ULR Survey If you have not yet returned your ULR survey, there is still time, as we have extended the deadline until the end of the year, and any forms received by 3rd January will be entered into the draw for a book bundle for your branch/workplace. The draw will now take place on 5th January.
In case you have mislaid your original copy, we will send out a pdf version tomorrow to everyone we have an email address for. If you haven’t received yours by mid-day, email [email protected] for your copy. We will also provide a freepost address for your reply. The survey is essential to help ensure that learning opportunities are of the highest quality possible and meet the needs of all learners.
You might be a learner who is not a union rep, who has done other courses, or you may be a union rep that has recently completed a TUC Education course. You might have completed your learning in a college or a learning centre or online. You might have been advised or supported in your learning by a ULR or other rep. Whatever your situation, we would still be very interested in your views and would like you to participate in the survey.
GetOnline@Home - Refurbished computer schemeMicrosoft, have agreed a special arrangement with unionlearn that ULRs can buy up to 6 refurbished computers at the cost of £95 each through the GetOnline@Home scheme www.getonlineathome.org . Microsoft is willing to extend this offer to ULRs in Wales.
As I am sure you can imagine, the competition law constraints around the Microsoft products are severe so they are only able to sell below market price in very particular circumstances.
The GetOnline@Home offer is designed for charities and for those who are on particular government benefits. However, they recognize the importance of union learning reps being able to purchase PCs at this special price and they have secured an exception to the regular rules. Anyone who is a union learning representative is able to buy PCs at the rate of £95.
If ULRs want to buy more than 6, it will be referred to Clare Riley at Microsoft for approval, (because it might look like someone is buying for resale). All Union Learning Reps can buy good numbers to set up their local learning centres/suites.
This is a brilliant offer! Let me know if you take it up and how it all worked out.

Call for evidence: Reps survey on the right to request time to trainIn April 2010, the right to request time to train became law for larger businesses. Unionlearn want to know how it has affected the work of union reps.
The Government is monitoring how successful the law has been and with some groups asking for the right to be abolished; unions are seeking the positive experiences we know workers are having up and down the country. Your responses to this survey are key.The closing date for entries is January 16th so please complete the survey by clicking here.
The Previous survey in August 2010 revealed that at that early stage, there was a growing level of activity to promote the right to trade union members and employers. From a response rate of 623 reps:
35% of respondents had raised policy and procedural matters with their managers
44% had discussed it at their branch or workplace committee 34% have made members aware of the right through their branch or
workplace committee communications 35% had promoted it through their activities on Learning at Work Day 29% said that they had supported a trade union member to formally
exercise their right to request time to train

First Aid courses in the New Year.2-day Outdoor First Aid Training course on 28-29 January A nationally recognised course focusing on wilderness first aid and remote first aid training techniques. Course contents cover first aid course validation of NGB /coaching awards ML Summer, British Mountain Guide, mountain bike awards, Local Cave and Mine Leader.
1-day Emergency First Aid at Work training courses on 17th January and 21st February The 6-hour course covers dealing with incidents, calling for help, treatment of the unconscious casualty, CPR techniques, dealing with bleeding, contents of a first aid kit and medical emergencies. The HSE has developed this training course to replace the longer First Aid at Work course in low hazard environments.

The story of WalesNext year the BBC presenter Huw Edwards is to tell the story of Wales from prehistory to modern times, in a landmark television series made by BBC Cymru Wales in partnership with the Open University. The Story of Wales, a six-part series is due to be shown on BBC One Wales early in 2012 and across the BBC network later in the year.
Presenting the series is "a dream come true for me", says Huw Edwards "How could any Welsh broadcaster not be energised by the challenge of telling the nation’s story? The Story of Wales needs to engage audiences in Wales and beyond. After all, we have a great story to tell.”

