    258-198, to capture the $42,000

    first prize and a PBA

    Barrett advanced to the title

    match by defeating last weeks

    Abu Dhabi WBT winner,

    Thomas Larsen of Denmark,

    459-438, while Olsson elimi-

    nated Robert Morris

I kept moving around and trying to make the ball hook, and eventu-

ally I got back to where I started and made some good shots, Barnes

said. It was kind of what youd see (Hall of Famers) Walter Ray(Williams Jr.) or Norm (Duke) do pick a spot and keep hitting that

spot, and make the other guy show up.

I dont even see the oil when Im bowling; I didnt even notice it was

there, Ciminelli said, but Barnes noted with a grin, The funniest thing

was, when I threw my spare ball, it disappeared (his spare ball is light

blue, almost the same shade as the oil).

On one of these (blue oil) shows, if all of the guys play in the same

area of the lane, I think well see much better how the condition will get

lighter, Barnes added, but this show was like the U.S. Open. One guy

was playing first arrow, another was playing fourth arrow, one playing

the 12 board, so it was hard to see (the movement of oil).

Im not sure what well learn from it, but I dont have a problem with

it at all, he added. It doesnt really create any kind of advantage for

what we do because were still going to rely on what we know. We dont

know enough about (the blue oil) to trust our eyes over our feel for the

    lanes.

The Viper telecast also included a segment called Time to Strike, thesecond of four special PBA League Challenge segments in which the

eight PBA League franchise players are demonstrating their skills in

unique competitions. In the second round, players tried to throw as many

strikes as possible within a span of 90 seconds.

Speed bowling is not for me, said 51-year-old Hall of Famer Pete

Weber, franchise player for the New York City WTT KingPins, who

threw two strikes. Go back 30 years, maybe

I thought I was going to rule that one, the Dallas Strikers Duke

noted, but I ended up dead last with no strikes. I could hear Chris

Berman in the background saying, Come on, man!

I did really well in the speed challenge, said Philadelphia Hitmen

representative Bill ONeill, who won the competition in a two-shot roll-

off against L.A. X franchise player Jason Belmonte after each had

thrown five strikes in the 90-second round. Apparently thats how I

need to bowl from now on. When I pick my ball up and think for a sec-

ond, things go haywire, so Ive got to just get up and run to the line.

    4 SPORTS REPORTER December 25 - 31, 2013

The words spoken in the song from the Rocky

Horror Picture Show remind me of the experience I

am having with bowling. Yes, bowling.Let me explain. This past May, I moved from the

United States to Brasil, but a little more on that later.

I havent bowled much in the past two years. While

I was preparing myself for the move, I was trying to

save as much money as possible since moving to

another country takes time and a lot of money more

than I thought it would have. Another reason was that

I was tired. Tired of all the burocracy involved in the

sport, in leagues and the complaints that always seem

to be around conditions and the ways things are run.

I have just resigned as Association Manager of a

local USBC association and tried to stay away from

the game I loved as much as possible. For someone

who bowled every week since he was 18 years old,

you would think it wouldnt be easy. Wrong. It was

    actually refreshing.

Whenever I would go bowling, and it wasnt much,I could actually go as a bowler and not an official. It

felt good telling people to see someone else for

    advice.

With my 25th USBC Championships coming in

March 2013, I thought I should at least practice a lit-

tle so I wouldnt be too rusty.

Well, I bowled 5 games before going to Reno. To

my surprise, I bowled my best 9 game series in 5

years. What does that tell you about where the game

of bowling is today? I know it wasnt because I am a

    good bowler.

In my new home, which is the city of Anpolis

Goias, Brasil, there is only one bowling center. That is

one bowling center for 324,000 people (as of 2012

census). It is in a small mall, and it has 8 lanes. What

shocked me, is that the pins are picked up with strings.

Yes, strings. It reminds me of marionettes. It takesgetting used to, but it does function most times. It is

funny when the strings get tangled and it takes a few

times of lifting the pins up to get untangled. The pins

also sound artificial like the Twister pins.

