remains undeclared and talks takeplace away from public view. Indeedsources suggest that Saudi Arabiahas even agreed to open its air spaceto the IAF

Some in Israel worry thatSaudi Arabia and its Gulf State allieswould not hesitate to turn on Israelshould circumstances in Iran change. They argue that the Israeli-GulfStates link could be a fleeting one ifthe nuclear threat from Iran fades.

We share the belief, however, that consultation between Israel andthe Sunni axis will continue to growand that both sides recognize thebenefits of long-term strategic andeven economic cooperation. Whilethe United States fiddles on Iran, while Obama’s “red lines” in Syriaare shown to be mere rhetoric, Israelhas proven to the Gulf States that itis no paper tiger. Sunni nations seeIsrael’s destruction of Syria’s nuclearprogram in 2007, its war againstHezbollah in 2006 and againstHamas in 2009 and 2012, and itsassaults on Iranian-Syrian-Hezbollah weapons stockpiling asevidence of a willingness to act whilethe current occupant of the WhiteHouse holds up the white flag.“There is a lot of cynicism”, saysMishaal al Gergawi, a United ArabEmirates analyst, “and it feeds intothe notion that Obama is naive...hewas naive with the MuslimBrotherhood, naive with Bashar al-Assad and he is now naive withIran”. The Saudis may not, as theIranian government official Englishlanguage press told readers sarcasti-cally, be advocating a merger of thetwo countries into Saudi Israeliawith the state religion of Zio-Wahabbism. But it just might not bethat far fetched to suggest that thesounds of Hatikva will, in the nottoo distant future, be heard inRiyadh’s halls of power.

It is often assumed that Israelis alone in its refusal to accept atface value Iranian president HassanRouhani’s all out PR offensive. It isBenjamin Netanyahu who warnsagainst the “P5 plus 1” negotiatingthe “deal of the century” for Iran. Itis Israel that scolds the UnitedStates for “folding” on Iran.

But the fact is that many ofIsrael’s neighbours also fear thatthe “P5 plus 1” will fall for a “pret-ty face”. Sunni Gulf States - SaudiArabia, Bahrain, the United ArabEmirates, Qatar - share Israel’sconcern that the United States andothers will be making a “grave mis-take” if they are gullible enough tobelieve that Iran now subscribesto the same moral code as dodecent men and civilized nations. These countries have “joined”Israel in asking how civilizednations can sit, basically witharms folded, while Iran’s nuclearambitions go unchecked, threaten-ing regional and world stabilityand leading inevitably to a Shiitehegemony in the Middle East.Along with the region’s minorities -Kurds, Christians, Druse, Sufisand Baluchis - Sunni nations seeIsrael as the only country preparedto make Iran pay for its folly. It isIsrael, Sunni states have come tothe realization, that has the mili-tary power to prevent the MiddleEast from becoming helots of theAyatollahs and their “bloodthirsty,baby-eating Shiite monsters”.

The shared interests of Israeland the Sunni Arab gulf states donot mean that formal diplomaticrelations are imminent. ThePalestinian issue will likely have tobe resolved before the gulf statescan be seen sitting at the same tablewith the Israelis. But consultationson security and intelligence issuescont inue , e v en i f t h e a l l i ance

A Joyous Chanukah Celebration

The consultation onBDS presently being con-ducted by the MethodistChurch of Great Britaincould have very serious con-sequences and, for those ofus keen to develop greaterawareness across the faith-ful in both Judaism andChristianity, is a matter ofgrave concern.

For fifteen years Ihave been a member of theCouncil of Christians andJews and earlier this year asmall number of us foundedMethodist Friends ofJudaism. We had come tobelieve it necessary to focusm o r e s h a r p l y o n t h e

Methodist/Jewish relation-ship in Great Britain. Wesimply intended to buildbridges and cross them toshake hands, maybe evenembrace, but certainly, given the opportunity, toenter into dialogue.

Our aims are as fol-lows:

• To celebrate thecontribution of Judaism tonot only Christianity but

also to the world at large.• To raise awareness

of the historic and continu-ing presence of anti-Judaism within theChristian Church.

