A member of the AdvancEd team who recently evaluated and re-accredited our school said, “Covington Catholic High School is a school that never rests.” Clearly, with this accreditation review, and the announcement that Covington Catholic was selected as a 2016 National Blue Ribbon School, this statement is proven.

AdvancED is “the global leader in providing continuous improvement and accreditation services to over 32,000 institutions serving 20 million students worldwide.” Five experienced educators, including principals and assistant principals from four other Catholic schools in Kentucky, served on the accreditation external review team. The team’s review scope included a school Self-Assessment, interviews of 67 school stakeholders, 20 classroom observations, assessment relative to AdvancED standards, and a determination of consensus on the report findings. The result reaffirmed the positive accreditation received in the previous review of 2011.

Less than two weeks earlier, Covington Catholic High School was named a 2016 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education, as one of only two high schools in Kentucky to receive this honor. Further, CovCath is the ONLY Kentucky high school to win the Blue Ribbon award twice in the past decade (and one of only about 30 high schools nationwide to do so).

Why do we so value these external reviews? Because, they affirm our success in continuous improvement. Among the examples cited in these reviews were:

• The positive trend of our ACT scores over the last ten plus years, with the Class of 2016 earning a composite average of 26.3, the highest in school history.

• The continuous development of our curriculum, with the addition or revamp of over 40 courses, including many technology courses such as Graphic Design and CAD, AP courses such as AP Statistics and AP Chemistry, electives in several disciplines, and the new STEM curriculum.

• Three KHSAA state championships and over 40 extracurricular clubs which exemplify that our students receive a well-rounded education.

• The overall culture, with: a broad sense of ownership; respectful and highly courteous interactions between students and adults; expectations for excellence; a collaborative atmosphere; and commitment to continual growth and improvement.

These aspects are rooted in our Catholic identity, and made possible by the persistence and dedication of our amazing faculty and staff. I feel this same spirit from our alumni who continually step up to make a difference in the lives of our young men through their dedication of time, talents and treasure.

Of course, more exciting developments are on the horizon at CovCath. Campus improvements will begin with the stadium renovation in December 2016, followed by the construction of the STEM/Fine Arts addition and Student/Alumni Center, both of which are expected to begin in May 2017.

We constantly seek ways to optimize the Covington Catholic experience for our students, and perpetuate the Colonel alumni pride. Please be assured that we will never rest in our quest to fulfill these goals. Thank you for making Covington Catholic a community “With a Spirit That Will Not Die.”

God’s blessings,

Bob Rowe

FEATURES FEATURES

The U.S. Education Secretary John B. King, Jr., announced in late September that Covington Catholic High School was one of 329 (public and private elementary, middle and high) schools nationwide to receive this award. After a rigorous and thorough assessment, Covington Catholic was selected in the Exemplary High Performing category, identifying CovCath as “among [Kentucky’s] highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests.” In fact, CovCath was one of only two Kentucky high schools to receive the 2016 award, and the ONLY high school in Kentucky to receive the Blue Ribbon award TWICE in the past decade.Mr. Bob Rowe, Mrs. Carol Rasp (World Languages Department Chair and Teacher), and Mr. Bill Krumpelbeck (Science Department Chair, Teacher, and Coach) represented Covington Catholic at a two-day awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. in November to celebrate this achievement. The entire school community will participate in a celebration on December 5th, with the Most Reverend Roger J. Foys as well as other special guests in attendance. A congratulatory dinner for staff and faculty and their guests is also planned, with event sponsorship by Bill Butler (Corporex), and special award items provided by Barry Dyas (J. Charles). Faculty and students will receive 2016 National Blue Ribbon School shirts, courtesy of the CCH Parents Club.. Here are some thoughts from various CCH stakeholders as to what the Blue Ribbon represents at CovCath:

GARY STEGMAN (CCH CLASS OF 1982, SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER, PARENT OF COLONELS BENJAMIN, A CURRENT SENIOR, AND CHRISTOPHER, A CURRENT FRESHMAN)This award is the pinnacle of recognition of the collective quality and value of the school. It is recognition of the high standards that are in place across the school: curriculum and test scores; extracurricular opportunities and social activities; and the total dedication to the school and students of the faculty and staff.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A 2016 NATIONAL BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL?

CHRISTINA BAULCH (CCH TEACHER SINCE 2012)CovCath’s greatest strength is the strong sense of community. The students want to be here, they support one another, and they respect the faculty. Similarly, the teachers want to be here—they love what they do and they have passion for educating young people. That “buy in” from all constituents creates an atmosphere that makes achieving academic excellence much easier. When you feel you belong, when you feel you are valued, then you’re willing to push yourself (and each other) more.

