We hope that you have had a wonderful summer and are now ready to engage in a year filled with strong academic pursuits, as well as artistic, athletic, cultural, and personal opportunities for growth. School will open for all classes on Thursday, September 8. Students should report directly to their homerooms before 7:45. Lunch will be served, and dismissal will be at 2:15. Homeroom assignments are printed on this mailing label and, for returning students, are now posted on SIS. The Open House for Class VI and Class V is now scheduled on Thursday, September 22 from 6:00-8:00 pm and for Class IV-I, on Thursday, September 29, also from 6:00-8:00 pm. On both evenings, representatives of our parent groups will be in the dining hall from 5:30-6:00 to discuss ways in which you may become involved in the school community. Please bring your child's homeroom number. Because there will not be any parking in the school lots, we recommend that you please use the MBTA or carpool. Dear Boston Latin School Family:

Once again, we welcome you to the 2016-2017 school year!

Our Open House evenings provide an excellent opportunity to learn about the academic program your child will be studying this year.

We recognize that parents are an important resource and key to a child's success. Every student will receive one agenda book that includes the school-based rules and school-wide expectations. Please take time to read this information and to visit www.bls.org for additional notices throughout the school year.

BLS head masters and Superintendent Chang will meet with parents at the first School Parent Council (SPC) meeting of the new school year on Tuesday, September 13, at 7:00 pm, to discuss the work ahead for the BLS community and to answer questions. That meeting will be preceded by the School Site Council (SSC) meeting at 6:00 pm and the agenda for that meeting will include explanation of the upcoming SSC election to be held in October, as well as an overview of the role of the SSC in the head master hiring process.

Please also plan to attend the important joint SSC -SPC meeting on Thursday, October 6 at 7:00 pm in Keefe Library at which the elections of parent representatives and officers for both the SSC and SPC will take place. We encourage all parents to attend and help shape the agenda for the year.

We are looking forward to an exciting year here on Avenue Louis Pasteur! Please contact us with any concerns.

A Note from the School Nurses ~ August 2016 Dear BLS Families: Welcome to the new school year! We hope you had a restful summer. Below are a few brief FAQ-type topics that are important items for you to know so that we can better assist your young people at Latin School.

HEALTH ISSUES/UPDATES: Please notify us of all health issues and updates at the start of the school year and when they

occur during the year; send in supporting medical documentation and we in turn will notify your child’s teachers of any need-to-know issues.

Please notify us in advance of scheduled surgery or, in any case of extended absences due to illness, injury, or concussions so that we can in turn let the guidance counselors and teachers know; we can also help schedule a team re-entry meeting to create

a tailored academic make up plan with you and your child prior to returning to classes.

Temporary Elevator Passes ($20 deposit) are available from our office if medically necessary.

Students with SEIZURES, DIABETES, ANAPHYLAXIS and ASTHMA: Please send in all doctors’ orders, action plans, and supplies/medications on the first day of school. We require new/updated orders every school year. This is for your child’s

health and safety. (Epipen and Asthma Orders can be found on BLS.org/nurse)

FOOD ALLERGIES: Please send in food allergy documentation. If your child needs a special meal due to a food allergy, please

notify us so that we can send the district a special meal request for your child.

HEALTH OFFICE EMERGENCY CARDS: (The emergency sheet distributed on the first day of school) Fill this out and return it by Friday, Sept 9. Choose your emergency contacts carefully; they need to be available in case of illness, emergencies, or dismissal from school. Please call us to update/change as necessary.

IMMUNIZATIONS AND PHYSICAL EXAMS: Please send in a full list of your child’s immunizations along with their updated

physical exam report. Except in certain cases, immunizations are required of all students who attend school. Our goal is to ensure that all of our students are properly immunized!

TAKING MEDICATIONS IN SCHOOL: Please contact us if your child requires any prescription medicine during the school

day (ex. Concerta, Adderall, antibiotics, migraine, anti-anxiety meds, etc…). We can also give acetaminophen, benadryl, or ibuprofen if we have written notice from you. All medications are stored in a locked cabinet and administered under the nurses’ supervision.

All medication authorization forms can be downloaded at BLS.org/nurse. A doctor’s order and written parent permission is required for prescription medications, even if only taken occasionally.

Please help us to remind your students that they are responsible for picking up their unused medication at the end of the school year. Any remaining medication is discarded on the last day of school.

MEDICAL WAIVERS: See attendance waiver procedures in the Student Handbook

CONDOM ACCESS POLICY: In accordance with the District Wellness Policy (approved by the Boston School Committee in

2006) condoms are available to our 9-12 grade students. They can obtain them from the nurses after school after we review safe and responsible sex practices with them. Parents may opt their young people out of this program with written letter to the BLS headmaster at the start of the school year. To read more about the condom access policy, go to: https://bpshealthservices.org/policies/condom-accessibility/

SPORTS CLEARANCE PROCEDURE: Any student wishing to participate in a sport needs to provide an up-dated physical

exam report to the nurses; additionally, students who have been injured or have had major surgery or concussion since their physical exam will need additional medical notes clearing them for athletics

A written clearance for the sport will then be given to the student if there are no restrictions. Parents complete and sign this form before giving it to the coach, along with the other forms required by the Athletic Department.