When I see the strings it reminds me in ways of

bowling in the USA in the 50s ball boys. Why? It

just doesnt seem modern. The center is all comput-

erized, but it also has the feel of bowling in the 21st

century. It is geared as an Entertainment Center.

There are TV monitors on every lane, there is blue

lighting and looks like midnight bowling especially

    at night.

The pricing structure is not what I am used to either.

I have visited 3 centers so far in Brasil. One in

Anpolis, Goias, one in Brasilia, Federal District and

one in Porto Seguro, Bahia. Everyone has only one

price structure by the hour rentals of the lane.

What you dont see in these centers is by-the-game

pricing. To me the way to keep the sport going on for

ages and I have not seen it is competitive bowling.

There arent any leagues (at least in these centers),

there arent any people practicing to get better. There

    is only the Bowlmor-AMF mentality. A play-time

atmosphere.Well, the traditional side of my upbringing, is start-

ing to get my juices flowing again.

I am looking to set up an American tradition bowl-

ing atmosphere by trying set up a league structure in

the center when there is availability. It wont be an

    easy task.

Eu no falo Portuguese. I do not speak Portuguese.

It is not an easy language to learn either. I am cur-

rently in Kumon classes and using the Rosetta Stone

    program.

I have already had a meeting with the center propri-

etor, who also happens to be the Vice Mayor of the

City of Anpolis. It went well, I think.

I presented three fliers one for a junior league, one

for an adult league and one for seniors. Along with

those fliers I presented a financial breakdown of how

much money the proprietor can make in a 10 weekprogram.

After that meeting I made a PowerPoint presenta-

tion, in Portuguese of course, that demonstrates two of

the most important rules of bowling (not to cross foul

line and the most important one How to keep score).

A video of it appears at:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=weDQbwUWR2E.It also shows how bowling is helpful to their health.

In a country where soccer is king, I hope to make the

sport of kingpins popular like it is in the United States

at least in a competitive way. Who knows, maybe I

can help develop the next two-sport champion, like

Walter Ray Williams is with bowling and horseshoes.

Instead of horseshoes and bowling, it would be soccer

    and boliche (bowling).

The area of Anpolis can use more bowling centers.

It is an area where the sport can grow. Who knows, maybe an American company would like to expand

    around the world.

After six months, I still have lots to get used to.

First off, it is 2 weeks before Christmas and it is 85

degrees! My body says whats wrong with the weath-

er. Second, I am still not fluent in Portuguese. Lastly,

I would do it all over again, because I have a wonder-

    ful family.

My wife and daughter are my life, and I hope to

bring some of my past life into their future.

My time warp life is beginning. In some ways I feel

like the founding fathers of ABC in 1895 or maybe it

is like Marty McFly in Back to the Future.

Either way, bowling is coming back into my life.

This time, its going to be from the ground floor again.

    Scott Kampf Tops His Father

In LIGBT FinalsEAST MEADOW, NY: Scott Kampf, a 15-year old high school stu-

dent from Levittown, won his second LIGBT title at AMF East Meadow.

For Scott to win the $1,200 top prize he had to defeat his father Jack in

the final shootout. Both Kampfs bowled great with the son defeating his

dad 269-248 in a well bowled match.

The final shootout involved 5 bowlers who advanced to the last match

through 2 rounds of finals. Both Scott and Jack were spotting the other

3 shootout participants handicap so it was important they both got off to

a good start. After 6 frames both Kampfs had struck in every frame but

one. The only other finalist staying close was Ed Eng, Flushing, NY. Ed

would finish third, worth $300 with a 236. The other two shootout final-

ists, Paulo Martins, New York City (191), and Mack Oakman Jr.,

Wheatly Heights, NY (178) never got momentum and finished fourth

and fifth respectively earning $250 and $200.

The AMF East Meadow tournament drew a nice Thanksgiving Sunday

crowd of 97 entries and paid out $3,350. Kegels Winding Road pat-

tern (39 feet) was used and scoring was on the moderate to high side. The high series of the day was shot by our champion Scott with 770 in

the 2pm squad. The other two squad leaders were Ken Simpson, Shirley,

NY with a 758 at noon and Jack Kampf with a 763 at 4pm.
