At Pine View, the grade 7/8 class are presenting two plays of classic stories about giving and Christmas, namely “The Gift of the Magi” and “A Christmas Carol”. At the same time, the students in other classes will present some traditional Christmas music. Both events are sure to be enjoyable for all of us as we reflect on the meaning for Christmas to us. As a staff, in lieu of gifts we would appreciate donations to local charities that help our neighbours who are less fortunate than ourselves. Donations, large or small, to organizations such as the Phoenix Centre, CPAN, Family and Children’s Services, OSPCA, United Way, Red Cross, are a great way to say thank you and help others. On behalf of the staff, we wish the merriest of Christmases and a happy beginning to a new year. Darlene Root LEGION POSTER AND LITERARY CONTEST WINNERS We have excellent news in our results from the Petawawa Legion’s Remembrance Day poster and literary contests. Principal’s Message Christmas is a time we share by giving and sharing memories with family. At Pine View, the grade 7/8

class are presenting two plays of classic stories about giving and Christmas, namely “The Gift of the

Magi” and “A Christmas Carol”. At the same time, the students in other classes will present some

traditional Christmas music. Both events are sure to be enjoyable for all of us as we reflect on the

meaning for Christmas to us.

As a staff, in lieu of gifts we would appreciate donations to local charities that help our neighbours who

are less fortunate than ourselves. Donations, large or small, to organizations such as the Phoenix Centre,

CPAN, Family and Children’s Services, OSPCA, United Way, Red Cross, are a great way to say thank

you and help others.

On behalf of the staff, we wish the merriest of Christmases and a happy beginning to a new year.

CLASSROOM NEWS

Mrs. McIver/Mrs. Guerard: In Kindergarten the Seniors have started to work on their first homework letter home to parents. It has been very hard work and has taken much longer than all of us expected but the students are learning a lot. The juniors have been busy exploring sight word bingo as well as letter and sound bingo. We have our aquarium up and running. As well our Christmas tree is up and we’re all enjoying doing festive activities. Ms. Loevenmark: Students are putting final touches on their animal projects. December’s focus is on family traditions and Canadian celebrations and festivals. In Math students are collecting data by surveying classmates, then tabulating their findings and putting the data onto graphs. Mrs. Vossos: The grade 3/4s in Mrs. Vossos' class have been learning about the ways Canada, and specifically Ontario use our natural resources. They have also been forming opinions and discussing how the use of these resources effect the environment. We have been lucky enough to be taking part in a special knowledge building forum with the help of a special guest Ms. Lacelle. Mrs. Bennett: As a class we have been linking parts of the dance and language curriculum together. With this in mind, we are discussing reasons why people dance and the various cultures who use dance to express feelings/emotions, stories, etc. Currently, students have been learning African Body Percussion and will be applying what they have learned in a group presentation. Mrs. Osmond: In Math we are learning to calculate the area and perimeter of regular and irregular polygons. In Language we are writing short Christmas skits. Mrs. Neigel: Grade 6/7 students are working on integrated language units linked to their science topics of Flight (6) and Heat and Temperature (7). Generating equations using Patterning and Algebra concepts is our current focus in Mathematics. Grade 6s are working on identifying variables in equations and 7s on application of pattern rules. We are reading a gripping novel called The Secret War by Jill Atkins. Mrs. Wasmund: The Grade 7 and 8 students are busy making Christmas Picture Books to be read to the rest of the classes in the school. In addition, we are performing two Christmas plays for Drama. Also, the students are purchasing some new clothes in Fletchville and buying Christmas presents for family and friends. They are certainly learning the cost of living, and they are finding things to be very expensive. Mr. Gorr & The Arts: Students in Mr. Gorr's Arts classes are, as you can probably guess, very busy with drama, mu-sic and arts and crafts projects for the holiday season. Some classes will be singing and playing instruments at the school sing-along and displays of Christmas art are going up now. Please check them out the next time you're in the school . Mme Bishop & FSL: The Grade 5/6 students have completed their weather project and will be working on Glogster for their presentation. Mrs. Reid-Stashick: It is a busy time in Grade 1/2, just like everywhere else in the school. We have been working hard on our Hot News (writing) and are trying to emphasize our message and then adding the illustrations. In Math, we continue to work on our addition facts and our estimating abilities. In fact yesterday’s total for seashells was 206. We use this material to create groups of ten (a friendly number) and calculate the totals together. We put on our Thinking Cats every morning in preparation for the day’s work. Life is good.

The Grade 8 girls travelled to Champlain to compete in the Volleyball Tournament on No-

vember 20th. They went 2 in 1 during the round robin game and placed second place in

their division. This matched the girls up with their cross town rivals Valour. The Lions battled

hard and ended up taking out Valour which sent them to the quarter finals against the High-

view Hawks. The Lions were down by 5 points but managed to pull through! This placed the

Lions into the semi-final game playing against another cross town team Herman Street. The

girls played a great game but unfortunately Herman Street ended up moving on to the finals.

Pine View played Rockwood for third place and although Rockwood won that game, Pine

View still placed 4th overall out of 16 teams! A very impressive outcome by the girls! A job

well done! You made Pine View proud! Team members were: Leanne, Keely, Tana, Taylor

J., Sam, Alyssa, Lilly, Olivia, Taylor H., and Maggie.

Anthony’s School. We won that game 25-8. This placed us in the playoffs against L’Equi-

This then matched us up with Our Lady of Lourdes. After a tight match Our Lady of Lourdes

ended up moving on to the next round. A job well done by the girls! You played great and

SCHOOL SUPPLIES Please keep in mind that by this time of the year your child’s supply of pencils, pens, erasers, glue sticks, markers, lined paper, rulers etc. is running low. Christmas is a great time to replenish these items.

CPAN SNOW SUIT DRIVE Pine View Public School will once again be a collection depot for your clean and gently used snowsuits, hats, mitts, gloves and snow boots. There is always a great need for all sizes, girls and boys as well as women and men. Your kindness is always appreciated!

MONCION RECEIPTS Remember to have your receipts that are $25.00 and more stamped at the Riverside and Petawawa Moncion stores. This program, taken on by our School Council, is great in assisting with the cost of our nutrition program as well as providing funds for other needs that arise in our school throughout the year. There is a box in front of the school office to drop off your receipts.

NUT ALLERGIES / SCENT SENSITIVITIES ALERT Please refrain from bringing any nut products (ie. Nutella Dip, snack-sized chocolate bars etc ) into the school. Remember that products that may appear to be nut-free may have come from a manufacturing plant that is not! Pine View is the home of students who have severe allergic reactions that could be fatal. We request that you also remain mindful that there are also scent sensitivities within our school and ask that you not wear perfumed products of any kind while at the school. We endeavour to maintain a safe learn-

ing environment for all and we appreciate your consideration and co-operation with these requests.

Book Fair 2014 was a great success! Scholastic sent us an amazing stock of interesting and exciting books and gifts. The students enjoyed browsing through the book

store and we were open for the parents who visited the school for parent teacher interviews. Total sales were an amazing $2,555!

Of this amount the school now has $1,188.00 to spend on new books for our school library. The winner of the door prize was

Brian Rathwell with a guess of 305.

We would like to thank all those who supported the book fair and also the parents and friends who volunteered.