• To challenge anti-Semitism in whatever guiseit manifests itself.

We are also chargedwith carrying out activitiesappropriate to the deliveryof these aims.

We were and remainkeen to fulfil our aimswhich are theological, his-torical and cultural, notpolitical in any partisansense. It was never ourintention to becomeembroiled in debate onIsrael Palestine; but I guessit was inevitable!

So, following anotice of motion at the 2013Methodist Conference call-ing on the church to drawup a report that presentsthe arguments for andagainst BDS, a number ofus became part of the con-sultation.

INFORMATION WAR ISRAEL CREATES NEW WEBSITE TO COUNTER HIZBULLAH PROPAGANDA

By LINDA GRADSTEIN, MEDIA LINE

If you click on theIsraeli army’s newHizbullah website, you willsee a red and black logothat reads, “Hizbullah,Army of Terror.” The site isa combination of graphics, text and videos, all focusingon the Lebanese-based,Iran-proxy terrorist organi-zation and its leader,Sheikh Hassan Na’srallah.

One link refers backto what Israelis call theSecond Lebanon War of2006, and in fact, the sitewas launched on the sev-enth anniversary of that 34-day war between Hizbullahand Israel that was trig-gered by a cross-border raidby Hizbullah fighters that

left eight Israeli soldiersdead and two captured. Itended with a United Nations– brokered cease-fire.

The website warnsthat Hizbullah today isstronger than ever.

“Seven years later,Hizbullah has developedcapabilities to strike any-where in Israel,” it says.

A neon-green graph-ic that follows the textshows the differentweapons Hizbullah now hasin its arsenal and how fareach one is able to reach. The missile with the longestrange, the Scud-D, cantravel more than 430 miles, potentially penetrating deepinto Egypt and Saudi Arabia

as well as Israel, as well astargeting American militaryassets in the region.

“Since the war,Hizbullah has tripled thesize of its missile arsenal,”the website says. “In 2009,an IDF intelligence reportrevealed that Hizbullah hadbuilt close to 1,000 militaryfacilities throughout south-ern Lebanon. The installa-tions included more than550 weapons bunkers and300 underground facilities.Since the report’s release,Hizbullah has continued tobuild facilities in the region, enhancing its ability tostrike at nearby Israelitowns and cities.”

The webs i te says

that Israel is in more dangerthan ever before“Hizbullah’s weapons arecapable of causing far moresubstantial damage than its2006 arsenal,” the websitecontinues. “With its currentabilities, Hizbullah is capa-ble of bombarding Israelwith continuous, preciseattacks over an extendedperiod of time.”

The website is theproduct of Israel’s newinteractive media branch, aspin-off from the IDFSpokesman’s Unit.Lieutenant Colonel AvitalLeibovich, the head of thenew branch, says some 30soldiers work there, and put

Israel and the Palestinians, everything, even a ham-burger, is political. Israeliswho live in areas that Israelacquired in 1967 are up inarms over McDonald’s deci-sion not to open a branch inthe mall that will be built inAriel over the next year.

In Israel, theMcDonald’s franchise is pri-vate and is owned by OmriPadan, one of the foundersof the dovish group PeaceNow, which opposes Israelibuilding in post-1967areas. There are 170McDonald’s restaurants inIsrael, about 40 of whichare kosher. The company’swebsite claims it is thelargest employer of youth in

Others went evenfurther.

“I urge the public toboycott anyone who boy-cotts it,” Housing MinisterUri Ariel said. “Only thenwill they get the messageand the boycotts will stop.”

Oppenheimer ofPeace Now reacted sharplysaying Padan’s decision isnot a boycott.

“Nobody is sayingthat “settlers” are notallowed to buy McDonald’s,”he said, referring to Israeliswho live in post-1967 areas.“You can’t fault him for notbuilding in a place theydon’t want to remain part of

Padan declined togive an interview to TheMedia Line but his officesent a one-line reply.

