was a wonderful
celebration and a great
opportunity to be thankful for
God’s incredible provision.
Our Prefects were able to thank the various
levels of Government, Associations, professional
services, groups and individuals who have
significantly contributed to the life of Temple. It
was a special time to honour Mr Brian Hagger
who retired as Headmaster of Temple in 2006.
He was recognised in the Australia Day honours
this year and also celebrated his 80th Birthday.
We also honoured and gave thanks for Mr Bruce
Robson our foundation Headmaster who passed
away in 2007. We thanked his family who were
represented by 2 of his children Mr Tim Robson
and Mrs Rebecca Fortunatow and his youngest
grandchild Eliza Fortunatow who is completing
Year 12. Being thankful is an important part of
our life in Christ. We are not necessarily thankful
for the situations we are in or circumstances that
are occurring around us. Life can be very difficult
and at times even tragic. In the midst of these
situations we can still be thankful for God’s never
ending love and grace in our lives. We can be
thankful that God is good all the time and that we
can trust Him. We are not thankful for all
situations but we can be thankful in all situations.
Our team for Cambodia will be leaving on
Monday,16 September, and will be away for 2
weeks. This year we have 21 students and 5
staff members. This year the team will be led by
Mr Brad Adams and the other staff members are
Mrs Tracy Montesi, Mrs Shannalee Mulder, Mr
Todd Purdy and Mr Mark Ryan. It was great to
be able to have the
team prayed for at
our Thanksgiving
Assembly. Please
pray for the team
over the next 2
weeks.
We have announced
the Prefect team for
2020 and also our
Music and Sports
Captains. It is really
encouraging to see
so many students
growing their leadership qualities. These Year 11
students will work with the current Prefects and
Captains for the remainder of the year and lead
the students when the Year 12 students finish at
the end of Week 2 in Term 4.
It has been a very exciting and busy fortnight in
the life of Temple. Our Science and Engineering
team competed in the State Super Challenge.
They worked exceptionally well as a team and
achieved an overall 2nd place.

Well done to all of our students and staff, Mr Kevin Marzahn, Mrs Louise Durrant and Mr Andrew Langmaid who were involved this year.
I really enjoyed connecting with families at our Year 7 and 8 Breakfast recently. It is always nice to be able to start the day with a hot breakfast
and a nice cup of coffee. Thank you to all the families that attended the morning and it was great to be able chat with many parents. I was
greatly encouraged by the conversations and parents really appreciated the opportunity to meet their child’s friends and their parents.
The term is drawing quickly to a close. Planning is well underway for next year as we have now received all the subject selections from
students who will be in Years 9 to 12 in 2020. Our current Year 12 students only have 2 weeks in Term 4 before they go on study leave
followed by their final externally set examinations. Please continue to pray for our Year 12 students as they complete their final assessment
tasks and prepare for their examinations. They have been a wonderful blessing throughout this year and great encouragers to the other
students. Marcel Rijken

2019 Staff Vs Student Netball Game
Congratulations to the teachers for winning back the crown. Staff Vs Student
Netball game winners for 2019! Staff versed the Year 12 Students in the
annual, and very competitive game. Beautiful weather conditions allowed for a
great game. With a strong staff team and a determined student team the
afternoon game was an enjoyable one to play in and watch. Final scores were
33 to 13. Well done to everyone who participated.
Year 7/8 Breakfast
On Thursday of Week 7, Year 7 and 8 students and their families arrived at
school for a 7:30 am breakfast. The Parents and Friends team and Mrs
Enright, our canteen manager, arrived even earlier than that to prepare a
delicious breakfast that offered something for everyone; fresh fruit,
croissants, pancakes, quiche, juice, and of course the coffee machine was
in operation and the baristas kept very busy throughout the breakfast. It
was a great opportunity for parents, teachers and students to mingle in a
more relaxed environment, while enjoying great breakfast food at the same
time.
Thank you to the families and teachers that came, the Parents and Friends
Group and Mrs Enright for preparing the food. We were very thankful for
having Lucy and Jackson Winkley around in the morning to help set up,
and for having some enthusiastic students who came into school early to
make coffee for the breakfast; Toby Wenzel, Zak Collingwood, Zac Boyd
and Jonathan Bleby.
It was an enjoyable time of community and a great way to start the day!

