Holiday Luncheon

ANNUAL HOLIDAY LUNCHEON MEETING

I hope everyone has a splendid Thanksgiving and they follow it up with a won-

derful holiday season however you may celebrate. I want to let you know how much

we raised at the last meeting for the Huguenot Road Baptist Church Bike Fund. You

will be proud to know that we gave $570. I received an email from Donna Earley, the

church secretary, telling me the amount and she said that they were so grateful for

our generosity. The cost of bikes has made an alarming jump this year so our contri-

bution will make an enormous difference. Well done Bon Air !

As you probably know this is my last message as Bon Air President. I was

skeptical when I agreed to become president again in late 2014. Now I think it was

one of the best decisions I ever made. I have enjoyed having this job immensely, and I

think we as a club got some good work done. Thank you for supporting me and toler-

ating my sometimes—maybe more often than not—lame efforts at humor. It has

been my honor to serve you. I know you will be in good hands with our incoming Pres-

ident Dave Oxley. I want to thank all the people who worked with me over the last

three years. Your help was invaluable. The new board will be terrific, and I anticipate

that Bon Air Artists Association has a lot of good work to do in the future.

December 1st is our annual holiday luncheon meeting. It provides an oppor-

tunity to socialize with our many artist friends, to meet and greet new members, and

to enjoy some wonderful treats provided by our members. If you haven’t signed up to

attend, please consider doing so. Come with some yummy food to share and be pre-

pared at this special meeting to start the holiday seasons with friends and fellow

artists in a warm pleasant atmosphere. We will start with a brief meeting around

IMPRESSIONISTIC OIL PAINTING WORKSHOP BY Mark Hierholzer, awarded “Best Art Instructor for Adults” by Richmond

UPTOWN GALLERY EXHIBIT “PASSION FOR PURPLE” will be held at the ELM Loft Exhibit from February—March, 2018.

The exhibit will be the next color in our series of judged color shows. Called “PASSION FOR PURPLE”, it will highlight all shades of

violet and is open to all Richmond area artists. The entry fee is $10 EACH for the first two pieces, and $5.00 EACH for up to three

additional pieces. Ribbons and awards will be given. What better color than purple to usher in the Spring? But whether you plan

to paint spring blooms or purple people eaters, bring your “purple’ paintings to Uptown Gallery between January 25—27. The

show goes up on January 31th, and the opening reception will be on February 2nd. For more information, talk to BAAA members

ART SPEAKS ON THE BAY JURIED SHOW will be held on April 28—May 29, 2018. Opening receiption and awards will be

held April 29th at 4:00 pm. Total prizes will be $5000, including $1,500 for Best in Show. Entry deadline is March 1, 2018. Applica-

tion opens December 1, 2017. Check their website at artspeaksonthebay.com for more information and application.

Sam Anderson of Enso Media Firm presented our program on how to market your art on social media. He stated that if

you’re not on social media, you’ll be out of business in two years! That got our attention very quickly! Social media provides multi-

ple platforms: Facebook, twitter, blogs, Youtube, podcasts, Instagram, etc. It’s free, and the audience

is eager for information. He recommended a focus on the human element of your art: tell your story

through videos, photos, and messages. Educate people on art, telling them what’s involved, sources

of materials and inspirations. Sell yourself first. The objective is to build multiple relationships and

familiarize people with you and your product. This will establish the value of your art; and sales will

follow.

Sam suggested that 2 minutes of content is the optimum. For Facebook set up a business

page for a more extensive reach; a personal page is limited to 5,000 friends. He recommended two

posts a day for Facebook, three a day for Instagram. He encouraged the use of hashtags on Insta-

gram—the maximum of 30 for every post. People are out there searching on hashtags and the more

you use, the easier it is for them to find you. Hashtags can be set up ahead of time and posted as a

comment on Instagram will hide them.

In response to a question on donating work, Sam said his firm does free work strategically

and requests coverage in response. He suggested when making a donation of art to always use the

best work.

Sam said not to overthink social media management—a smart cell phone is all you need.

However, his firm will handle it for you for a fee. In closing, Sam shared the services his firm offers

and the associated charges.