“This has alwaysbeen the policy of Dr. OmriPadan,” referring to thedecision not to open restau-rants in Ariel, the GolanHeights, which Israel cap-tured from Syria in 1967, oreven East Jerusalem, whichIsrael has annexed.

Some in Israel wel-comed Padan’s decision “Inevery democratic countryeveryone has the right todecide where to live andwhere to open his busi-ness,” Yariv Oppenheimer,

the director general of PeaceNow told The Media Line.“Padan did not want to takepart in “settlement” activity. He thinks the “settlements”are damaging to Israel andwe agree.”

Some right-wingleaders disagreed.

Settler leader YigalDilmony said that while hedoesn’t support boycottsconsumers should vote withtheir wallets.

“Every citizen whocares about the state ofIsrael should think beforehe buys a burger who is hefinancing?” Dilmony askedThe Media Line. “BurgerRanch (a rival local Israelichain) said they will open inthe new mall. Israeli citi-

For me BDS clearlyfits Sharansky’s ‘three Ds’for anti-Semitism; delegit-imizing, double standardsand demonizing the state ofIsrael. It is therefore diffi-cult for anyone supportingBDS to avoid the charge ofanti-Semitism. It is clearthat singling out the onlyJewish state in the world forsuch action is utterly repre-

hensible and blatantlyimmoral.

It is extraordinarythat at a time when the civilwar in Syria is costing thelives of tens of thousands, when ancient Christiancommunities are being per-secuted and destroyed, when there is so muchinjustice in the region, letalone across the globe, thatanyone should considerboycotting the only Jewishstate in the world.

During the 60thanniversary commemora-tion of the liberation ofAuschwitz the then BritishPrime Minister Tony Blairsaid that the Holocaustbegan not with gas cham-bers but broken shop win-dows. Members of the BDSmovement have protestedoutside shops simplybecause they are owned byJews. This is not the sort ofaction any of us shouldallow without the strongestpossible condemnation.

I am reminded of aJew who walked on roadsmade by slave labour with-out apparent reference tothem; he certainly didn’tboycott them. I am remind-ed of a Jew who warnedagainst making judgmentsof others without acknowl-edging our own faults. It isthe teaching of that Jewthat I seek to follow.

It is highly fashion-able to don a keffiyeh in theWest and sign petitionsagainst Israel. But none ofthis is new. Nor is tellinglies about Jews. In everygeneration anti-Semitismhas found different ways ofexpressing itself. For manycenturies of course it wasreligiously based. Postenlightenment it becameracially based. Today it ispolitically based. Othershave more eloquentlydescribed it as a virus thatmutates each time a versionof it is seen for what it is.

There is a wonderfulstory about a conversation

from the time of theVietnam War between HenryKissinger and the preacherWilliam Sloane Coffin.Following an attack on the

York. Both vowed never toreturn to German.

But in the late1990s Margot had a changeof heart. Her husbandpassed away in 1997 andshe began writer a memoir. It was entitled “Try to Makea Life”, her mother’s partingmessage to her. Germandocumentary producerThomas Halaczinsky, wholives in New York, heardFriedlander read from hermemoirs and asked her if hecould do a documentary onher life. But doing the doc-umentary required a returnto Berlin.

In 2003, at the ageof 82, Margot Friedlanderagreed to return to Berlin. The work on the documen-tary, called “Don’t Call ItNostalgia”, made her feel “Iwas home again”. And, so ,despite the fact that herfriends in New York urged

her to reconsider, threeyears ago, at age 89,Friedlander moved back toBerlin.

Now, she shares herstory with Germanteenagers. “I want them toknow how I felt, what I wasthinking, what happened inthe house when the Gestapocame for my brother”, shesays. “The feeling of ahuman being who has expe-rienced this - that is what Iwant to impress on them”.And she adds that the six-teen Germans who hid her“did not know me. I wascared for by good people, even though they did notknow me”.

Friedlander’s loyaltyto Germany does have onelimitation. When she pass-es away, she wants to bereturned to the UnitedStates to be buried with herlate husband.