TIM HADERS (CCH FINE ARTS DEPARTMENT CHAIR AND TEACHER SINCE 1984)As a member of our faculty for three decades, I can proudly say Covington Catholic has always been a leader in secondary education in Northern Kentucky. We have been driven to provide our students with the finest opportunity to grow as a whole person. The Blue Ribbon award validates our efforts to always improve, to never rest upon our previous successes and to value the future demands on our current students. The Covington Catholic culture of academic excellence, Christian conduct and social acceptance has continued to grow, evident by our improved curriculum, physical facility and social opportunities.

NATIONAL BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL STATISTICS:

• Fewer than 8,500 schools nationwide have received this award since it began 34 years ago.

• Only 279 public and 50 private schools nationwide received the award in 2016.

• CovCath was one of only two high schools in Kentucky to receive the 2016 award.

• With a previous award in 2007, CovCath is the ONLY high school in Kentucky to have received the award TWICE in the past decade.

CAROL RASP (CCH WORLD LANGUAGES DEPARTMENT CHAIR AND TEACHER SINCE 1993) Like the athlete who trains daily in anticipation of winning the coveted blue ribbon, Covington Catholic invests countless resources to provide each student with an award-winning education. The school’s strength is not only in a strong academic program, but the unique culture which fosters a close brotherhood between students and a special, lifelong relationship among alumni. An enthusiastic administration and a dedicated faculty, challenge students to grow in their faith and embrace personal and academic excellence. Many stakeholders contribute to the students’ success. The “Blue Ribbon” level of achievement is designated for those schools who perform at a superior level in every way and in unique manners. Comprehensive community service opportunities, mission trips, intramural and state-sanctioned sports, a grief support group, and a wide variety of clubs and classes engage students of varying personal interests and abilities. The end result is an environment which fosters the development of the whole student and energizes each student to be successful.

DID YOU KNOW about the ROLE the Colonel Boosters played in these school milestones and achievements?• Helped push the vision for the new school building in

2003, helped drive the required land acquisition and ultimately provided pivotal financial support of $800,000 to the project.

• Stepped up with $600,000 to construct/renovate the Schott Center to provide locker facilities, weight and training rooms, batting cages, coaches’ offices and public restrooms.

• Advocated for and provided the initial equipment investment funding (for mats) to help get the wrestling program established at CovCath.

• With its 2016 pledge of $750,000 to the current “Bright Minds…Bright Future” capital campaign, the Boosters have provided over $2.1 million (since 2004) to capital campaigns for facilities across campus.

DID YOU KNOW about these PROGRAMS led by the CCH Boosters?• Bingo: Held every Thursday evening, year-round,

except Thanksgiving and Holy Thursday, and consistently well attended by people from throughout the community, Bingo net proceeds are now $130K per year. The Boosters assumed leadership of Bingo in the mid-1990’s, growing the operation to its current success. Seven volunteers are needed each week; all current school families are asked to volunteer at least twice per year.

• Event Concessions: The Boosters operate the concession stands during football, soccer and basketball games. Proceeds exceed $20K per year.

• Golf Outing: The Friday before Labor Day marks the Jerry Collins Memorial (Alumni) golf outing, approaching its 35th year in 2017. Net Proceeds are ~$40K per year.

• Back the Blue (formerly Dinner Dance): All Colonel fans are invited to this fun evening held typically on the 3rd Saturday in November, focused on socializing and FUNd-raising to benefit CCH. Net Proceeds in recent years have been earmarked for the STEM and Robotics programs, and have exceeded $60K per year.

• Colonel Stag (formerly Sports Fest): This traditional Stag is for the men in the Colonel Community to enjoy a “guy’s night out.” Colonel Stag features craft and domestic beers, bourbon, heavy appetizers, cigars, a Texas Hold’em Tournament and a Night at the Races — something for everyone.

• Hall of Fame: Originally part of the stag event, this event is now a special dinner held in late January to honor alumni athletes, Colonel coaches, and other contributors to CCH athletic programs.

• Colonel Cookout: This potluck dinner welcomes Colo-nel families new and old after the back to school parent orientation in August.

Importantly to note, the Boosters do not involve themselves in the administration or operation of the CCH athletic programs.

CCH BOOSTERS

Who are the members of the Boosters?• All parents and friends of Covington Catholic are mem-

bers and are encouraged to get involved with Boosters activities (no dues; just participate!). Meet other CCH fans, serve the school, have fun!

• The 2016-17 Executive Board Includes: Chris Edging-ton (President); Rob Bayer (President-Elect); Sheila Roedig (Secretary); Todd Best (Treasurer).

