Charity Conquers All The Consoling Spiritual doctrine of Saint Francis de Sales

    WISDOM OF THE SAINTS

Saint Francis de Sales teaches us that a holy life is a happy life.

The world runs down true devotion, painting devout people with a gloomy, melancholy aspect, and affirming that religion makes them dismal and unpleasant. Butthe Holy Ghost tells us through His Saints, and Our Lord has told us with His own lips, that a devout life is very sweet, very happy and very loveable. The world, looking on, sees that devout persons fast, hold vigils and pray, endure offenses patiently, serve the sick and poor, restrain their temper, check and subdue their passions, deny themselves in all sensual indulgence, and do many other things which in themselves are hard and difficult. But the world sees nothing of that inward, heartfelt devotion which makes all these actions pleasant and easyAlthough the devout soul finds bit-ter herbs along its path of devotion, they are all turned to sweetness and pleasantness as it treads;and the martyrs have counted fire, sword, and rack but as perfumed flowers by reason of their devotion. And if devotion can sweeten such cruel torments, and even death itself, how much more will it give a charm to ordi-

  • SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION AT THE SHRINE

His Excellency, the Most Reverend Joseph N. Perry will administer the Sacrament of Confirmation and will celebrate a Pontifical High Mass on Sunday, October 11 of next year. Those who would like to receive the sacrament of Confirmation should contact the Priory as soon as possible in order to participate in the preparation pro-gram for the reception of this Sacrament.

NOVEMBER: MONTH OF THE HOLY SOULS

Prayer for those who mourn Almighty God, Who knows the weakness and frailty of our nature: we beseech Thee to give us Thy servants whom Thou hast stricken with this sorrow, such measure of Thy grace as shall enable us to bear it with humility, resignation, and submission to Thy divine Will. Grant that the affliction which it has pleased Thee to bring upon us may be a means of drawing us nearer to Thee. Strengthen us, O Lord, that we may not languish in fruitless sorrow, but by the assistance of the Holy Ghost, may truly be comforted by submitting ourselves to Thy holy Will. Grant that no impatient murmuring may find a place in our hearts: that we may not sorrow as those who have no hope. Let not our grief exceed the bounds of reason and religion; but so temper it, we beseech Thee, with the consolations of the Holy Ghost, that we may find the inward rest of perfect submission to Thy holy Will, and unshaken trust in Thy loving mercy. Teach us to set our affections on things above, not on things of earth; on those joys which never fade, on the pleasures that are at Thy right hand forevermore. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

    ANNOUNCEMENTS & UPCOMING EVENTS

DO YOU REMEMBER YOUR CONFIRMATION? REMINDERS FROM THE CATECHISM Confirmation is a sacrament which gives us the Holy Ghost, imprints on our souls the mark of a soldier of Jesus Christ, and makes us perfect Christians by confirming us in the faith and perfecting the other virtues and gifts received in Baptism. The gifts of the Holy Ghost received in Confirmation are these seven: Wisdom, Understanding, Coun-sel, Fortitude, Knowledge, Piety, and the Fear of the Lord. The matter of this sacra-ment, besides the imposition of hands by the bishop, is the anointing of the forehead of the baptized with sacred chrism; and for this reason it is also called the sacrament of Chrism, that is Anointing. Sacred Chrism is oil of olive mingled with balsam, and con-secrated by the bishop on Holy Thursday. In this sacrament the oil, which is unctuous and strengthening, signifies the abounding grace which is diffused over the soul of the Christian to confirm him in his faith; and the balsam, which is fragrant and prevents corruption, signifies that the Christian, strengthened by this grace, is enabled to give forth a good odor of Christian virtue and preserve himself from the corruption of vice. In administering the sacrament of Confirmation the bishop first stretches his hands over those to be confirmed, and invokes the Holy Ghost upon them; next, he anoints the forehead of each one with sacred chrism in the form of a

cross, saying the words of the form; I sign thee with the Sign of the Cross, and I confirm thee with the chrism of salvation, in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen." Then he gives each one confirmed a light stroke on the cheek with his right hand, saying: Peace be with you; finally, he solemnly blesses all those he has confirmed. The anointing is made on the forehead, where signs of fear and shame appear, in order that he who is confirmed may understand that he should not blush at the name and profession of a Christian, nor fear the enemies o f his faith. A light stroke is given to the person confirmed to show him that he should be ready to bear all insults and endure all sufferings for the faith of Jesus Christ. In order that, by word and example, they may show the confirmed the way to eternal life and help him in the spiritual combat. They should be of proper age, Catholics, confirmed, instructed in the necessary truths of religion, and persons of good life. The sponsor in Confirmation contracts the same spiritual relationship as is contracted in Baptism.

