There are many wonderful health benefi ts to being WinterActive. Spending time outdoors in the winter sun and the cold & crisp air is so benefi cial to our body, spirit and overall well being. Outdoor activities give people a wonderful sense of connection to the outdoor environment. The benefi ts of natural light and fresh air serve to not only improve physical health, but also enhances our spiritual and emotional health. There is an innate connection to the environment that begins to occur when the body is exposed to the elements. Being outdoors in the winter is simply invigorating and revitalizing.

According to Lauraine Myers, research indicates key facts to being outdoors in the winter:

Outdoor activities are de-stressing and contributes to an overall healthy well being.

Balances hormones and promotes weight loss.

Raises metabolism to compensate for your body adjusting to temperature.

An excellent way to strengthen your heart year round, as well as increase respiratory response.

Exposure to natural areas increases positive emotions while negative emotions decrease -even those winter blahs.

*adapted from The Examiner, Lauraine Myers.

AquaticsAquaticsCold Water SurvivalOver many years Canadian doctor Gordon Giesbrecht – also known as Professor Popsicle – has researched the effects of cold water immersion and has coined the phrase ‘1-10-1’ as a simple way to remember the fi rst 3 critical phases of cold water immersion and the approximate time each phase takes.1 - Cold Shock: An initial deep and sudden gasp followed by severe hyperventilation. You must keep your airway clear or run the risk of drowning. Cold Shock will pass in about 1 minute. Concentrate on avoiding panic and getting control of your breathing. Wearing a lifejacket is critically important to keep you afl oat and breathing.10 - Cold Incapacitation: Over approximately the next 10 minutes you will lose the use of your fi ngers, arms and legs for any meaningful movement. Concentrate on self-rescue initially and prepare to have a way to keep your airway clear to wait for rescue. Swim failure will occur within these critical minutes and if you are in the water without a lifejacket, drowning will likely occur.1 - Hypothermia: Even in ice water it could take approximately 1 hour before becoming unconscious due to hypothermia. If you understand the aspects of hypothermia, techniques of how to delay it, self rescue and calling for help, your chances of survival and rescue will be dramatically increased.

Early YearsEarly YearsPhysical Literacy is about developing the FUNdamental movement skills and the FUNdamental sports skills so kids have the confi dence and competence to do ANYTHING they want in order to be active for life. The basic environments where children should learn fundamental movement skills are on the ground, in the water, on the snow and ice and in the air. Just as learning the alphabet is needed to read, the ABCs - agility, balance and coordination are some of the skills that support physical literacy.

Some activities to get you started this winter are:- Preschool ice skating- Building a snow man- Making snow angels- Jumping into a pile of snow- Swimming during public swims - Building a snow fort- Signing up for indoor recreation programs

Develop your child’smovement vocabulary

so they have the best chance at being active for life! Check out our physical

literacy programs in our Early Years section.

Did you know?

Playing active video games still doesn’t give your children the physical activity that they require. According to activehealthykids.ca, active video games may get heart rates up, but they’re not signifi cantly helping kids get to the 60 minutes of moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity required each day. Screen time, including active video games always poses a threat to play; unstructured play in our natural environment.

Embrace the cold with a great attitude, warm clothes and spontaneous, unstructured activities. Getting ready to go outside can seem like a daunting task, but why not make it fun? Start by creating a list including pictures of items your child will need to stay warm outside. This can help your child independently get ready - even if they can’t read a list, they can refer to the pictures. You could even make a race out of it! Challenge your child to get ready before you do.

Unplugging and reducing your screen time in the winter doesn’t have to be a challenging experience, but rather an opportunity to bond with your child(ren) and enjoy playing together, outside in our natural environment.

Doll brothersWhether Hudson (10) and Luke (9) are playing in their basement, on their driveway or on the ice, their favorite Winter activity is hockey. When they are not playing hockey you will fi nd them public skating at the local arenas or at the WCP outdoor rink. A special winter outing is tubing at Harper mountain.

FamilyFamilyUsing Your Five Senses to be WinterActiveEncourage unstructured active play outside in the snow. Jolanda Hengstman from Sixty Second Parent has an activity that not only gets kids outdoors, but gets them thinking about the outdoors, too.

Take your kids on a walk and have them choose one of the fi ve senses and ask them questions about how they are using that sense.

Hearing: What do we hear? Is it loud or soft? Can you mimic the sound? These can be natural sounds as well as man-made sounds.

Touch: Can you touch something tall, round, or yellow? Is it rough or smooth? Is it warm or cold?

Sight: Play the game “I Spy…” or ask wondering questions like, “How can you see if the wind is blowing?”

Taste: What do you think _____ tastes like? Does the air have a taste?

Smell: What do you smell? Does this have a smell? You may also increase the fun by challenging your kids to run, jump, hop, skip or slide on snow.

Cooking is a wonderful activity to do with the little people in your life. The holiday season brings us together whether we are a family by birth or a family by choice. The age of technology means that many youngsters are constantly distracted by screens. Why not take advantage of the opportunity to connect and make some memories (don’t forget the camera!). The kids will feel a great sense of accomplishment when they show off their fi nished product. Here is a recipe to try with grandkids or special little friends:
