April 9th brought out CABI gardeners to begin weeding and getting garden plots ready for cole crops and other early vegetables. Garden plots are still avail-able. Go to the CABI garden website at https://cabicommunitygarden.org to fill out a form if you would like a plot. You can also follow CABI garden maven Renee Kline’s blog on this website too.

Adult Refugee Tutoring at CABI Latter Day Saints (LDS) and Muslim refugees began meeting at CABI last fall as an expansion of the Social Action Committee’s outreach to our neighboring refugee community, spearheaded by the chair, Tom Rogers. The Somali-Bantu adults need help with reading, writing and speaking English. Most of these refu-gees have plots in the CABI Community Garden. The LDS Church stepped in to fill the need for tutoring. LDS volunteers were recruited by Marla Olsen, the Refugee Spe-cialist for the LDS Church in the Treasure Valley. Her program attempts to put English tutoring classes in locations that are convenient to the learners. CABI’s Social Hall and classrooms for childcare play and learning were a perfect fit since many of the Somalis live close to CABI. The tutors reported a rocky start. In the Social Hall, the Somali adults felt awkward and shy. In the kids’ classrooms, stu-dents “ran amok” without their parents or grandparents, and there was more emphasis on classroom management than on learning and teaching. With time, patience and LOVE, there was progress—engaged playtime and thoughtful conver-sations. Mothers began shaking hands and speaking short phrases with teachers when they dropped children off before their adult classes. One-on-one learning stations helped adults navigate paper forms, computer programs, and conversa-tions. A great boost came during a two-month visit from Learning Lab, an adult literacy project. Learning Lab staff mod-eled best practices for tutoring both adults and children so that the LDS tutors learned while doing, side by side with ex-perts. As the academic year is ending, two adult students have already passed their citizenship exams, and four more have appointments to take the exam. Relationships have formed that bridge language and culture. CABI is working with the LDS volunteers and the Somali-Bantu community toward the goal of continuing this learning and teaching collaboration for the 2017/18 academic year. CABI congregants interested in tutoring on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays from noon to 2:00 pm are needed. To work with adults, contact Cathy Hall: [email protected] or cell 208-866-5154. To work with children and babies, contact Stephanie Little: [email protected] or cell 208-888-9697. For general questions about CABI’s Social Action Committee, contact Tom Rogers: [email protected] or cell 208-949-7807.

CABI Board Notes from April

CABI’s budget continues to grow healthier as a result of slightly increased income and controlled expenses. Pledges continue to come in and reminder notices will be sent in the coming month. Revenue from Deli Days is projected to help decrease the projected budget deficit.

The Purim Pizmon weekend program was very popular and successfully involved the community. The event broke even financially.

Issues presented by the Synagogue Director and discussed by the Board included rental of the social hall for both CABI families and outside groups, suggesting required fees for post-event cleaning; seeking solutions for the goathead and weed problem adjacent to the community garden; and immediate maintenance of the dishwasher. Consideration of security issues and CABI responses continued.

The Annual Meeting of the Congregation was set as June 5th at 6pm. As required, letters will go out to all eligible to

vote, and will include proxy forms for those unable to attend.

Deli Days Baking Continues!

We have just a few more sessions left to

finish the Deli Days baking – last year we sold out of eve-ry crumb of homemade dessert, so we are increasing our quantities of everything. Come and help out – mimosas and great conversation are guaranteed at every session! May 4—Challah from 1-5pm. Debbie Holmes is leading this session. May 21st - Cheesecake - 1-5 pm. Telma Anijar Ander-sen is leading this session. We need spring form pans from the membership, 8 to 9 inches only. May 28, 29, 30 - Cheesecake - 1-5 pm. Telma Anijar Andersen is leading these sessions. June 4th - Hamantaschen - 1-5 pm, Telma can lead this session unless someone else would like to volunteer to lead. RSVPs and questions should be directed to Telma at [email protected]. *We have 13 individual boxes of Filo Dough left over from the Apple Strudel baking session. Anyone willing to make us some more Apple Strudel can come pick up the dough in the CABI refrigerator.

CABI Socialites Theater & Dinner Group

The Caged Bird I I remember learning to play the piano: The wonder with which my tiny fingers balanced on polished keys Reaching, reaching tiny feet to distant pedals The full cry of the lower register, the trills Of the highest notes. The delight of sliding my fingers into place, year after year Feeling the spots where my hands had worn a home here. The Warsaw of my childhood was full of music: Street-corner buskers, buttoned-up conductors, cantors and songbooks at the synagogue And My father’s favorite records Put on after dinner, the tune to our kitchen dance. The records would be the first to go. Too incriminating, my father would explain, as he lit a fire in the backyard (Their foreign artists, their Jewish composers) Together, we watched the music of my childhood bubble and burn and rise: Smoke into an unforgiving sky. First the records; then the music books; then the piano, itself, The buskers replaced by soldiers at each corner A drumbeat of boots on concrete. And then, finally, us. II There was no music at Sobibor. At least, not the kind I was used to No cascading chords of piano, no swells of self-important cello; None of that. Sobibor was a place of silence, of long, skinny silence, as bone-thin and desperate as Its captives. It took time for me to hear its music: The rhythm of our breath, our sighs A hopeful drumbeat in our footsteps A high C, whistled on the wind, rising with the smoke And sometimes, on a good day When the work didn’t seem as hard, the cold not so biting I could’ve sworn I heard piano. H ello CABI! This is Zane Harbison, CABIT’s Commu-nications Vice President for the year of 5777. I apol-ogize for being out of contact for so long, but in this length of time much has happened in the Teen

Group! As I don’t have enough space to recap everything, I’ll be brief and summarize the most important and recent events happening in CABIT. First off, the CABIT Membership attended NFTY-NW’s Spring Kallah this past weekend at Camp Kalsman in Arlington, Washington. Everyone who went had a blast participating in Regional Board elections, a space-themed dance party, and the bitter-sweet “Senior Goodbyes” circle on the last night. Overall, it was a great weekend!

Although he wasn’t in attendance at Spring Kallah, our sole senior for this year, Asher Sonerson, will be graduating at the end of this school year. Everyone in CABIT is immensely proud of Asher, and we bid him good luck as he sets off to experience the next stage of his life. At the same time, he will be greatly missed and remembered by CABIT for years to come. To wrap up our announcements, the current CABIT Board has set the date for elections of our next Board for the year 5778. Elections will be held on May 17th, 2017. If you are interested in running for Board, please contact Sarah Chas-in, Beth Harbison, or Zane Harbison as soon as possible (contact info. at the bottom). We encourage everyone who is even remotely interested to run for Board. Well, that’s all for now! If you have any questions about CABIT, feel free to contact anyone from the list of people below.

April 21, 2017 marks the date that the first teenager from Boise, Idaho ran and was elected for the NFTY Northwest regional board. Zane Harbison and Sarah Chasin, both members of CABIT, worked incredibly hard for months on their platforms for the election of Communications Vice President and finally presented them this weekend at the spring NFTY event in Arlington Washington. Zane is thrilled to serve on board and represent Idaho for this upcoming year as the regional elect.
