Interior Designers use colour, emotion and form to enhance the functionality, useability, safety and comfort of the area being transformed. Successful interior design is not just about the beauty of a space.

Environmental elements, sustainability and social consciousness are all elements that need to be considered in the modern interior designing landscape. This substantial, rigorous course comprises of a comprehensive 29 units that will equip you with the engineering and construction skills to work in private, corporate, heritage and commercial spaces.

HOW IT WORKSStudents will construct a portfolio to potentially enhance future job prospects, and will learn how to create and follow a design brief. Students will gain skills in computer design, learn how to create 2D and 3D perspective drawings and how to ‘cost’ a project and create a ‘mood board’. This Diploma adds the underpinning theory to your creative process; there is no prior study needed in design and your ultimate employment outcome is as an Interior Designer – upon successful completion of this course you will be ready to set up your own business or work as a contractor or in a commercial firm.

DESIGN INSTITUTE OF AUSTRALIA, RECOGNISED COURSEThis course has been designated a Recognised Course by the Design Institute of Australia (DIA). The DIA is Australia’s professional membership body for designers and creative professionals. This qualification meets the strict educational guidelines set by the DIA, so you can be confident that what you’ll learn has been endorsed by professional interior designers.

WHAT ABOUT RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (RPL)?We understand that you may already have many skills and areas of expertise that you have obtained in different ways and these are recognised through our Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process. Open Colleges has developed an RPL Application Kit for this course. The Student Handbook, available on the Open Colleges website, provides more information about our RPL process. Alternatively, you can contact a Course and Careers Adviser to discuss your RPL options.

WHAT ABOUT CREDIT TRANSFER?This qualification may be accessed by direct entry. Credit can be granted towards this qualification for relevant units from the Certificate IV in Design (Interior Decoration) or the Certificate IV in Interior Decoration LMF40408 or equivalent industry experience.

WHAT IS THE DURATION OF THE COURSE?The maximum duration for the course is 24 months. To complete the course in this timeframe, we recommend that you study a minimum of 15 hours per week. This is a guide only — the time taken to complete your course will depend on your level of skill and knowledge.

Education Requirements

You will need to have completed year 10, or equivalent. Equivalency can be demonstrated by one of the following:

A qualification at Certificate II level or higher OR 2 Years of industry experience in a role that requires the use of written documentation and communication.

Minimum Age Requirements

You will need to be at least 16 years old. If you are under 18 your enrolment form will need to be signed by a parent or guardian.

English Language Requirements

This course requires you to read comprehensive learner workbooks, undertake a range of written assessments and engage in online discussion forums. Furthermore, the course relies on the extensive use of written communication. Entry to the course requires English proficiency to Year 10 level, or equivalent (see Education Requirements for equivalency) or completion of an approved English language test (see website for details).

Creative Skills

Learners need to possess some creative and design skills. These may be demonstrated by:

■■ Confirmation that the learner completed a relevant subject at high school (such as art, design, digital media, animation or communication); and/or

■■ Confirmation that the learner has completed subsequent courses or qualifications in a related field, this may include the Certificate III in Design Fundamentals, Certificate IV in Design or some other course that builds basic creative and design skills; and/or

■■ Confirmation that the learner has at least 12 months of experience in the interior design and decoration industry and, in doing so, has undertaken tasks that have demonstrated at least basic creative and design skills.