Creative writing and reading can improve mood, wellbeing, encourage the development of emotional insight as well as of literacy. This new project, based in Tŷ Newydd, aims to develop the use of creative writing and reading in health and social care.
Ty Newydd is developing courses in Writing in Health and Social Care to increase the opportunities available to writers and health and social care professionals to train in the field. This project will also reach out to those often excluded from the arts for social or personal reasons by developing outreach projects in health and social care which will lead to tailored courses at Tŷ Newydd. We are also working in partnership to develop Reading for Wellbeing in Gwynedd and across North Wales.

Quick Reads from Wales launch on St Dynwen’s DayAs “Fall in love with reading” is a major theme for Quick Reads in 2012, the titles from Wales will be launched on 25 January, the Day of Saint Dwynwen, Wales’s patron saint of lovers.
The UK and Ireland titles will be launched on Valentine’s Day, 14 February, and this will mark the start of a festival of reading which incorporates Quick Reads, World Book Day and World Book Night, providing lots of opportunities to create exciting events and activities around the new books.

A Quick Reads reading break for World Book DayNiace is calling on businesses to hold Reading Breaks to encourage more people to fall in love with reading on World Book Day 2012 (Thursday 1 March 2012) following publication of new Quick Reads from best-selling authors including Maeve Binchy, Alexander McCall Smith, James Caan and Tony Parsons.

On World Book Day 2011 hundreds of schools held Family Reading Breaks where parents and carers joined their children in finding out more about books and how they could help each other explore and enjoy the world of reading together. For the next World Book Day, NIACE is hoping that workplaces will get involved to help reluctant readers discover a passion for books.
To help make these Reading Breaks a success, comprehensive packs for workplaces, complete with copies of the new titles (and a display stand for workplaces only), can be ordered from www.quickreads.org.uk/reading-breaks.

Healthy Working Wales: Free support to maintain and improve the health and well-being of staff.In Wales, on average, sickness absence costs employers £659 per employee each year. However, it is estimated that sickness absence can be reduced by 20-50% with effective practices in the workplace.
The Welsh Government’s workplace health programme, ‘Health Working Wales’ provides a range of free programmes to support employers to maintain and improve the health and well-being of staff.

The Wales Trades Union Congress is a partner in the Health, Work and Well-being Action Plan for Wales, and is actively promoting and championing Healthy Working Wales to its members.
Currently, over 140 businesses / organisations have achieved the Corporate Health Standard / Small Workplace Health Award, and a further 120 employers are engaged and working towards awards. Through these employers, Healthy Working Wales is reaching over 25% of people employed in Wales.
Angela, Anne & the E. P.Angela Baugh and Anne Jenkins from Wales TUC promote the Employer Pledge. They encourage employers to take an active part and work with ULRs and providers to encourage the take up of learning in the workplace. They offer advice on the part that Wales Union Learning Fund (WULF) can play in basic skills learning. We have a Level 2 support course starting in the New Year; aimed at basic skills workplace champions, union learning reps and anyone involved with training and supporting staff in the workplace.
The course will start in the New Year in Parc Menai, Bangor from 9.30-16.30 on 10th February 2012The units are:
Engaging and signposting adults and young people as essential skills learnersSupporting literacy learnersSupporting adults and young people in essential skills learning
All assessment is portfolio based. All attendees will need a placement to complete the supporting units/assignments, including 1 to 1 and group support. ADT can assist with placements on a first come first serve basis. Placements may also take place in your workplace where we are/may be delivering the Employer Pledge programme.

Barefoot Research: A Workers' Manual for Organising On Work Security This manual has been developed to help empower workers to increase their level of control over their own work situations, to protect their health and well being, and to improve their level of basic security. This is a practical guide, providing workers, with tools to: identify work security problems, tackle problems from a worker centred perspective, use barefoot research tools, use the results of Barefoot Research to improve their work security, organize for work security.
The manual was developed by the International Labour Office, but is now hosted by the TUC. It is for free distribution and we encourage groups to make their own wide distribution of this unique tool."