Chris Edgington explains his view of the CCH Boosters: “The Boosters are primarily a fund raising organization that, along with weekly Bingo and ongoing event conces-sions, has multiple other big annual events. One of those

that is near and dear to me is the Colonel Stag, as I help run this Colonel-oriented event. Think of the Colonel Stag as everything good about Kentucky: horse racing, basketball, and bourbon. It’s a fun night where there is no hounding folks to donate. We just have a great time with food, craft beer, cigars and maybe even some cards. I guarantee you there’s no better deal for $50 than our Colonel Stag. The Stag is open to all men of the Colonel Community and will be held March 11 in a huge tent right outside the gym. We need everyone’s help – as volunteers and/or as participants – to make this and other Booster events fun and successful.”

2016 Hall of Fame inductees

The NCAA defines “Boosters” as supporters “who donate time and financial resources to help student-athletes succeed on and off the playing field.” At CovCath, this broad benefit is especially true, with very significant contributions which have been fundamental to successful initiatives across the CCH campus and school community — from playing fields to classrooms.

Covington Catholic High School recently lost one of its most dedicated parents, fans, supporters and Boosters Association members, Roy Romes, on November 11, 2016. Roy was well-known for his dedication to the Bingo at CCH. In 1995, the CCH Boosters officially re-started Bingo with the understanding that “all pertinent information would be monitored by Roy Romes.” With Roy’s leadership, the income generated by Bingo has touched every aspect of CCH and resulted in the Boosters being the biggest combined contributors to the school and the two capital campaigns. For his longtime service to the Boosters’ Executive Board, Roy was given the title, Honorary Member. Roy also worked virtually every basketball and football game either in the concession stand, or at the admission gate. In honor of Roy’s commitment to the school, a concession stand at Wooten Field is named The Roy Romes Concession Stand.

Principal Bob Rowe shared his thoughts about Roy, “Roy’s dedication to Covington Catholic was unprecedented and the impact his work has had on the school is immeasur-

able.” Mike Guidugli, who worked many years with Roy added, “I cannot think of anyone else who has given more time to CCH than Roy, and I know there is no one who cared more about the school.”

Roy proudly served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. After the War, he opened Roy’s Meat in Covington with his father. He was a longtime member of Saint Agnes Church. Roy and his wife Pat established the Pat and Roy Romes Endowed Scholarship Fund at CCH. Memorials may be made to the Romes Scholarship at Covcath.org/GIVE.

The award was presented by Boone County Business Support & Community Relations Coordinator and CCH Colonel Chris Courtney (’99).

Freshman Yifei Li (“Tony”) is part of the 1 in 3 Colonels who come from outside our “district” par-ish schools. Tony is from China, but spent last year at a Military School in Indiana. At CCH, he has already joined the Corps of Cadets and has participated in the color guard several times. He is looking forward to playing tennis as well.

Juniors Andrew Belton, Tyler MacKnight, and Owen Pi-att were selected for the 2017 Regional Youth Leadership program. Over this school year, they will interact with a wide array of community leaders and decision makers to learn more about our region within a diverse class of young leaders from across the NKY/Cincinnati area.

Junior Nathan Weber (second from right in photo), a win-ner in the Kentucky Speedway’s Racing to Excellence STEM Essay contest, got to participate with the pit crew of Travis Kvapil, driver of the #50 Make Motorsports entry. The team’s race strategist and engineer as well as the driver provided insights on how STEM-focused racing really is!

COVINGTON CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL ANNOUNCES NATIONAL MERIT SEMI-FINALIST & COMMENDED STUDENT

Senior Aidan Donaghy has been recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation as a Semi Finalist and senior Mark Briede has been named a Commended Student in the 62nd annual National Merit® Scholarship Program.

Last fall, roughly 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools across the country entered the 2017 program by taking the PSAT/NMSQT Qualifying Test. Of those juniors, only 16,000, less than 1%, are named National Merit Semifinalists, based on their scores on this exam. These academically talented students are now eligible to seek Finalist standing, moving one step further in the competition for some 7,500 scholarships worth about $33 million that will be offered in the spring of 2017. Nationwide, about half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar® title. An additional 34,000 high performers on the PSAT exam are named Commended Students.

Aidan Donaghy is the son of Barri and Betsy Donaghy. He attended Blessed Sacrament parish grade school. Mark Briede is the son of Steve and Meredith Briede. He attended St. Joseph’s parish grade school (Crescent Springs).

Three Covington Catholic seniors (Kyle Crail, Aidan Donaghy, and Marcus Maier) have been selected to partici-pate in the inaugural Northern Kentucky Lawyers NaviGo Scholars program.