INSIDE OUT’S 2019 WINTER
VOLUME OF POETRY: LIFE, LOVE,
LAUGHTER
We are now celebrating our second year as a poetry group at
Temple Christian College. Please take the opportunity to read
the copy of Life. Love. Laughter in the SLH. During the first
semester, we focused on poetry that expressed something of
love and of the situations that bring much-needed humour into
our lives.
We experimented with free verse, cinquains, limericks and
humorous narrative verses following a formula. It was all good
fun. We have only been a handful because of so many
competing activities and rehearsals, but we have still managed
to produce the second Winter Volume of our Inside Out
anthologies, giving an overview of the poetry we have been
exploring. Along the way, we have been able to enjoy the
works of other poets and appreciate the way they have been
crafted to provide us with so much reading pleasure and
become a catalyst for our poetic experimentation.
We would be delighted to welcome any new students into our
midst for the remainder of the year. You would have the
opportunity of making your writing more powerful as you try
new forms of poetry and learn to express your own thoughts
and feelings in a way that evokes a response from others. If
you are already a poet, be assured you would have an
attentive and appreciative audience for your talent and the
opportunity to develop your skills further. Please come and
join us every second Wednesday (on the even weeks of the
term) in WF6.

Year 9 Geography Excursion – Adelaide Oval
Throughout Term 3, Year 9 Geography students have been studying a unit
on the Geographies of Interconnections. This unit explores the
interconnections people create through places and spaces, technology and
transport. From analysing the impact of social media and electromagnetic
frequencies (WiFi and mobile phones) to the massive changes in transport
that have occurred over the last century, students have enjoyed developing
an understanding of the complex networks humans create across time and
space.
As part of their studies, Yr. 9 Geography students embarked on an
excursion to the city and in addition to investigating the Riverbank Precinct,
had a tour of Adelaide Oval. It was a fantastic way to gain an insight into the
connections made by this arena through sport and events that
accommodate and entertain interstate and overseas guests and spectators.
Students enjoyed walking through the football and cricket rooms, the
journalists area, the heritage scoreboard, and even got to experience the
feeling of walking out to the ground complete with a sound system
replicating crowd cheers!
Geography is a fantastic subject that explores the way that we interact with
the world around us. Excursions such as this make learning memorable and
are a great way to gain a greater understanding of God’s world in which we
live.

2019 Science & Engineering Super Challenge Competition
The Super Challenge competition was held on Thursday 29th of
August. This state Super Challenge final was held at Titanium Security
Stadium, Findon. The student group knew what the activities for the
day would be, but each of the four person teams were randomly
allocated to the full day and half-day activities. Following an official
welcome, the individual colour teams were selected for the respective
tasks.
Each of the colour teams once again worked exceptionally well
throughout the day to achieve an outstanding overall result.
The final scores were:
Cummins Area School 1400
Temple Christian College 1205
Urrbrae Agricultural High School 1154
Claire High School 891
Blackwood High School 861
Glossop High School 784
Pedare Christian College 807
Tenison Woods College 760
The individual challenges for the day were:
The Bridge Flatpack Confounding Communications Stringways Grasping at Straws Future Power Return to Mars
Helter Skelter Shelter
For the morning half-day activities, the teams for Temple came first for
Stringways, Return to Mars and Helter Skelter Shelter. Second place
for Grasping at Straws and third for Future Power. For the afternoon
activities, Temple came first for the Confounding Communications and
second for the Stringways activities. As for the whole day activities,
the Bridge team and the Flat-Pack teams came fourth.
Gaining second place in South Australia in such a prestigious national
competition is an outstanding achievement. The Temple team has
now managed to secure a place in the Super Challenge in three
consecutive years. Mrs Durant, Mr. Langmaid and I were impressed in
the manner in which all team members conducted themselves: Their
focus and commitment to each challenge task was admirable.
Many thanks to all of the parents who encouraged their children to do
well in the competition.
Thanks must also go to the University of Newcastle, The Rotary Club
of Adelaide and to Ruth Conry, the South Australian local organiser of
the Challenge.
Kevin Marzahn, Science Coordinator.
