Processional Hymn: This text celebrates the radical hospitality that characterizes Christ’s welcome, which transcends time and reaches in all directions (Matthew 8:11/Luke 13:29). Saints of old are, like us, people in need of forgiveness, and the response to such pardon is “thanks and praise.” Choral Introit: Although this paraphrase of Psalm 145 is abbreviated (the original psalm has a verse for each letter of the Hebrew alphabet), it maintains the tone of praise that characterizes the final six psalms. In fact, the whole book takes its Hebrew name, Tehillim (praises), from them. Hymn: The first woman to publish a collection of her own anthems, this author/composer has created in this hymn a sung prayer for illumination. Affirmation of Faith: The Confession ofBelhar was written in1986 by the UnitingReformed Church ofSouthern Africa (URCSA)after the end ofapartheid in SouthAfrica as a gift to theglobal Reformed family, believing that it'sthemes of unity, reconciliation, andjustice issue a call fromGod to the wholechurch toward holyaction, transformationand life.

Offertory Anthem:Written for Pentecostby British Baptist pastor,Robert Robinson(1735-90), this text is full ofbiblical terms such as“Ebenezer”, which isHebrew for “a stone ofhelp”, set up to givethanks to God’s loveand assistance. Thetune honors hymncompiler AsahelNettleton, who morethan likely, did notcompose it. JamesQuitman Mulholland (b.1935) is Professor ofMusic at ButlerUniversity and wasDirector of Music atFirst-Meridian HeightsPresbyterian Church, both in Indianapolis. Many of hiscompositions havebecome standardrepertoire for children'schoirs throughout thecountry, as well as mostcollegiate andprofessional ensembles.

RESPONDING TO THE WORD

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (excerpts from Confession of Belhar) Rev. Dr. Todd SpeedWe believe in the triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, who gathers,

protects and cares for the church through Word and Spirit. This, God has donesince the beginning of the world and will do to the end.

We believe in one holy, universal Christian church, the communion of saintscalled from the entire human family.

We believe that Christ’s work of reconciliation is made manifest in the churchas the community of believers who have been reconciled with God and with oneanother. We believe that this unity can be established only in freedom and notunder constraint; that the variety of spiritual gifts, opportunities, backgrounds, convictions, as well as the various languages and cultures, are by virtue of thereconciliation in Christ, opportunities for mutual service and enrichment within theone visible people of God.

PRESENTATION OF TITHES AND OFFERINGS

ANTHEM: Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing arr. James MulhollandChancel Choir

Come, Thou Fount of every blessing, Tune my heart to sing Thy grace; Streams of mercy, neverceasing, Call for songs of loudest praise. Teach me some melodious sonnet, Sung by flamingtongues above; Praise the mount! I’m fixed upon it, Mount of God’s unchanging love. Here Iraise my Ebenezer, Hither by Thy help I’m come; And I hope, by Thy good pleasure, Safely toarrive at home. Jesus sought me when a stranger, Wandering from the fold of God; He, to rescueme from danger, Interposed His precious blood. O to grace how great a debtor Daily I’mconstrained to be! Let that grace now, like a fetter, Bind my wandering heart to Thee: Prone towander, Lord, I feel it, Prone to leave the God I love; Here’s my heart, O take and seal it, Sealit for Thy courts above.

[Robert Robinson]

Volunteers Needed for Hagar’s HouseDPC’s next week to provide meals for Hagar’s House (a localshelter for homeless women and children) is September 24through September 30. Hagar’s House is managed byDecatur Cooperative Ministry (DCM ) and is supported bycongregations like ours throughout the county. DPC typicallyprovides dinners four different weeks during the year.

Any given night, there may be 4-5 women and their childrenliving at the shelter. The total, including volunteers who dinewith them, may be 25 – 30 people.

They are grateful for any hearty and healthy meal you planthat is kid friendly. Meals may be made from scratch orready-to-go from a restaurant or grocery store. You shouldarrive with everything ready to serve, as the Hagar’s Housekitchen is not equipped for more than warming up.

Catherine Carter coordinates volunteers from DPC andwould love to hear from you. If you are first time volunteers, she can match you up with more experienced volunteers. This is a gratifying project to take on with your PW circle,Sunday School class, pew buddies, or neighbors. You canreach Catherine at [email protected] or call her cellphone at (404) 861-7656.