Selected Scholars will regularly meet with and receive coaching from a NaviGo Coach and local attorneys. This program is sponsored by Inn of the Courts, administered through the Northern Kentucky Education Council and services are provided by NaviGo, College and Career Prep Services, Inc. Selected Scholars will have the opportunity to work with dedicated legal professionals representing numerous areas of practice (corporate counsel, personal injury and class action litigation, prosecuting attorney, criminal defense attorney, family law counsel, professors and Judges) and will be assisted and guided by a NaviGo Coach.

Covington Catholic High School was one of six schools se-lected to invite students to be part of the inaugural group, partially based on the success of the school’s first Mock Trial team in 2015-16.

34 STUDENTS NAMED AP SCHOLARSThirty-four Covington Catholic students were recognized by the College Board as AP Scholars for 2016:

Covington Catholic offers 13 Advanced Placement courses. 104 students sat for 165 AP exams this past May, with 85 percent of all students earning a 3 or better on their exams (compared with 52 percent in Kentucky and 60 percent globally). 100% of students in AP English Language and Composition, English Literature and Composition, Envi-ronmental Science, European History, Human Geography, and Macroeconomics earned at least a 3 on the 2016 AP tests. Students scored 60+% higher than the state of Ken-tucky average on the Calculus and English Language and Composition exams, among similar strong results on other subjects. For most AP students at CovCath, those scores

translate directly into college credit and/or placement into higher level courses in the respective subject.

Anthony Zechella, Assistant Principal, Dean of Academics, noted, “The AP Scholar designation is a tremendous honor for the recipients, their families, and their teachers. Our AP program is very rigorous. Success in any of these subjects requires a great deal of dedication and diligence by all members of our learning community. The success of our students in the AP program is further evidence of Coving-ton Catholic’s commitment to educational excellence.”

Mr. Stephen Snyder is the moderator for a “new” CCH Club, Outdoor Pursuits. About 30 students have signed up for activities that may include day hikes, rock climbing, backpacking, nature study, and wilderness survival skills. Mr. Snyder led this club at CCH previously in 2004-05, when club members partici-pated on a day hike at Yellow Springs, learned to boulder and rock climb at a rock gym in Cincinnati and at the Eden Park wall, and went backpacking at the Red River Gorge. Healthy competition and dinner was enjoyed by over 400 fathers and sons at the Parents Club annual Father-Son Afternoon.

Upon the canonization of Mother Teresa this year, many remember her presence at Covington Catholic High School in 1982, when she stopped here en route to visit her sisters’ mission in the Appalachian town of Jenkins, Kentucky. According to Paul Tenkotte of the NKY Tribune (Sept. 5, 2016), Kentucky Post reporter Gary Webb quoted Mother Teresa in 1982 following her visit: “God ‘always chooses the small and helpless to show his love for us. Love God and serve him in the distressing disguises of the poor.’ ” (Kentucky Post, June 21, 1982)

ATHLETICS

FALL SPORTS RECAPS

Cross Country The 2016 season was another strong one for the CCH cross-country team. Senior Zack Hemsath and juniors Owen Piatt, Nick Eten, and Will Akin emerged as some of the top runners in the Northern Kentucky area. Senior Logan Franxman, juniors Jack Dunham and Calvin Scheper, and sophomores Michael Kessans, Will Tate and Casey Wolnitzek were also part of the varsity postseason team. The team notched a number of impressive finishes at regu-lar season meets winning the Scott Classic, the Diocese of Covington Championship, the Lexington Tates Creek Invitational, and the Cave Lake Fall Classic. The Colonels also finished as NKAC and Regional Runner-Up. Owen Piatt was the individual Regional Runner-Up. The team ran their most impressive race at the State meet, finishing 6th in the 3A State Championship and ending the season as the top Northern Kentucky team. With 8 of the top 10 runners returning next season, the future of CCH cross-country is bright!

ATHLETICS

FootballIn just his second season, head football coach Eddie Eviston earned his first signature win that would propel the Colo-nels back to a winning tradition. The Colonels upset Ohio powerhouse Sycamore High School 34-33 in the 3rd game of the season. Not only was it a big win, but it was the start of something bigger, “Friday Night Lights”. This game fea-tured the first Colonel night game since 2009. After strug-gling the past few seasons, the football team has attracted much excitement around their program by playing under the lights and by winning. The Colonels finished the season as district champions, last achieved in 2006. Unfortunately, the season ended on a tough game against Louisville Fern Creek in the Regional Championship, falling 35-28. The Colonels ended the season with a 9-4 record. With many skill players in the junior class returning, the Colonels have high expectations of a successful 2017 season.

