St. Bonaventure in his Life of Saint Francis tells the tale: “It happened in the third year before his death, that in order to excite the inhabitants of Grecio to commemorate the nativity of the Infant Jesus with great devotion, [St. Francis] determined to keep it with all possible solemnity; and lest he should be accused of lightness or novelty, he asked and obtained the permission of the sovereign Pontiff. Then he prepared a manger, and brought hay, and an ox and an ass to the place appointed. The brethren were summoned, the people ran together, the forest resounded with their voices, and that venerable night was made glorious by many and brilliant lights and sonorous psalms of praise. The man of God [St. Francis] stood before the manger, full of devotion and piety, bathed in tears and radiant with joy; the Holy Gospel was chanted by Francis, the Levite of Christ. Then he preached to the people around the nativity of the poor King; and being unable to utter His name for the tenderness of His love, He called Him the Babe of Bethlehem.” The painting inset is The Holy Family with Saint Francis by Jacob van Oost the Elder, 1665. Many artists since the 12th century have depicted the Poverello with Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. Something about our newborn King nestled with the Mother of God and her husband, patron of fathers, resonates with artists and adorers in every age. May we find ourselves like St. Francis amidst the Holy Family of Nazareth on their feast day and throughout the coming year.

DECEMBER 30, 2018THE FEAST OF THE HOLY FAMILY

AMIDST THE HOLY FAMILY

Francis of Assisi is one of my favorite saints and always a welcome companion on the pilgrimage of faith, but especially during the Christmas season. The Little Poor Man (Il Poverello), as he was called, helps us to recall the poverty and simplicity of the Incarnate Christ in the manger. Devotion to the Christmas crib, or creche, dates back to Francis himself visiting the town of Grecio and proclaiming the joy of the Nativity.

St. Bonaventure in his Life of Saint Francis tells the tale:

“It happened in the third year before his death, that in order to excite the inhabitants of Grecio to commemorate the nativity of the Infant Jesus with great devotion, [St. Then he preached to the people around the nativity of the poor King; and being unable to utter His name for the tenderness of His love, He called Him the Babe of Bethlehem.”

The painting inset is The Holy Family with Saint Francis by Jacob van Oost the Elder, 1665.

Divine Healer, God of Wholeness, we place these parishioners in Your hands; we ask for healing, but also for acceptance of their illness and of Your holy plan. Help them and us to embrace whatever You have in mind for them. Support them in their anxieties, fears, pains, and the frustrations of their illness. Support them with the strength of the Holy Spirit. We ask this in the name of Jesus, compassionate healer of those in need of health and hope. Amen.

The Joyful Family

Mancini paints the realistic details that make this scene as ordinary

as any family playing with their child in a park. Mary has a bowl of water in her hand, perhaps ready to offer a drink to Jesus after he tastes the strawberry or to clean his stained fingers. A silver bowl of food for the baby rests on a white baby blanket. Perhaps it was just placed there by Joseph, for Jesus has finished his vegetables and now Dad offers dessert! A traveling basket sits in front of a water jug. These instruments show that they are a pilgrim family, and the Egyptian obelisk in the background indicates their destination.

The circumstances are precarious yet joyful, even playful, in their following of God’s path. This was just one of the trying times for the Holy Family, which would eventually include losing the Child Jesus in the temple. As their whole focus in this painting is on Jesus, imagine their fear when they can no longer find the heart of their family.

This is a fantastic image of the joys and challenges of family life. There is joy in having Jesus in our midst, and no sacrifice is too great when he is present. But when he is lost from the center, fears and anxieties enter.

The words of Colossians sum up this attitude, making one think that Paul had a good idea of what virtues family life require! Let’s work in our families to have Jesus at the center, and once he is there, to “put on” all the virtues that his presence inspires.

—Fr. Mark Haydu, LC

And Jesus advanced [in] wisdom and age and favor before God and man.Luke 2:52

For ReflectionDoes one of the virtues mentioned by St. Paul catch my attention?

Should I pray for and practice that virtue a little more?
