7 September 2010 No. 14 FROM THE PRINCIPAL : Dear Parents and Friends of Holy Cross, Boys need men in their lives. Our Western culture is starved of good men in the lives of boys. This is the result of many things. The disap- pearance of men into the factories and other workplaces at the dawn of the Industrial Age may have been the beginning of it. An ensuing vicious circle of diffidence and shyness of men around children due to their own lack of experiencing fathering may have entrenched it. Heightened concerns around Child Protection make men cautious about it. Yet despite all these negatives, we are on a better pathway in the twenty-first century to understanding the importance of men to boys. Occasions such as the Fathers Day mass and breakfast held last Friday at the College serve as powerful signals to our boys that we care about them, that we are interested in their lives, and that we value the sacred, understanding that the sacred can more richly embroider our lives. On Friday, our boys cannot have but received the message that we want them to grow into good men who care about others. To the many fathers, grandfathers and other mentors of boys who attended the mass last Friday, my heartfelt thanks for your support and commitment to boys. To other dads who could not be with their own sons that morning, we appreciate the re- alities of family and work and hope that you are able to join us on a future occasion. Leader of Pedagogy appointed to Holy Cross College. Leaders of Pedagogy have been appointed in all NPA (National Partnership Agreement) Sydney systemic schools. NPAs are a range of Agreements across a number of sectors (eg, Health, Education) forged by COAG, the Council of Australian Federal and State Governments. NPAs have released significant amounts of money to assist in the improvement of outcomes in se- lected sectors. The appointment of Leaders of Pedagogy is the lead strategy in the NPA between COAG and the Sydney Catholic Education Office. The intention of the Leaders of Pedagogy position is specifically to improve the quality of teaching and maximise student learning outcomes. This is in very strong alignment with our own College Strategic Priorities 2009-2011. While Leader of Pedagogy positions do not include a separate teaching load, the expectation is that Leaders of Pedagogy will be in class- rooms working with other teachers as their chief modus operandi; to model best classroom practice, to mentor and to coach. It is my pleasure to announce the appointment of Mrs Miriam Meaney as the new Leader of Pedagogy for Holy Cross College to commence at the beginning of the 2011 school year. A Kilkenny woman by birth, Miriam is currently Head of ICT P-12 at Kincoppal Rose Bay School of the Sacred Heart. A committed Catholic woman, she is an active member of the St Anthony's Clovelly parish. Miriam has a BEd and DipRE from the National University of Ireland and a GradDip Educational Studies from the University of Sydney. She also holds Masters degrees of MEd (Info Technology) and MA (eLearning) from Charles Sturt and UTS universities respectively. Her recent publication in the educational leadership journal Leadership in Focus entitled "The One to One Laptop Journey: Evolution not Revolution" gives some feel for Miriam's recent journey in education at Kincoppal. Miriam will also present two workshops at the forthcoming ULearn Education Conference in Christchurch which is highly regarded by our system of schools. The con- ference is going ahead despite the earthquake! Miriam will bring great enthusiasm and insight as she fulfils her role alongside teachers within classrooms and will be a most valuable and experienced addition to the School Lead- ership Team. In cruce salus Adam Taylor Principal Feast of the Holy Cross 9.30am Friday 17 September 2010 An invitation is extended to all parents and friends to join us for the Mass and presentation of awards at 9.30am. The theme of the Mass is “Behold the Cross” and in this spirit, it would be wonderful if you could join us. After this the students will have a shared lunch in their home- room followed by “Holy Cross Idol”. Students are to wear sports uniform. Students will be dismissed at 2.30pm on the day and are re- quired to bring a $2.00 donation for the Delany Foundation which will be collected in their morning homeroom. Please contact your son’s Year coordinator if supervision is required from 2.30pm to 3.15pm. Please also note that no school spe- cial buses will be provided for students at 2.30pm

On Sunday November 21st, the College will celebrate with a “Back to Holy Cross Day”. All ex-students and their families are invited back to the College on this

Sports Report MCS Golf This year Holy Cross College Ryde went to the MCS Golf Tournament with 6 Players. Ryan Bown (17s) Arran Mellino and Michael Kokkaris (16s) Kale Barton-Bissaker and Joshua Cameroux (15s) Nathan Skrivanic (14s). The boys repre-sented the school with great pride and produced some outstanding results. Ryan Bown finished iequal first for his age group and equal 2nd overall. Arran Mellino also finished 2nd for his age group. This week we have our 12s & 13s teams representing the school with 4 boys from year 7. Tayla McCabe, James Har-wood, Geoffrey Merchant and Robbie Campbell. Good luck to those students. AFL Our AFL teams continued on their winning way with solid wins over Dundas and Eastwood. Both teams were miss-ing a few players but their skill and determination maintained their dominance in the competition. We meet our arch rivals St.Gregory’s Campbelltown this week in the final round game. This should determine our Semi Final placings. Touch Football Our Touch Football teams also continued on their winning ways with wins in all age groups over Fairfield and Par-ramatta. All our teams especially our 13s team have really improved as the season moves towards the finals. All com-petitions are extremely close so every game is vital in the next few rounds. The boys come up against Dundas and Schofields this week so hopefully we will go for another clean sweep in all our age groups. Internal Sport Year 9 House sport has been going well this term. With the house competition coming to an end this week, vital points are up for the taking this Thursday. From other sports I hear that the boys are improving their fitness in the Circuit Training. We have a few new sports possibly available next term. Students should have selected their sport choices for Term 4. Once the boys are notified of their sport they will need to stay with this sport for the whole of the term. Some sports require payment for venues and equipment. If a student is in one of these sports he will be required to pay for the whole of the term so that we can guarantee that venue and his position. Lastly can I remind students that Thursday sport should not be used for Doctors appointments. Students are required to be at school for sport on Thursdays. Good luck to all in the coming weeks Mr.Whitty PDHPE Coordinator