SoccerAfter graduating 18 seniors and winning the school’s first ever Soccer State Championship in 2015, it was thought by many that 2016 would be a rebuilding year. Despite the doubters, the 2016 squad put together an impressive run leading them back to the state championship game where they fell to #1 Daviess County 6-5 in penalty kicks. The 2016 team made its mark as a defensive force led by senior defender Michael Vogt. The Colonels recorded a school record 17 shutouts and only allowed 2 goals during post season play. Senior Griffin Lamb led the team in scoring while setting a school record for goals in a season with 32. Vogt and Lamb were both named to the 1st team All-State with senior Stephen Schutt on the 2nd team All-State.

GolfThe golf team completed a successful season in 2016. The team was led by senior Griffin Flesh who will continue his golf career at Xavier University next fall. The other varsity members were seniors Neal Schroer, Jared Reid, and Chad Crowe, juniors Tyler Chandler, Paul Thelen, Josh Struck, and sophomore Patrick Kennedy. The season was highlighted by a second place finish in the NKAC conference tournament, and first place finishes in four different tournaments including the 9th Region. The team ended the season with a 7th place finish in the state tournament. With four golfers returning from the regional championship team, the 2017 golf team will be looking for its young talent to step up to repeat as regional champions.

HALL OF FAMEThe 36th Annual Covington Catholic Sports Hall of Fame Ceremony will take place on Wednesday January 25, 2017 at 6pm at The Gardens. This year’s Master of Ceremonies will be Joe Danneman, Class of 1998 and Sports Anchor of Fox 19. The 2016-2017 Honorees will be announced in early December.

EXCERPTED FROM WKUSPORTS.COM ON 11-1-2016:WKU Senior Max Halpin (CCH 2012) received national attention as a nominee for the Burlsworth Trophy, given to the most outstanding collegiate football player who began his career as a walk-on and has shown outstanding performance on the field.

After joining the WKU Football program as a preferred walk-on in 2012, Halpin redshirted his first season on The Hill and earned a scholarship in the Spring of 2013. Over the past four years, he has played in 38 games with 33 starts. In those 38 games, WKU has averaged 504 yards of offense. Since returning from a back injury at the beginning of the 2015 season, Halpin has made 23 consecutive starts as the anchor of one of the most effective offensive lines in the country.

The Burlsworth Award will trim its list of 52 down to three for the 2016 ceremony on Dec. 5.

ADVANCEMENT

Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends, As the calendar year-end quickly approaches, the faculty, staff and students of Covington Catholic High School wish to thank everyone who has supported CCH. The gifts of time, talent and treasure from the CovCath community, combined with faculty and staff committed to providing a second-to-none academic experience deeply rooted in our Catholic faith, is truly what continues to strengthen the school and make Covington Catholic unique.

At this time of year, many of you will make important decisions about your charitable giving. As you know, Catholic schools rely primarily on tuition and donations from caring individuals like you to fulfill their mission. Covington Catholic High School is no exception. Highlighted on the following pages are some ways you can help our students and the school. Please take a few minutes to read through and consider these options.

As God guides you in your year-end charitable giving decisions, we hope you will be led to support Catholic education at Covington Catholic High School. Please feel free to call me directly at (859) 448-2269 with questions or for assistance with a gift.

On behalf of the CCH Advancement team, we wish you and your family a blessed Christmas and a peaceful, productive New Year.

God’s blessings,

Gifts to the Bright Minds, Bright Future Capital Campaign will help us achieve our goal for Phase II. Phase II projects in-clude renovations to the existing gym and construction of an auxiliary gym that will benefit all students, alumni, and the CovCath community. Year-end is a great time to make your campaign donation or add to an existing campaign gift.

1. Annual Appeal gifts support the fi-nancial assistance program to help one in six CovCath students bridge the gap between what their families can afford to pay and tuition costs.

2. Your gift helps alleviate budget shortfalls by allowing the school to utilize funds that would otherwise be earmarked for tuition assistance, for important purposes such as teach-ing and learning enhancements.

3. Students receiving tuition assis-tance participate in the Work Study Program, helping with school tasks. The Work Study Program would not be possible without the Annual Appeal.

The Annual Appeal is vital to our students and school for a number of reasons:

Make your Annual Appeal Gift

Give to the Capital Campaign

Create an Endowed ScholarshipEndowments are special gifts, made in your name or in honor or memory of someone. A minimum $10,000 gift or pledge is required and can be fulfilled over a period of up to five years. Once the fund reaches $10,000, and interest is ac-crued over a period of one year, five percent of the interest is awarded as a scholarship to a deserving student. Endowed scholarships are a great investment in the future of individual students, and will help sustain Catholic education at Covington Catholic in perpetuity.

Leave a LegacyIncluding Covington Catholic in your will is a wonderful way to leave your legacy, while providing support for future generations of students. Please contact Director of Advancement Judy See at 859-448-2247 or email at [email protected] for more information.