Thank you for attention to these important health matters. Please call (or email) us with any questions or look for us at any of the Open

Houses. Here’s to a healthy school year! Sincerely, Ellen Moy-Maneikis, RN [email protected] Kimberly Brogan-Healy, RN [email protected] Amy Dietz, RN [email protected] Phone: 617-635-7881 Fax: 617-635-1581

WHY VOLUNTEER AT BLS?

To graduate from BLS, your student will need to complete 100 hours of community service

between grades 8-12. BLS and the BLS Parent Council ask that every parent volunteer 10

hours per year (one hour per month on average). Here are some motivations for making

this commitment:

It takes a village: As the saying goes, "It takes a village to raise a child,” and the same is true for

creating and maintaining a positive and nurturing school environment for an entire student body.

There are many activities at BLS that students and families benefit from which simply are not

possible to sustain without volunteers.

A little goes a long way: The big mistake here is thinking volunteering has to be an "all or

nothing,” thing. It doesn't. When it comes to helping out, a little can really go a long way.

Everyone has something to offer: There's a lot of behind-the-scenes work to be done that doesn't

require anything other than a true willingness to give your time and energy. Everyone is good at

something which means everyone has something to offer. What are you good at? How can you

apply your skills and passions to your child's school community? The trick is to find your niche and

apply it to volunteer work accordingly.

Your child will benefit: BLS is a public school with limited resources. Without the help of

volunteers (and donors) the educational experience BLS can offer will be significantly reduced.

Helping to coordinate and manage educational programs and projects will give your child a more

meaningful school experience -- and that should be motivation enough for anyone.

You will meet people and get to know the parents of your student’s friends, teachers and

administrators. Your student will be at BLS for four to six years. In that time, they will make new

friends and you can as well.

You'll feel good: Not only will your volunteer efforts pay off by enhancing your student's

experience on campus, you'll feel pretty good about yourself too. Doing for others feels right, and

it's contagious.

So do BLS – and yourself - a favor: become a volunteer in whatever capacity you are able. On the

following pages are a sample of the opportunities available and contacts for participating.

The Visual and Performing Arts at BLS

BLS enjoys a strong, diverse and vibrant Arts Program. There are ample opportunities for participation in music, theatre and visual arts both during the school day and after school. Student artists learn important technical and social skills that can greatly enhance their experience at BLS, and may lead to a lifelong passion and love of the arts. During the school day, students may play an instrument in band or orchestra, sing in one of the many choruses, take visual art courses, and participate in theatre. After school, there are many extracurricular opportunities as well. Student artists learn the value of community, leadership, artistic expression, commitment and risk-taking. The dedicated Arts Faculty works with their students in a respectful and nurturing environment, fostering their artistry both in and out of school.

Overview In-School Arts Opportunities: Members of Class VI take a General Music course, as well as a Visual Arts course as part of their required course load. Members of Class V who have not selected a performing arts option take a General Theatre course. Visual Arts are offered again to members of Classes I and II as an elective, as is Music Theory. Incoming members of Class VI and Class IV that have chosen either voice or an instrument are assigned to a chorus, band, or orchestra. Extra Curricular Opportunities: There are many opportunities to participate in the arts after school at BLS. Please note that many of the music and theater options are by audition and some are open to all. Here is an overview of the offerings: Music: The Football Band, Dues Band, Gospel Choir have open enrollment; participation in the Big Band, Chamber Choir, Show Choir, Woftones and Wolfettes is by audition. There are also opportunities for on site private lessons with Community Music Center of Boston and to sing with The Handle and Haydn Society. Theatre. Fall Play, One Acts, Theater Guild Production, and Spring Musical are auditioned, the Yellow Submarine (Improv) is open to all. Visual Arts: Photography, Drawing and Ceramics after school activities are open to all. Friends of the Arts is a parent group committed to supporting students and faculty in the Fine and Performing Arts. They hold meetings on the first Wednesday of each month at 6:30pm on Floor 1A of the Arts Wing. FOA members support the arts both financially, through membership dues, and as volunteers/chaperones at events both in and out of school. Please consider joining FOA at www.blsarts.org . Or for more information, please contact FOA Co-Chairs Alicia Jurus ([email protected]) or Cathy Bosch ([email protected]).