President Jill Chafin called the meeting to order at 9:30 a.m. at the Huguenot Road Baptist Church. Jill welcomed everyone; there were no visitors at this meeting.

Minutes: Cathy Tyler moved to approve the October meeting minutes, Renee Major seconded, and the minutes were approved by unanimous vote.

President’s Report:

• Jill announced there will be a special “meet and greet” meeting for invited new members and board members in the room across the hall after the BAAA meeting. It will last about an hour to describe and discuss the Bon Air Artists Association and its purpose and goals. Past new member meetings at Jill’s home and Sherwin Graphery’s were lovely, but many new mem-bers could not attend so this meeting will try to include recent new members and those new members who missed the intro-duction meetings.

• Jill reminded members to turn in their completed Art Trading Cards and sign the sheet with name and number of submitted cards; she still has cards for sale during the break: four for $1.00. Completed cards can be mailed to Jill so that she can or-ganize them before December 1. Do NOT bring them to the December meeting.

• Jill encouraged members to support the Huguenot Road Baptist Church with its fundraising effort spearheaded by the South Richmond Baptist Center Christmas Store to purchase bicycles for disadvantaged children. The bikes will be purchased from Walmart on Black Friday and families will be given the opportunity to “shop” at the Christmas Store on December 7 and 8. Jill will accept cash, and checks should be written out to Huguenot Road Baptist Church with the notation Annual Bike Fund. Bev Perdue mentioned that several program speakers did not accept the speaker fee allocated so there is unused money available. Bev made a motion that BAAA donate $150.00 to the Bike Fund and Jack Frable said there are adequate funds available. The motion passed by a unanimous vote and Jack made out the check and gave it to Jill.

• Next was voting on the new slate of officers. Jill asked each nominated officer to come and stand in the front when called:

Patrice Reese moved to accept the slate of officers, Bobbi Delgado seconded and the motion passed by unanimous vote.

• J’net Kaulfers will be doing critiques again starting in January and sign-up sheets are available.

Officers' Reports:

1st Vice-President-Programs: (Bev Perdue Jennings) Bev said that Sam Anderson, President of Enso Media Firm, would speak about promoting your art through social media.

2nd Vice-President-Exhibits: (Dave Oxley and Suzanne Jepson)

• Kathy Miller and Suzanne Jepson had a sale at the Virginia Eye Institute.

• The Capital One show needs to be delivered November 11th. Contact Susan Smith with the name of the artwork.

• Cedarfield will hang on January 4, 2018. Sally Guynn and Trish Berry are cochairs.

• Suzanne Jepson noted that the Treasurer from Independence said that any artist who hangs a painting there must complete a W-9 form and have it on file there. Forms are available and should be completed and given to Suzanne at the next Inde-pendence change out. In addition, Kathy Scott is making new title cards, adding that anyone wishing to purchase a painting should take card to the sports store.

• Vince Calabrese said that all slots for the Crossroads booth are filled. Anyone who wants to be placed on the wait list, should contact Vince or Sara Richards.

know as soon as possible.

Treasurer: (Jack Frable) Jack is looking into getting a new insurance provider. For October 2017, the month ended with total as-sets of $21,949.01. The full report is on file. It’s time for annual dues so make out checks for $35.00 and give to Jack. Checks should be mailed to Jack’s home address as listed in the 2017 directory. It was suggested to put Jack's correct address in the up-coming newsletter.

Membership: (Shirley Hinkson) There were four inquiries this month, with one new member: Susan Linder who works in water-color. Shirley spoke about the new member meeting being held today and thanked Jill and Sherwin for their hospitality for prior new member events. Jill, Sherwin, Nell, Dave, Suzanne and Shirley will discuss the various aspects of BAAA, e.g. history, member-ship, exhibiting, Artful Healing, participation and answering questions. As a reminder, Shirley read the names of new members who were asked to attend this new member meeting today. The twelve members who juried last meeting were all approved. Shirley read the names and their juried medium:

Artful Healing: (Marti Franks) All slots are filled. There are 15 invited artists for the Ballroom and 18 or 19 artists for the Quigg Room. There are four 3-D artists but there is a need for one more preferably in glass or another medium. Currently represented are jewelry, fiber art, pottery, and woodcarving. Marti asked members to let her know of any 3-D artists who might be interested. There is room for six 3-D artists in the hall. It should be another great show.

