“But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid; for see – I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people…” (Luke 2:10)
From the very beginning, the Christian Church has proclaimed this “good news” of the birth of Jesus Christ. In Christ, the church
has shared the “good news” of God’s love coming into creation in this special way, through the incarnation. In Christ, the church
proclaims the “good news” of the grace of Christ given in his life, death, resurrection and ascension until he returns.
This act of proclamation is the second of the marks of the church. Called kerygma, it describes the act of proclaiming as well as the
proclamation. The church proclaims this “good news” as a major function of its life. From preachers and teachers to the written
word, the church from the beginning has been involved in the act of kerygma.
And what a great proclamation we have to offer the world! We proclaim the wonderful gift of Jesus Christ! God’s love poured out
for us and for our salvation! In God’s act of restoration and hope revealed in the life of Jesus, we find one who teaches us to love
one another in our love for God. What better news to proclaim than this!
Kerygma is an important mark in the life of the church. Proclamation of the “good news of Jesus Christ” separates us from other
institutions of our society. Many other groups in society have news to proclaim. Sport proclaims the joy of competition and win-
ning. Politics proclaims the wonderment of governing. Medicine proclaims the healing arts and science. Science proclaims the
accomplishment of discovery and understanding. Civic life proclaims the comfort of national pride. Only the church proclaims the
“good news” of Jesus Christ! Indeed, that distinction separates us from the heralds of the world.
“Hark, the herald angels sing,” reminds us of the kerygma we in the church proclaim. Only in the church’s proclamation do we
hear the “good news” of Jesus the “newborn King.” Only in the church’s proclamation is the joy of the coming of Jesus Christ
shared with a world in need. Only in the church’s kerygma is this joy for all shared!
This mark of the church gives it life. As we proclaim the “good news” of Jesus, we offer the promise of new life to the world. So,
our proclamation is much needed today. The Word shared in worship – through preaching, prayer, song – is our participation in
proclamation. The news of Jesus’ love taught in Sunday School, youth groups, and other settings of the church, is our participation
in proclamation. The lives changed by our outreach of care through offerings and projects of collecting diapers, food and clothing
for the needy, is our participation in proclamation. Our life of prayer for the needs of others is our participation in proclamation.
Our simple acts of welcoming the stranger, greeting the newcomer, showing God’s love is our participation in proclamation. What
other ways can you envision our kerygma, the proclamation of God’s love in Jesus Christ, in the life of the church?
As you see, kerygma is more than just words spoken from the pulpit. Kerygma is each and every moment when the church pro-
claims the love of God in Jesus Christ, whether in spoken word or prayerful thought or concrete deed. We are a people of procla-
mation, a people of kerygma!
In this season of Christmas, let us rejoice in this mark of the church, as we continue to share the “good news” of Jesus Christ, which
is for all the people!

Another gem from the past, this writing calls us to remember the season – to bring the “good news of great joy for all”!
Let this challenge and inspire us during this season. ~Pastor Tony

GIVING TREE FOR OAK PARK FAMILIES: It’s Gift-
Giving Time! For many years the Wentz’s Church family has
been very generous in providing gifts to local families in
need. Every year we get a list of gifts for approximately 12
children. I then divide the list up so that many families can
participate by buying individual gifts. If you take a gift card
from the tree, please return it with the gift so that we can
make sure it goes to the child who requested it. The youth
group will wrap the gifts for the children as a service pro-
ject. It is really a wonderful way for many members to par-
ticipate in the joy of giving. The gift list is available now. We
are asking that your Christmas Gifts be returned no later than
December 13, which will give me time to deliver them. If
you would like to contribute, but do not want to shop – let
me know. Please feel free to contact me with any ques-
tions. Thanks in advance for your heart-felt generosity.

Worship Schedule
Beginning in the new year, January 3, 2016, our worship ser-
vices will be slightly changed. We will continue to have two
services each Sunday, one at 8:30 am and the other at 10:45 am.
The 10:45 am service will continue to be our “traditional” ser-
vice, with special music and choirs participating.
The change will be the 8:30 am services. On the first Sunday of
each month, this service will be the Journey Service, with the
Journey Band leading the worship. We will continue to cele-
brate communion at this service. The rest of the Sundays of the
month, the 8:30 am service will be similar to our “traditional”
service without the special music and choirs on a regular basis.
The hope in changing the format of the 8:45 am service is to
offer other opportunities for people to gather in worship. If you
have any questions, please see Pastor Tony. Copies of the Bethany Wish List are available at the
Welcome Desk. Please bring in your UNWRAPPED
gifts no later than December 13. Thank you.