Athletics at BLS

Athletics play an important part in the lives of many BLS students. Student athletes learn about teamwork, responsibility, leadership, fitness, hard work, and commitment. BLS supports these and the many other benefits of athletic participation and has 50 Wolfpack teams competing in 18 different sports. Practices are usually every day after school for several hours, during the last weeks of summer for fall sports, and over vacations. Teams practice at facilities all over Boston and compete primarily against schools not in the city. Away games can be far and students sometimes get home well into the evening. Daily updates are available regarding schedules on BLS Website as well as Twitter at http://bls.org/ and https://twitter.com/bls_athletics 2016-2017 TEAMS: FALL WINTER SPRING Cross country (b/g)(v) Basketball (b/g) (v,jv,fr) Baseball (v/jv) Soccer (b/g) (v/jv/fr) Ice hockey (b/g) (v/jv) Softball (v/jv) Volleyball ( g) (v/jv/fr) Wrestling (coed) Volleyball (b) (v/jv) Swimming (g) Swimming (b) (v) Outdoor track (b/g) (v) Football (v,jv,fr) * Indoor track ( b/g) (v) Crew (b/g) (v/n) Golf (coed) (v) Fencing (coed) Sailing (coed) Cheerleading (v,jv) * Lacrosse (b/g) (v/jv)

Starting Dates 2016 Tryout schedules for fall, winter and spring sports are posted on the website and posted outside Mr. Owen’s office and both locker rooms. In addition, there is usually a pre-season sports meeting a number of weeks before the season, led by Athletic Director, where coaches share information with participants. FALL: Football 8/19. All others after 8/25. Freshman Soccer week of 9/12. Details to Follow WINTER: Monday after Thanksgiving. SPRING: Third Monday in March. Conclusion of a season is the last regular season game or the last MIAA-sponsored tournament.

Registering for a Sport When trying out for a sport at BLS, the following requirements must be completed prior to the first day of tryouts: 1. Sports Clearance Form – issued by the BLS School Nurses. This can be obtained from the nurses' office when

school is in session. For fall 2016 Sports, it can also be obtained between the hours of 9:00-12:00 on August 18, 19, 22-26. In order to get this form, a current physical, completed within 13 months of the start of the season, must be on file at the nurses' office. Note: The nurses will only issue this form to students. Also please note that if an injury/concussion has occurred after the date of the physical, an additional note clearing the student for play must also be submitted.

2. Concussion course. All players and parents must complete an on-line concussion course. The course can be found at: http://www.nfhslearn.com/electiveDetail.aspx?courseID=15000 or at www.cdc.gov/Concussion. This should be done before filling out the Family ID (see below).

3. Sports Registration. This must be done online by going to the BLS website's Athletics section, Sports Registration tab. Registration must be done each time a student is preparing to sign up for a sport. (You should complete the concussion course prior registering, as you will be asked to confirm participation while registering.)

Once you've completed all the steps above, bring the Sports Clearance Form to the first day of tryouts. Students who do not complete the above steps are not permitted to try out.

BLS Friends of Athletics

BLS Friends of Athletics is a parent group formed to support and enhance the athletic experience of students at BLS. The group works to promote opportunities for athletes and their teams and to provide wellness opportunities for students not currently involved in organized athletics at school. The group welcomes the involvement of parents at all grade levels. To get involved, contact us at [email protected]

GO WOLFPACK!

Page 11: August, 2016 Dear Boston Latin School Family: Once again, we

Welcome to a new school year at Boston Latin School!

The Boston Latin School Association (BLSA) Parents’ Committee hopes everyone had a relaxing summer and is looking forward to an exciting year. We are eager to introduce ourselves to the new families joining the BLS community and remind returning families of the ways we support our students.

Who we are:

The BLSA is a 501(c)3 organization, established in 1844, uniting parents, alumni, and friends to support the students and faculty at Boston Latin School.

What we do:

Our goal is to have 100% of families participate by making a gift at whatever level they can. Last year investments from parents, alumni and friends provided more than $5.5 million in funding to help the school in tangible ways, for example:

Broadened athletic support, by subsiding JV and freshmen teams, and establishing an endowed athletic director position;

Provided 56% of the Arts program budget– supporting our bands, singing groups, extracurricular activities; and

Funded 100% of Saturday Success School to help our students academically thrive at BLS.

Partnered with the city to expand the number of seats from 450 to 750 in the

Exam School Initiative (ESI) to provide more equitable access from

traditionally underrepresented schools.

The BLSA Parents’ Committee seeks to build a strong network of BLS families who support the school mission through philanthropy.

Why is this important?

As a public school, BLS receives only about $81 per student per year for all discretionary needs beyond instruction, facilities and transportation. Families like yours empower students and provide an outstanding educational experience through our philanthropic investments. The BLSA has raised over 60% of the $50 million goal for the Prima Perpetua Campaign, which will transform Latin School for your children and for the children of Boston for years to come. The campaign has six areas of focus, including a robust STEM curriculum, opportunities to develop global understanding, resources to advance wellness and athletic teams, enhancements to every department by building upon liberal arts traditions, programs to develop engaged citizens and leaders, and growth in annual giving for immediate needs. To learn more about the campaign, please visit www.primaperpetua.org.

How can I help?

Get involved! Update your contact information! Invest in BLS! You will receive a number of invitations to support BLS and join other families at BLSA events. We hope you will join us!

Please contact BLSA Director of Annual Giving Marybeth Oskowski at [email protected] for information on how you can make an impact on BLS today.
