Safety Tip of the Week

From the AMA, we have many safety tips that we will share on a weekly basis. Here is our first one…

Avoid School Parking Lots - Poor visibility and cramped spaces make parking lots dangerous for drivers and pedestrians. Please respect ‘No Parking’ signs and encourage your kids to walk around, rather than cut through.

OLR School Plans

Did you know that our school plans are available on our school website? OLR School Plans 2017-18 Every once in a while, we will feature one of our school goals in the weekly news and let you know some ways that we are striving to meet this goal in our school. Under the area of Faith development: School Outcome: To examine and experience many forms of prayer and devotion and enhance the Faith lives of students, staff and families. Throughout this year, we have already done many great things to meet our outcome:

- Rosary Club – student praying the rosary - Staff prayers every Friday morning - Monthly liturgies - Advent Mass at St Albert the Great - Service projects – Terry Fox Run, St. Vincent de Paul food and gift hampers - Staff – examining the “marks of a Catholic teacher”

We have many more service projects and prayer opportunities planned for the remainder of the school year.

Grade 6 Class Elections

In the month of December, Mrs. Landry’s grade 6 class has been running and participating a class mayor campaign. The students in the class have actively engaged in and enhanced their learning about government and the election process. They completed nomination forms, supported classmates in their

campaigns, listened to platform speeches from the candidates, and led a debate about issues affecting our class. Election day is Friday, December 15th for electing the 2018 6L Class Mayor!!!

Candy canes in Ms. Carpenter’s Kindergarten Class

Every year as Christmas nears, candy canes appear all over. This week, the kindergarten students read about the legend of the candy cane and learned that the special candy was designed to be a delicious reminder of what Christmas is truly about - Jesus. We had fun using our fine motor and patterning skills to create candy cane ornaments to hang on our trees at home. Each time we see the hanging ornament we are reminded

that Christmas is about Jesus Christ our Savior!

Baking in Mrs. Tedesco’s Kindergarten! This week Mrs. Tedesco’s Kindergarten class baked Gingerbread People. We practiced our collaboration skills by listening to each other and sharing in the

work. We practiced our fine motor skills by using both our power grips to knead, pat and press and our chopper fingers to handle our gingerbread people. We also explored materials (ingredients) in our environment and learned how these materials are used (make yummy cookies). A huge thank you to our volunteer parents who helped! Learning is fun!

Alberta Education

Accountability Pillar Survey

As an annual check-up on the education system, the Accountability Pillar provides an opportunity for Alberta Education and school authorities to ensure that we are equipping students for success.

The Accountability Pillar uses a set of 16 indicators. Data on these indicators consists of surveys of

students, parents and teachers on various aspects of education

quality, student outcomes such as dropout and high school

completion rates, and provincial assessments of student

learning.

From January to the end of February, Alberta Education will be conducting the annual Accountability Pillar Survey.

• In January, parents of students in grades 4 - 6 will receive a survey from Alberta Education.

• In February, students in grades 4-6 and all teachers will be completing their surveys online at school.

All surveys are anonymous and ask questions about experiences with your school. In addition to English and French, the parent survey is available in Chinese, Punjabi, Arabic, Blackfoot, Dene, Cree, Korean, Spanish, Tagalog and Urdu. Your participation in the survey helps provide important information on the quality of education your child is receiving, so we encourage you to return your survey promptly. Survey results will be available to school authorities in May 2018, and will be reported publicly as part of their 3-Year Education Plans and Annual Education Results Reports.

Scientists in School for Grade 4s On Thursday, Students in Grade 4 were given the opportunity to experience “Wheels in Motion” with the Scientists in School program. Students examined many different types of simple machines and got a hands-on experience that students deemed “awesome,” “fantastic” and “fun.” Students rotated through five different stations and used their scientific thinking to answer

questions and share their thoughts about how people make use of these simple machines. Can you name the simple machines you use everyday? We can now!