Consider a Qualified Charitable DistributionIf you have reached the age of 701/2, you may want to consider a Qualified Charitable Distribution (“QCD”) from your indi-vidual retirement account, which allows tax free treatment of IRA distributions, including required minimum distributions. Specifically, QCDs permit a donor to exclude from income yearly transfers up to $100,000 to a qualified charity. With a QCD, you must make your gift directly from your IRA to a qualified charity like Covington Catholic High School.

By excluding the IRA distribution from income, a QCD provides a tax benefit to both itemizers and non-itemizers. For ex-ample, a QCD could help prevent the Alternative Minimum Tax and an increase in Medicare premiums, as well as reduc-ing the amount of Social Security benefits subject to tax. For more information, contact your tax advisor or call Director of Advancement Judy See at 859-448-2247 or email [email protected].

In recent years, several of our donors were able to benefit from QCDs, while providing much needed support to Covington Catholic High School.

Giving is Easy Simply use the reply envelope included with this issue of Journal, give online at CovCath.org, or call the Advancement Office at 859-448-2247.

WAYS YOU CAN HELP COVINGTON CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL BEFORE DECEMBER 31

Recurring GivingWhether you are a seasoned donor or a young alumnus, recurring giving may be right for you. Recurring giving is an easy, automatic way to support CovCath. For example, if you typically make a $1,200 pledge to the annual appeal, you can set up a monthly recurring gift of $100, eliminating pledge reminders. Likewise, a young alumnus on a limited budget might wish to set up a monthly recurring gift of $10, bringing their annual gift to $120. You can set up a monthly recur-ring gift by going to covcath.org/annualappeal and selecting the ‘Donate Now’ button or simply use the enclosed enve-lope. CovCath will automatically deduct your monthly gifts from the account you provide. You can stop or adjust your monthly gift anytime by contacting the CCH Advancement Office at 859-448-2247.

Bright Minds, Bright Future Capital Campaign Timeline

Campaign Update On June 30, 2016, Covington Catholic High School Reached the Phase I Goal for the Bright Minds, Bright Future Capital Campaign. This past Spring, the CovCath community was challenged to join generous donors who had already pledged their support and help us finish our Phase I goal by June 30. You enthusiastically responded. We are grateful for everyone who made reaching this goal possible. Covington Catholic has enjoyed a long history of developing caring and committed graduates who lead in their communities and help make this region such a great place to live and work. No doubt, that history will continue well into the future and this investment will be felt for many years to come in the lives of the people it will touch. The capital campaign will have a second donation phase. During Phase II, additional donations will be sought for renovations of the existing gymnasium and the construction of a new multipurpose gymnasium. The multipurpose gym is a much needed space that will service all our students. It will be used for gym classes, intramural sports activities (in which approximately 400 students participate), indoor practice space for all sports teams, alumni activities, bingo and more.

ENDOWMENTSMATTH. TOEBBEN ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP ESTABLISHED

Following the October 6th All-School Liturgy, we were thrilled to announce the Matth. Toebben Scholarship Fund. Mr. Toebben was joined at the Mass by his sons, John ’77, Bill ’81, and son-in-law Scott Marx ’78. Mr. Toebben has donated more than $100,000 to the fund.

Mr. Toebben has been a long-time friend and supporter of CovCath. In 1977, he was a member of the SCORE commit-tee. This group of businessmen was committed to helping the school obtain land for a much needed playing field for soccer, track and football. Mr. Toebben was influential in securing this gift of land for the school. He also received the distinguished honor of being named the Northern Kentuckian of the Year in 2008. The proceeds from that event supported the tuition assistance program. We were very grateful when, in April of 2015, he decided to further support our tuition assistance program by establishing the Matth. Toebben Scholarship Fund.

Mr. Toebben spoke to the students, faculty and staff after the Mass. His remarks were touching as he spoke of his time in Germany as a young Catholic school boy. He

Sue and Mike Finke, together with their sons and their wives – Michael & Kristin and Matthew & Kerri – have established the Finke Family Endowed Scholarship. Mike was a CCH graduate in the Class of 1979, Michael Jr., Class of 1998 and Matthew, Class of 2002. Sue served as Coving-ton Catholic Director of Advancement and Bright Minds, Bright Future Capital Campaign Director for more than 10 years. As part of her role, Sue championed the need for endowed scholarships at CCH, which provide an enduring source of funding for our tuition assistance program.

