Report on Diocesan Convention

10

At this year’s Annual Diocesan Convention, our keynote speaker pointed out that

human beings have a pre-conceived bias about the world. When we as human

beings encounter a new person or situation we will, within seconds, start creating

an impression. These first impressions will continue to shape our world and our

understanding of others, long after our first encounter. I believe our pre-

conceived bias of others and the world also shapes our belief and understanding

of God. The “wow” moment during the presentation was when the speaker

talked about God’s pre-conceived bias about humanity. Through the lens of love,

God sees us, and the first impression is that we are good. Yup, check it out in

the book of Genesis. This bias shows up starting in the 4th verse, “And God saw

that the light was good;” The last line in Chapter 1 has this to say about God’s

view of the world, “God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very

good.” I think I am on safe theological grounds when I say that God loves all of

us and creation.

What is our pre-conceived bias? I like to challenge myself and ask these kinds of

penetrating questions for my own personal growth and spiritual engagement. I

have discovered one of my pre-conceived biases is that I don’t follow the crowd; I

look for details around the edge of the view. I find myself looking for who is not

around. I am naturally attracted to smaller settings and prefer to build relation-

ships one-to-one. That is why I think that St. Luke’s Episcopal Church as been

such a natural fit for me and my family.

Another insight that I gained from this year’s Convention is that “keep it simple”

works well. The theme for the Convention was “Belonging to God,” and our

presentations were focused on How do each one of our churches belong to God?

By asking that question over and over again, a connection was formed through-

out the community. People opened up. We experienced laughter and deeper

fellowship. We still conducted our business, and our time together was a

worshipful experience.

I believe that St. Luke’s is a place where people experience the sense that they,

too, belong to God. Through our prayers, music, ministry, and relationships we

see God looking at us and saying, “It is good.” Our children have teachers who

are dedicated and focused on providing them an environment where they can

relationships, and we are open about our concerns. I believe that we have reached a comfortable place in our

shared spiritual lives, both individually and collectively.

The last Sunday of November is the 1st Sunday of Advent. For the Episcopal Church, Advent is the start of

another liturgical year. Advent is a church season in which stories are told about how God entered our world as

a baby and presented the gift of incarnation; God is now among us in the flesh. This is a stunning proclamation,

because God didn’t dwell outside of creation, but joined us in our journey on earth. Can we change our

pre-conceived bias to also enter God’s world and see what Jesus sees in us? That would be a wonderful gift for

ourselves and for others.

PASSING THE TORCH

Words from the Senior Warden

Father Doug is a creative, inspirational leader and priest! He has researched and found a new

approach to the Stewardship Program for St. Luke’s; it is based on the book: New Consecration

Sunday Stewardship Program, written by Herb Miller. The committee for the Stewardship

Program is Father Doug, Marie Miller, Bettina Nimick Wood, and JoAnn Pearson. Our official Consecration

Sunday will be December 11, with one service at 9 A.M. and a catered brunch to follow. The Rev. Warren

Murphy, from Cody will lead the service on this Sunday. There will be many spiritual and informational parts to

this program for St. Luke’s congregation throughout November and early December. Reservations will be taken

for the Brunch. This will be a blessed time for all to decide on our spiritual giving.

The Foundation for the Episcopal Diocese of Wyoming is offering a $5000 grant to each of The 48 Episcopal

Parishes in Wyoming, to be used for people living in poverty. Our Vestry voted to apply for this grant, and decided

on several organizations in our Buffalo community to ask about need to help those in poverty situations.

Dale and Louise Anderson, and Father Doug attended the Diocesan Convention, October 7-9 in Sheridan.

Dale reported at the Vestry Meeting on October 16 that the convention was very inspirational. Louise presented

a program to the Convention of special happenings at St. Luke’s Church. I have attended two previous state

onventions and I enjoyed Bishop Smylie’s leadership at Convention and as our Wyoming Episcopal Bishop,

because he brings so much joy and spirit with his guidance of the State Diocese!

November is such a special and spiritual time with family and our church. St. Luke’s makes Thanksgiving so

meaningful through our belief in God.

Happy Thanksgiving!!

Consecration Sunday Is Coming

Congregations that approach financial stewardship from a biblical perspective do not view the money Christians give to their church merely as a way to pay its bills. Rather, such congregations see financial contributions as a way to help people grow spiritually in their relationship with God, by supporting their church’s mission and ministry with a percentage of their incomes. Our congregation’s stewardship committee has selected the New Consecration Sunday Stewardship Program as a way to teach the biblical and spiritual principles of generous giving in our stewardship education emphasis this year. New Consecration Sunday is based on the biblical philosophy of the need of the giver to give for his or her own spiritual development, rather than on the need of the church to receive. Instead of treating people like members of a social club who should pay dues, we will treat people like followers of Jesus Christ who want to give unselfishly as an act of discipleship. New Consecration Sunday encourages people toward proportionate and systematic giving in response to the question, “What percentage of my income is God calling me to give?” During morning worship on Consecration Sunday, we are asking our attendees and members to make their financial commitments to our church’s missionary, benevolent, and educational ministries in this community and around the world. Every attendee and member who completes an Estimate of Giving Card does so voluntarily by attending morning worship on Consecration Sunday. We urge people to attend who feel strongly opposed to completing a card. The procedure is done in such a way that no one feels personal embarrassment if he or she chooses not to fill out a card. We will do no home solicitation to ask people to complete cards. During morning worship our guest leader will conduct a brief period of instruction and inspiration, climaxed by members making their commitments as a confidential act of worship. We will encourage participation in Consecration Sunday events through the Consecration Sunday team and governing board members. Since we will make no follow-up visits to ask people to complete their cards, we will make every effort to inform, inspire, and commit everyone to attend Consecration Sunday worship. Thanks in advance for your enthusiastic participation in Consecration Sunday events. Marie Miller Stewardship Chair (The above letter replaces “Growing Through Giving” this month.)

