CyberPatriot The Stacey CyberPatriot team will compete in Round 2 this weekend, December 7th & 8th.

CyberPatriot is the national high school cyber defense competition created by the Air

Force Association (AFA) to excite, educate, and motivate the next generation of cyber defenders

and other science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) graduates our nation

needs.

The Stacey team scored an impressive 80 out of 100 in a grueling 6 hour Round 1 session

on November 16th, finding computer security vulnerabilities on a Windows 7 image.

Round 2 will be even more challenging; the team will attack a Windows Vista and a

Windows Server digital image. Each of those competitions lasts six hours as well.

Drew Poirier, Sam Otto, David Lipsey, Shelby Coppinger and Ryan Berry are on Team 1.

The reserve team consists of Brian Prince, Davis Merica, Sinead Bolton, Abi Arndt, Adam Miller,

and Cody Rivas. The team is coached by Mr. Keller. A group of dedicated volunteers that work

Cyber security with the USAF comes on campus every week to train the Stacey students in the

latest cyber security methods and techniques.

Teams that advance from Round 2 will compete in the national semi-finals in January.

The teams that advance from there get to travel to the national finals in Maryland in March.

Reach the Cyberpatriot facebook page at www.facebook.com/CyberPatriot or check out

the website www.uscyberpatriot.org.

Good luck team!

Why Eat Fruit? Written by Kiana Parham

Last week Mrs.Duron’s Family and Community Services class invited over three

kindergarten classes from the elementary. The high school students taught the classes

about fruits and why they should eat them. The children were read Handa’s Surprise by

Eileen Browne. This book introduced them to fruits that they are familiar with and even

some new ones. After the book was read, the kindergarten students got to try each of the

fruits that were in the story. For every fruit they tried, they received a sticker to add to their

folders. Next, the children helped make strawberry-banana smoothies. Mrs. Duron also

made a super strong smoothie that had a special ingredient (spinach). Every student that

tried the super strong smoothie received a healthy snack. Next week the classes will learn

about vegetables.

8th Grade Visit to Northwest Vista College

By: Rianna Fisher, 8th grader

On November 30th, Mrs. Duron and Ms. Nicholson took a group of 8th graders to visit Northwest Vista College. The goal of this trip was to start giving the kids an idea of what community college is like,

what their options are, and to start thinking of what college they might want to go to. The tour was given by a recruiter at the college, Cathy Gonzalez. She first asked what college we

were thinking about going to, many of us said universities. She explained to us that we don’t always have to go to a university, that Community College could be of choice, and the two year plan really

grabbed my attention. The two year plan is a plan by which you could take community college for two years, earn your associates degree, and then continue on with your education at a university. That way

you can have the best of both worlds.

After the presentation, she took us on the campus tour. At Northwest Vista, they have a nice size

gym and an indoor track, so if there was bad weather outside, they could always use the indoor track. Next, she took us to the library; we actually got to see some students hard at work! I also noticed that

they had a very nice lake; she told us instructors sometimes teach outside by the lake. Another interesting thing I remember is that she said there is a speech room where you can watch yourself when

you’re practicing for a presentation to see what you do while you are presenting and to see what you could do better!

This tour was very beneficial to the 8th graders because it is important to know what our options are after we graduate. We need to know that community college is just as good as any university out

there. Many thanks to Northwest Vista College for inviting us to tour their campus!

Stacey Profile: Mrs. Tashun Howard Jackson

Yes, you've probably seen her at lunch monitoring the cafeteria. Of course,

that is not all she does; she is a mother, and also a teacher‘s aide here at

Stacey. When asked if she always wanted to be in the education field, she said

"No, this is something that just ‘came’ to me about 2 years ago". Even so, Mrs.

Jackson considers her favorite part of her job interacting with the students. "I

like to see students strive for good grades and love to hear about what colleges

they plan to attend", she says. When she attended high school, her favorite

classes were English IV and Algebra II, but she also had least favorite classes,.

Hers was Spanish II, because, “I found it hard to make the correct sounds",

she says. Like most students, she also had an opinion on school lunch. She says

that, "School lunch then was good to me at the time, really unhealthy of

course". When asked about school lunch now, she adds "Now, it's healthier so I

give it an 8 right now and maybe a 5 back then". Mrs. Jackson was also asked

about interesting things people here at Stacey might not know about her. For

instance, she has lived in the Mojave Desert in California, her first pet was a

German Shepherd named Missy, and her favorite comfort food is ice cream.

Also, considering it is the holiday season, Mrs. Jackson was asked what her

favorite part of the holidays is. Just like many others she says that her

favorite part is "..Seeing family and gift giving (to me of course!)", and who

could disagree. These are just a few interesting things that you should know

about Mrs. Jackson.

**Cookie Drop Off will be from 6:00 to 9:00 am in the chapel parking lot. **Packaging will be in the chapel kitchen from 8:00 to 11:30 am. Cookies can be dropped off a day early on Sunday, December 16th at 1832 Yount Circle (in Lemay Estates, near the golf course on Lackland). Bakers: Please bake up a storm! We ask that you refrain from using nuts of any kind because of allergies. While chocolate chip cookies are wonderful, please consider donating a variety of different types of cookies.