In 2006, Mr. Denny Doyle challenged Sue to establish eight scholarships, offering to match what was raised through the Dennis M. and Lois A. Doyle Family Foundation. This effort, along with the matching gift, resulted in nearly $400,000 in endowed scholarships. It was very fitting that the Doyle Foundation’s last matching gift was to the Finke Family Scholarship. With the Doyle Family Foundation match, the Finke Family Scholarship Fund will exceed $60,000.

The Finke family, along with Mr. Doyle were honored at the All-School Liturgy on September 27. Matthew Finke

emphasized to the students that their Catholic education should not be taken for granted and encouraged them to work hard to achieve their goals.

We are extremely grateful to Mr. Toebben for this gener-ous gift that will support many Colonels for years to come.

FINKE FAMILY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP ESTABLISHED

spoke to the student body, faculty and staff about the scholarship and encouraged students to thank their par-ents for their Catholic education, thank their teachers, and to aspire to be leaders.

ALUMNI ALUMNI

Dear Alumni,

It is with great pleasure that I introduce myself as your new Alumni Relations Director. Along with this position, I have the privilege of teaching religion. In addition to educating our CovCath juniors about the Catholic faith, I am able to cultivate a relationship with our future Colonel alumni.

It has been evident to me from my first day in the classroom that even though the names and faces of the students may change each year, the same principles, values, and ideals remain. Whether it be the determination and wit that Colonels show in the classroom, or the strength and will to fight on and off the athletic fields; the true spirit of Covington Catholic has remained the same since our first graduating class in 1925.

I would like to personally thank my predecessor, Richard Dickmann, for all he has done in his time serving Covington Catholic High School. Richard got the Alumni Affairs program off the ground, and never looked back. I and more than eight thousand alumni owe Richard a debt of gratitude for his dedication. Following in his footsteps, I want to assure our alumni that I look forward to continuing the work that Richard has started. He will continue to serve as my mentor as I grow in this position. I am very thankful to have his help. My primary purpose as Alumni Relations Director is to bring our alumni back to campus to experience first-hand the growth and development of this community. Richard and I will continue to work together to make that happen.

As we look towards the future, there is a palpable buzz around the campus regarding the construction and stadium renovations. I look forward to seeing our alumni back on campus for Friday night football games and class reunions. I look forward to seeing the support from our alumni in all facets in which this great institution continues to excel. Finally, I look forward to seeing what else the future of Covington Catholic may hold.

GO COLONELS!

As a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Special Forces (a “Green Beret”), Scott White is trained to be mission driven in everything he does. Adversity, he says, is “just a step on the journey” to the goal.

He was singularly compelled to become a Green Beret after seeing the John Wayne movie as a kid. Once on that path, he never wavered, and never pursued an alternate course of action. He attended The Citadel post CovCath, the only college to which he applied. Those who succeeded in the Special Forces training, he said, had to have mental fortitude to overcome the intense physical challenges. In active duty during several deployments to Afghanistan, Iraq, and Kosovo, he said he did what he had to do to fulfill the mission and to protect the soldier on his left, and the one on his right.

This toughness was never more challenged than when he was in Afghanistan, hunting the Taliban with Afghan soldiers, and received a call that

his daughter, Grace, had been diagnosed with DIPG pediatric brain cancer. After an urgent trip home facilitated by Afghan pilots on Russian helicopters, he led his family in Grace’s fight with a similar warrior mentality. With God, Family and Country as their declared priorities, and with a belief that asking “Why?” is “a recipe for bitterness,” the White family made it their mission to courageously and joyfully live every experience together as long as Grace was able.

Scott sees today that the CovCath brotherhood is forged through that same mission focus – a sense of common purpose, where brothers help each other through adversity and toward success, as “iron sharpens iron.”

We hope you enjoyed the recent “My Path” publication which featured the remark-able and varied professional and personal paths of seven Covington Catholic alumni from past decades, as well as a look at six graduates from 2016 as they embark on paths which took shape during their years at CovCath.

REUNION NEWSCLASS OF 1956 – On Saturday September 10, 2016 the Class of 1956 celebrated their 60th anniversary. Twenty five

members of the class and seventeen spouses met for dinner at Ft. Mitchell Country Club. Dave Thelen said grace before dinner and Jim Quinn read a congratulatory note from Bro. Jim Leahy S.M. Bro. Jim best known to us as “JL”, our math and science teacher, was unable to attend. This was the first time he missed a reunion. For the record there were 72 of us that graduated in 1956 of which 21 are deceased.

