Heaven will be missing lots of familiar faces! “And throw this useless servant into the darkness outside, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth” Mt 25:30 This Sunday’s parable, like many, ends on a sad note: the unjust will find themselves damned, by their own bad choices in life, to hell. There is nothing new here, and our faithful Sunday Mass attendees know this reality. The quandary for myself as pastor, as well as for many a mom and dad, and for many a friend, is how to share this truth with a loved one who has walked away from the faith, or who chooses to live in denial, refusing or not caring to accept the some of their actions are mortal sins and will lead them nowhere but hell? Just today I had a mother describe to me how her daughter had gotten caught up in witchcraft and asked “what should I do, Father?” My response to her was automatic. First, pray for her, and second, show her that your love for her is real but without validating any of her new age nonsense. That old adage applies here: love the sinner, but hate the sin. Some parents do this better than others, being able to demonstrate their deep love for their children, while at the same time letting them know that their behavior or mindset is simply not acceptable. In many instances today, tough love is just what is needed. This is the love that puts the needs of the other, in this case the salvation of their very soul, above one’s own needs or comfort. Here is an example from my own childhood. On the day of my eighth grade graduation, as valedictorian of my class, I was practicing my little speech for my mother while she was sorting clothes for the laundry. Checking pockets, she found a bag of pot in my older brother David’s jeans. David might have had a genius IQ, able to get straight A’s without studying, but when it came to basic things, like “hiding the evidence” he was pretty clueless. I still remember my mother’s face when she found the pot – she became like a warrior before a major battle and marched to his room where he was getting dressed up for my graduation. Off went the dress clothes – David was going nowhere that evening. “You are not going anywhere for a long time. This is never happening again. If you think you are going to do “$#!?” like this and expect me to wash your clothes, cook your meals and clean your room, you have another thing coming. You are staying in your room for the rest of the night, and you are not even going to get tonight’s nice roast beef dinner!”

A Word about the WORD Una Palabra sobre LA PALABRA

¡Faltaran muchas caras familiares en el cielo! "Y saque a este siervo inútil afuera en la oscuridad, donde habrá llanto y rechinar de dientes" Mateo 25:30 La parábola de este domingo, como muchos, termina con una nota triste: los injustos se verán condenados, por sus propias malas decisiones en la vida, al infierno. No hay nada nuevo aquí, y nuestros fieles asistentes a la misa dominical conocen esta realidad. El dilema para mí como pastor, así como para muchos padres y madres, y para muchos amigos, es cómo compartir esta verdad con un ser querido que se ha alejado de la fe, o que elige vivir en negación, negándose ¿o no querer aceptar algunas de sus acciones son pecados mortales y no los llevarán a ninguna parte sino al infierno? Hoy mismo tuve una madre que me describió cómo su hija se ve vista atrapada en la brujería y me preguntó "¿qué debo hacer, padre?" Mi respuesta fue automática. Primero, reza por ella y, en segundo lugar, muéstrale que tu amor por ella es real, pero sin validar ninguna de sus tonterías de la nueva era. Ese viejo adagio se aplica aquí: ama al pecador, pero odia el pecado. Algunos padres hacen esto mejor que otros, demostrando su profundo amor por sus hijos, al mismo tiempo que les hacen saber que su comportamiento o actitud simplemente no es aceptable. En muchos casos hoy, el amor duro es justo lo que se necesita. Este es el amor que pone las necesidades del otro, en este caso la salvación de su propia alma, por encima de las propias necesidades o comodidades. Aquí hay un ejemplo de mi propia infancia. El día de mi graduación de octavo grado, como mejor estudiante de mi clase, estaba practicando mi pequeño discurso para mi madre mientras organizaba la ropa para ponerla a lavar. Revisando los bolsillos, encontró una bolsa de marihuana en los pantalones de mi hermano mayor David. David podría haber tenido un IQ alto de inteligencia genio, el sacaba grados de A sin estudiar, pero cuando se trataba de cosas básicas, como "ocultar la evidencia", no tenía ni idea. Todavía recuerdo la cara de mi madre cuando encontró la marihuana: se convirtió en guerrera antes de una gran batalla y se dirigió a su habitación donde se vestía para mi graduación. Ahí se fue la ropa de vestir - David no iba a ninguna parte esa noche. "No vas a ir a ningún lado durante mucho tiempo. Esto nunca volverá a suceder. Si cree que va a hacer esta "$ # !?" de esta manera y espera que te lave tu ropa, cocine tus comidas y limpie tu habitación, usted está equivocado. ¡Te quedarás en tu habitación el resto de la noche y ni siquiera vas a comer esta noche la cena de carne asada!

