FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT
“ANGELS FROM THE REALMS OF GLORY”
In positioning the paschal candle in the baptistery area, the statue of the angel playing the flute was displaced. Fittingly, it migrated (or flew) up to the right side of the sanctuary, in the choir area, where it has been for some time now. I say fittingly not only because she is playing the flute but because she is a dedicated offering to the memory of Stephanie Marie Hare, a young flautist who was not only an instrumentalist but a member of the Bell Choir and the Teen Choir in this church who also participated in parish stage shows. She succumbed at the early age of twenty to cancer of the tongue. Her father, Ray, is a still a member of the choir as well as an usher and her mother, once a bell ringer, belongs to our parish family. In recent months, a gentleman has been reaching out to me through the office. The message I was getting and finally received when we met had to do with that angel. He said, “I would like to give another angel statue for the other side of the altar so that there will be balance.” After some back and forth and investigation, I found an angel statue in proportion to the other one, ordered it and received prompt and happy payment from the gentleman. Exhibited on a stand that proved to be too small, the donor reached out again saying, “I would like to give a new base for the statue and have a dedication on it.” Again, I managed to oblige, ordering not one but two stands - one for each angel - following through myself in favor of balance. Just two weeks ago I saw him and led him to the new praying angel on its new pedestal. He was very pleased. I took advantage of our encounter to have him spell out what he wished the dedication to say. This he did and I soon went to Crown Trophy with the order to have Enrichetta Belluscio – Italy – 1915-1990 engraved on a little plaque. On the Friday after Thanksgiving he came into the rectory to pay for the stand at which time I told him the dedication had been ordered, would soon be delivered and that I would show it to him prior to adhering it to the base, to make sure the spelling was correct. Thus we looked forward to the completion of his intention.

Divorced & Separated Group
This program helps grieving separated and divorced individuals emerge from the darkness of grief into the light of a new beginning. It helps move these individuals into the future with new hope. The program helps deal with the natural grief process and offers an opportunity through God to turn the pain of loss into an experience of positive growth. This ministry is open to all faiths. It meets in the evening on the 2
nd and 4
th Wednesday of each month at
St. Christopher’s Hall. For further information, please contact Santa at 718-987-3795.
You may have seen him before a Sunday Mass these past months as he felt drawn to lead prayer as part of the Sunday Rosary Ministry. What is remarkable is that even though he was a parishioner of another Staten Island parish, he found some satisfaction in prayerful service and generous artistic cooperation here.
I am sorry to report that Mr. Antonio Belluscio died overnight on the 26th of this month. I am stunned by his sudden and unexpected death. He was laid to rest this past Friday at Resurrection Cemetery.
As far as I knew him, it seems to me that his most recent purpose on site was happily accomplished. Now we can pray that he is not just in the presence of the image of angels but with the angels themselves.
Father Travers