WORSHIP COMMITTEE MEETING

Tuesday, October 18, 2016

The meeting was called to order at 10:00 by Nancy Straight, who opened with a prayer. Those in attendance

were: Nancy Straight, Fr. Doug, Elaine Walker, JoAnn Pearson, Emily Whipple, Mary Gammon, Linda Clark,

Karen Walker, Louise Anderson, and Nancy Bartlett.

The November calendar was reviewed, with changes and additions being made. We were reminded that the

secretary will be on vacation during the first full week in November. Fr. Doug Noted that November 6th is All

Saints’ Sunday, and that the 20th is Christ the King Sunday. We were also reminded that Daylight Saving Time

ends on November 6th, and that the Annual Wreath Decorating/Chili Supper will take place on November 30th.

Fr. Doug reported that home visits are going well, and that a new adult study is beginning. The adult group will

be studying Embracing the Prophets in Contemporary Culture, by Walter Brueggemann. Fr. Doug also said that

Sunday, December 11th, will be Consecration Sunday. On that day there will be one service at 9:00, followed

by a catered brunch. A special guest, Warren Murphy, will be conducting the service that day.

There was a discussion regarding seasonal activities such as Advent, which begins on November 27th. The

discussion included thoughts about the changes in music and Sunday services during Advent. The discussion

will be continued at the next meeting.

Fr. Doug closed the meeting with the Celtic Prayer.

The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, November 15th.

Respectfully submitted,

Karen Walker

A REPORT FROM YOUR DELEGATES TO DIOCESAN CONVENTION

I have never been so Proud to be an Episcopalian!!

Dale and I were your representative's to our Annual Diocesan Convention

Oct. 7-9th in Sheridan. I must tell you that we came home really renewed

and proud to be a part of this wonderful church. ( I decided that this time

together should be changed from “Convention” to “Spiritual Retreat” as that was what we ex-

perienced.) Having attended these off and on since we were only a Missionary District, I was so impressed with the

difference from those times. They used to be all about meetings and long sessions of finance etc. details. Now, all the

important business had been completed in committees and we only had a short time of reaffirming those actions. The

rest of the time was spent around the convention theme: “We Belong To God.”

The goal of getting to know each other better was creatively accomplished as each church was represented by a table

display. Hunting through clues with a fun scavenger hunt helped us all really look at our fellow diocesan churches.

An excellent speaker, The Rev. Jimmy Bartz from Jackson, told us that in ONE TENTH OF A SECOND we make

our first impression of someone and in the next few seconds we have made up our minds if we like or trust the person,

as determined by our view of the world. (My mom was right when she used to say, “You never get a second chance

to make a first impression.”) He challenged us on the fact that we all have biases but we need to try to change that to

see God in everyone. (He said his probably impossible goal was to be able to do that 51% of the time; which he also

reminded us was a failing grade in school!)

In the past, the Foundation part of our meetings was, to me, something to just get through. This time we heard

renewal stories of spiritual growth, as each member told stories about the grants they had given this past year. It

made me realize how important the bigger picture of our diocese is.

A most precious time for me was when different churches shared “WOW Moments”. Fr. Doug shared his experience

with the results of our break-in. ( Earlier in the convention Doug and I shared a Power Point show about St. Luke's.

We were one of four churches asked to do this, as part of the agenda. You will get to see it at our Annual Meeting in

January.) .

We laughed, we sang, we worshiped and we came away from this wonderful weekend realizing that we all truly

belong to God; and feeling really proud to be a part of this wonderful diocese,

Thank you for sending us.

Our power is shut off

and suddenly we become

thankful for electricity.

Our garbage is not

picked up, and suddenly

we become thankful for

the garbage collector’s

weekly stop.

A good friend dies, and

suddenly we discover how

much he meant to us.

Our water becomes too

polluted to drink, and

suddenly we appreciate

pure water.

Why is it, Lord, that we

take for granted the

uncounted blessings of

life until they are removed

from us?

We take for granted

the mind you have given

us, the beauty of the

earth around us, the rain

and soil combining to

produce our food, the love

of family and friends

surrounding us.

Today we thank You for

being patient with us, for

not forgetting us when we

forget You, for loving and

forgiving us, for music and

singing, for rest and

leisure, for those who

understand us, for

laughter and joy, for being

with us now.

Most of all, we thank

you for not withholding

the blessings of life from

us even though we take

them for granted.

Take us from worship

into the world where we

t u r n w o r d s o f

thanksgiving into deeds

of service. Amen.