CLASS OF 1961 – Our 55th anniversary of graduation from CCH was the 18th Class Reunion. The class celebrated on

Sunday, September 18 in the Griffin Centre Alumni Hall. The event was chaired by Jerry Biedenharn and Rich Detzel. The 55th reunion was attended by 32 classmates plus wives of deceased classmates — Judy Shields, Cathy Guenther and Jeanne Moellering. Of the 120 that graduated in 1961, 32 are now deceased, three since the last reunion five years ago. Several classmates that were in attendance served in Vietnam during the Vietnam War. It is truly an honor to have them and these guys never miss a reunion. Chair Jerry Biedenharn says: “I believe that the Class of 1961 is a perfect example of our Motto “With a Spirit that Will Not Die.” One thing for sure, we might be a little older but we are still full of Spunk!”

CLASS OF 1966 – The 50th Reunion was celebrated on September 16, 2016. The day started with a Skins Game at the

Boone Links Golf Course. Skins were won by Dave Koester, George Scheper and Mick Burke. At 4:00pm, there was a social hour in the Griffin Centre followed by a nice dinner catered by Chef Barone. Bob Rowe, Principal of CovCath, gave a talk about the many school programs and about the status of the current capital campaign. Sue Finke led the group of approximately 40 alumni on a tour of the school. After a short rain delay, we all settled in to watch the CovCath varsity football team beat Beechwood 44 to 10. At half-time, the group assembled on the field for acknowledgement of our 50-year reunion.

CLASS OF 1976 – The 40th Reunion was held on November 5th, 2016, at Pee Wee’s - Back Room. The organizer was Bob “Harpo” Morris.

CLASS OF 1981 – The members of the Class of 1981 came back to the CCH campus on September 9th to celebrate

their 35th class reunion and attend the CCH football game vs Lexington Catholic. The group was recognized at halftime, and cheered the Colonels on to victory before heading to the Alumni Center to end their night. A great time was had by all in attendance, and a big thank you to reunion chair Ken Heidrich for organizing the event.

IN MEMORIAMCLASS OF 1986 – The Class of 1986 met at Perry Park the weekend of September 23rd. The class enjoyed three days of golf and the Bourbon Trail. Evening activities included a wonderful meal, card playing, and of course, reminiscing about our school days, teachers and sports! The long weekend allowed classmates to join us for a day or the entire weekend. Fun was had by all and we really enjoyed seeing each other again, especially those from out of town. A few tall tales were shared and a few jokes about the guys having to pull out their readers to write down their scores! In the end, we all agreed how fortunate we are to be Colonels and to have attended Covington Catholic High School. A special thanks to the organizers: Chris Berling, Chris Nordloh, Dave Schroeder and Rob Tenhundfeld.

CLASS OF 1991 – The Class of 1991 held its 25-year reunion on Friday, September 30 and Saturday, October 1. Friday’s festivities featured a couples event at PeeWee’s Place in Crescent Springs. Thirty “91ers”, most with significant others, were able to join for some good food, fun and fellowship. Thanks to Pee Wee and team for a wonderful evening! On Saturday, twenty members of the class met at Devou Golf Course for a spirited round of golf, sharing more memories, tall tales, and questionable golf scores. Between Friday and Saturday, thirty-four Colonels were able to gather, have a great time, and be reminded of the special bond created during our time at Covington Catholic.

CLASS OF 1996 – The 20-year reunion for the ’96 Colonels was held at Keystone in Covington on Saturday, October 15th.

The 40 Colonels in attendance reminisced about two football state championships, Super Hike, chicken patty lunches, & the nicknames Krumps gave us during sophomore year Biology. Colonels Forever! #WithASpiritThatWillNotDie

CLASS OF 2001 – The Class of 2001 reunion was an epic night. Within the first 30 minutes, the fight song was echoing

inside the Saddle Club walls. It was great seeing the Colonels take care of business on the football field and even better to sing the fight song again with the Colonel Crazies at halftime. The night was concluded at PeeWee’s, where the planning for the next reunion began.

Ms. Lynne (Lindy) Blankenbuehler, age 73, left her mark on Covington Catholic High School. Her email and twitter accounts’ name, mombcch, just about sums up her effect on many of the students at CCH. After retiring from the Ohio schools, Ms. B, as her students lovingly referred to her, came across the bridge to CCH in 1994 to teach senior English. She served as the English Dept. Chairperson, Head Swim Coach, Assistant Tennis Coach, and Drama Co-Director with NDA. She was recognized as Coach of the Year for swim-ming by the Cincinnati Enquirer for 6 years and Region 4 Coach of the Year in her last year as Head Coach. She retired from CCH in 2007, but returned for a short stint to help fill a void from 2009-10. She loved CCH like any true-blooded Colonel and always kept up with the progress of the graduates. She gave 110% in the classroom, on the sports field, and with her students. If you ask any one of the graduate Colonels who had Ms. B in class, they will all tell you the same thing: She was like our second mom, and we loved her dearly. We will all miss her sorely around the halls of Covington Catholic High School.
