A Word about the WORD Una Palabra sobre LA PALABRA
COMO EL CHOCOLATE Hace muchos años, cuando yo era sacerdote recién ordenado, intenté una explicación larga y detallada para los niños de San Miguel acerca de la Santísima Trinidad, y en su mayor parte mi explicación cayó en oídos sordos. Pero, afortunadamente, un chico entró, con las manos volando; ¡Padre Paul, Padre Paul! ¡La Santísima Trinidad, Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo es como el Chocolate! Ok Paco; ¿Qué quieres decir? Pues Padre Paul, hay tres tipos de Chocolate; Hay chocolate con leche, y luego hay chocolate oscuro, y luego hay chocolate blanco, cada tipo es un tipo claramente diferente de chocolate y aún así son todos chocolate. Así, el tipo de Chocolate es como la Persona de Dios, Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo; Y luego la materia de lo que los hace Chocolate es como la esencia de lo que hace a cada persona de la Santísima Trinidad Dios! OK Paco, lo entiendo - fin de clase. Como dice la vieja escrituras de adagio bíblico, "de la boca de los niños" se habla la verdad.
Hoy celebramos cómo, por un lado, Dios es Dios; Todos Poderoso, Todo lo Sabe, Creador, Etc., Y también celebramos cómo Dios es agradable y presente a todos y cada uno de nosotros si lo invitamos a ser así. Qué regalo, y luego otra vez, qué misterio. Para nosotros como seres humanos caídos es difícil entender cómo el sol se levanta cada día y mucho menos un Dios que puede ser tan poderoso y sin embargo tan humilde que se interesa y participa en nuestras vidas. ¡Qué misterio y qué profundidad! pagina 6
JUST LIKE CHOCOLATE
Many years ago when I was a newly ordained priest, I attempted a long and drawn out explanation for the kids at Saint Michael’s about the Holy Trinity, and for the most part my words fell on deaf ears. But then thankfully one boy chimed in, hands flying; Fr. Paul, Fr. Paul! The Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit is just like Chocolate! Ok Paco; what do you mean? Well Fr. P, there are three types of Chocolate; there’s Milk Chocolate, and then there is dark Chocolate, and then there is White Chocolate, each type is a distinctly different type of Chocolate and yet they are all Chocolate. So, the type of Chocolate is like the Person of God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit; and then the stuff of what makes them Chocolate is like the essence of what makes each person of the Holy Trinity God! OK Paco, I get it - end of class. As the old scriptural adage goes, “out of the mouth of babes” the truth is spoken. Today we celebrate how on the one hand God is God; All Powerful, All Mighty, All Knowing, Creator, Etc., And we also celebrate how God is personable and present to each and every one of us if we invite him to be so. What a gift, and then again, what a mystery. For us as fallen human beings it is hard to understand how the sun rises each and every day let alone a God who can be so powerful and yet so humble as to be interested and involved in our lives. What a mystery and what profundity!

For myself I learned my lesson from young Paco 18 years ago. It reminds me of the story of St. Augustine. He was supposedly walking on the beach, contemplating the mystery of the Holy Trinity in order to understand it when he spotted a young boy going back and forth with a shell full of water and pouring it into a hole in the sand. He asked the boy what he was doing. The boy told him that he was bringing all the sea into the hole. St. Augustine naturally told the boy that it was impossible. The boy sweetly answered that it was no more impossible than Augustine trying to comprehend the enormity of the mystery of the Trinity with his small human mind. He then vanished while Augustine was looking away, tryiing to absorb what had been said. The boy was possibly an angel sent by God, or perhaps the boy Jesus himself, giving Augustine a needed lesson in humility. Augustine later sermonized, “If you think you have grasped him, it is not God you have grasped”. So, I don’t let the mystery overshadow God’s gift of Himself to us as a Trinity. It neither overwhelms me, or underwhelms me; it simply is what it is: a gift, albeit a beautifully simple but deliciously complex one. Sort of like ice cream, you just eat it, enjoy it and wonder how anything could be so good. (Unless perhaps you are counting calories and then you read the back label, eat the ice cream anyway until it’s gone and then fall into a guilty stupor.) So, today let us celebrate the Holy Trinity, how God is fully Father, Son and Holy Spirit! And although this reality eclipses our bird brain capacities to grasp the great mystery of God, we can and do understand as Scripture tells us, that God is fully and completely loving, and perhaps even more wonderful than a supersized bowl of chocolate ice cream on a warm summer day. A Word about THE WORD continued Una Palabra sobre LA PALABRA continua Por mi parte aprendí la lección del joven Paco hace 18 años atrás. Me recuerda la historia de San Agustín. Supuestamente estaba caminando en la playa contemplando el misterio de la Santísima Trinidad para comprenderlo cuando vio a un muchacho que iba y venía con una concha llena de agua y la echaba en un agujero en la arena. Le preguntó al chico qué estaba haciendo. El muchacho le dijo que traía todo el mar en el agujero. San Agustín, naturalmente, le dijo al muchacho que era imposible. El chico respondió dulcemente que no era más imposible que Agustín tratando de comprender la enormidad del misterio de la Trinidad con su pequeña mente humana, y luego desapareció mientras Agustín miraba a otro lado. El niño fue posiblemente un ángel enviado por Dios, o tal vez el niño Jesús mismo, dando a Agustín una lección necesaria en la humildad. Más tarde Agustín pregonó: "Si crees que lo has captado, no es Dios lo has captado". Por lo tanto, no dejo que el misterio eclipse el don de Dios de Sí mismo para nosotros como una Trinidad.