Parliamentarian: (Pat Angevine) No report.

Publicity: (Beverley Jane Gallini) No report.

Historian: (Cathy Tyler) Cathy brought the draft copy of the book on the history of the Bon Air Artists Association. Pat Angevine helped edit the book. The finished book should be ready in January and books can be ordered from Shutterfly. Cathy will check with Shutterfly to see if there would be a discount for a large number or orders for members interested in a copy. Pat Angevine recommended that Cathy be reimbursed for any expenses she paid on this project, and by unanimous vote, it was approved.

Hospitality: (Carol Cullinan and Lee Austin) Carol and Lee asked members to sign up to help set up and take down for the Christ-mas luncheon. Set up starts at 10:00 a.m. with lunch starting at 11:00 a.m. It will be held in Classroom 3 at Crossroads Art Center like last year. Today, thanks to Trish Berry, Carolyn Payne, Jane Priddy, Sally Guynn, Carol Cullinan and Lee Austin for bringing re-freshments.

Directory: (Kathy Miller) Kathy said the new directories would be ready in January. It is important to let Kathy know about any changes in address, phone etc. Bev Perdue asked if cell phone numbers could be included. Kathy said there is not enough room, but she will look into it. Adding another line would add cost and size; it is an issue that will be considered.

Social Director: (Bobbie Delgado) Jill welcomed Bobbie Delgado back after her battle with cancer. Bobbie was appreciative and said after five months of chemotherapy and radiation treatments she is cancer free! Great news!

Museum Representative: (Ronda Dandliker) Not present. Museum activities are listed in the newsletter.

Old Business: None

New Business:

Garry-Lou Upton is the Richmond Representative for the Virginia Watercolor Society so if members have anything they want in-cluded in the “Waterlog” publication, let her know. If there is something for the “Splashings” page in the Waterlogue, contact Jack Frable. The annual show in Winchester was excellent this year. Bev Perdue won Best in Show, Sue Stuller: 1st Place, and Linda LaVigne-Long won an Award of Distinction. Richmond will host the annual show in 2020 so volunteers will be needed. Garry-Lou will be looking for a venue, artists and forming a workshop. She sent out an email to everyone asking for volunteers so please respond to her. Winchester raised $17,000 for prize money and local banks, garden clubs, and other groups helped with the plan-ning and donations, which made it a wonderful show.

With no other discussion, the business meeting was adjourned.

Program: Bev Perdue Jennings introduced Sam Anderson and his photographer partner Shane of their Enso Media Firm. Sam gave a very animated talk about his varied career and how it led him to being a consultant helping companies and individuals be-come more successful by using social media. He spoke of the importance of using social media everyday, having an updated web-site is good but not as effective as having a video of yourself with artwork on a blog, Facebook, Instagram and others. His compa-ny can present training seminars and work with individuals to help get started.

Susan Linders and Gay Plank are new members. A New Members Event was held after the November meeting.

Since this is my last month as Membership Chair, I want to thank everyone for their encouragement and assistance over the last

3 years. Since 2015 we have welcomed 63 new members and successfully juried 35 members. Thanks to all for choosing Bon Air

Artists.

BAAA ARTISTS ARE MAJOR PLAYERS AT UPTOWN GALLERY’S CURRENT SHOWS

BAAA connected artists are major players at Uptown Gallery in November and December. Kathy Miller and Patrice Reese are fea-

tured with watercolors of old-world European scenes and colorful abstracts of childhood innocence. The Abstract acrylic paintings

of Dave Northcott, are full of energy and verve. Artful Healing invited artist Jesi Pace-Berkeley fills the Frable Gallery with her

intense contemporary watercolors. Another Artful Healing invited artist Ron Holden helps fill your gift needs with his artistic and

practical turned wood vessels. In addition, Uptown artists are banding together in the Uptown Holiday Sale with discounted

works both framed and unframed.