This went on for at least half an hour. The entire Kalchik household knew, and probably most of the neighbors knew, that my older brother would not be coming out of his room unless he repented and vowed to never ever do a stupid thing like that again. My parents’ generation had a clear understanding that their job was to love and to discipline their children, not to befriend them. They were not concerned with “hurt feelings” or backsides for that matter, but they did care about their children’s souls. This past summer we were all together for my parent’s 60th wedding anniversary, and while reminiscing, this incident and other similar ones were talked about and we all had a good hearty laugh. The laughter quickly segued to still other stories of my siblings with their own children, and the struggle to keep them on the straight and narrow path. Many times the laughter was mixed with tears, because true love is much more than just some sentiment, but a real dynamism within a family, saving each other from the brink of disaster. That being said, let’s get back to the Gospel. For too many of us these days, there will be a lot of familiar faces missing in heaven. But it doesn’t have to be that way. In my way of thinking we have a challenge and a choice. We can either get down to work and re-evangelize our loved ones and get them to revert to the One, True Faith, or we can just give up on them being welcomed into eternal life in heaven. For me, like my mother, I do not believe in giving up on people or walking away from a challenge, and I’m not afraid to get into someone’s face and say with all my heart “What is going on with you?” With Thanksgiving and Christmas around the corner and everyone gathering to celebrate, we have the golden opportunity to talk about the really important things, and reestablish bonds of faith. Real love is not a feeling but an action. As Saint Paul said “If I have all the faith so as to move mountians, but do not have, I am nothing.” (1 Cor 13:2) Let us all truly be something and let us love each other truly, like God loves us. A Word about THE WORD continued Una Palabra sobre LA PALABRA continua Esto duró por lo menos media hora. Toda la familia Kalchik sabía, y probablemente la mayoría de los vecinos sabían, que mi hermano mayor no saldría de su habitación a menos que se arrepintiera y prometiera nunca volver a hacer algo así de estúpido. La generación de mis padres entendía claramente que su trabajo consistía en amar y disciplinar a sus hijos, no en hacerse amigos de ellos. A ellos no les preocupaban los "sentimientos heridos" o las espaldas, pero les importaban las almas de sus hijos. El verano pasado estuvimos todos juntos para el 60 aniversario de bodas de mis padres, y mientras recordaba, se habló de este incidente y otros similares y todos nos reímos mucho. La risa se extendió rápidamente a otras historias de mis hermanos con sus propios hijos, y la lucha por mantenerlos en el camino recto y angosto. Muchas veces la risa se mezcló con lágrimas, porque el amor verdadero es mucho más que solo un sentimiento, pero un verdadero dinamismo entre una familia, salvándose mutuamente del borde del desastre. Esto dicho, regresemos al Evangelio, para muchos de nosotros en estos días, habrá muchas caras familiares que faltaran en el cielo. Pero no tiene que ser de este modo. En mi forma de pensar tenemos un reto y una decisión. Nosotros podemos ponernos a trabajar y re evangelizar nuestros seres queridos y consigan que ellos vuelvan al Uno, Verdadera Fe, o nos damos por vencidos que ellos sean bienvenidos a la vida eterna en el cielo. Para mi, como mi mama, yo no creo en darme por vencido con las personas o a un reto, y no tengo miedo en confrontar a alguien y decir lo que ciento en el corazón “¿Que te está pasando? Con el Día de acción de Gracia y la Navidad arreador de la esquina y todos reuniéndose para celebrar, nosotros tenemos la oportunidad en oro para hablar las cosas que son realmente importante, y reestablecer el vínculo de la fe. El amor real no es de sentir sino de acción. Como dijo San Pablo “Si yo tengo toda la fe como de mover montañas, pero no tengo, Yo no so