    LITURGICAL CALENDAR & READINGS

INTROIT: GEN. 18. 17 Terrible is this place: it is the house of God, and the gate of heaven; and it shall be called the court of God. Ps. How lovely are Thy tabernacles, O Lord of Hosts! My soul longeth and fainteth for the courts of the Lord. . Glory be to the Father.

COLLECT: O God, who every year dost renew the day of the consecration of this Thy holy temple, and continuest to bring us in safety to Thy sacred mysteries, graciously hear the prayers of Thy people, and grant that all who enter this temple to implore Thy blessings, may rejoice in obtaining whatsoever they ask. Through our Lord.

EPISTLE: APOCALYPSE 21. 2-5 In those days I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her hus-band. And I heard a great voice from the throne, saying: Behold the tabernacle of God with men, and He will dwell with them. And they shall be His peo-ple, and God Himself with them shall be their God: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes: and death shall be no more, nor mourning, nor cry-ing, nor sorrow shall be any more, for the former things are passed away. And He that sat on the throne said: Behold, I make all things new.

GRADUAL: This place was made by God, a priceless mystery, it is without reproof. . O God, before whom stands the choir of angels, give ear to the prayers of Thy servants. ALLELUIA: PS. 137. 2 Alleluia, alleluia. . I will worship towards Thy holy temple: and I will give glory to Thy name. Alleluia. . The house of the Lord is well founded upon a firm rock. Alleluia.

GOSPEL: LUKE 19. 1-10 At that time, Jesus entering in, walked through Jericho. And behold, there was a man named Zacheus, who was the chief of the publicans, and he was rich. And he sought to see Jesus who He was: and he could not for the crowd, because he was low of stature. And running before, he climbed up into a sycamore-tree, that he might see Him: for He was to pass that way. And when Jesus was come to the place, looking up He saw him, and said to him: Zacheus make haste and come down: for this day I must abide in thy house. And he made haste and came down, and re-ceived Him with joy. And when all saw it, they mur-mured, saying, that He was gone to be a guest with a man that was a sinner. But Zacheus standing, said to the Lord: Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have wronged any man of any thing, I restore him fourfold. Jesus said to him: This day is sal-vation come to this house; because he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

    HOLY INFANT KING NOVENA

In honor of the Divine Infant King a Votive High Mass of the Nativity is celebrated at the Shrine at 7:00 pm on the 25th day of every month. In preparation for this monthly commemoration of the Infant King, a Novena prayer in His honor is recited after daily Mass from the 17th through the 25th of every month.

The more you honor Me, the more I will bless you. Here, the Divine Infant King, real Symbol for Truth Lived in Charity, will be the center of liturgical worship and devo-tion. A seventeenth century statue of the Divine Infant King, donated by a generous benefac-tor, has been solemnly crowned and enthroned above the High altar of the Shrine by His Emi-nence Francis Cardinal George in December 2007.

The Shrine of Christ the King was built in 1923 by renowned architect Henry Schlacks as St. Clara Church. Having barely escaped the wrecking ball, this magnificent historic landmark has been given to the care of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest. With only provisional furnishings, the Shrine is already a haven for the transcendent beauty of the Ex-traordinary Form of the Latin Rite, dear to our beloved Pope Benedict XVI.

    Novena Prayer

O Divine Infant Jesus, I have recourse to Thee. Please, through Thy Blessed Mother, assist me in this necessity (mention intention here), because I firmly believe that Thy Divinity can help me. I hope with confidence to obtain thy holy grace. I love Thee with all my heart and with all the strength of my soul. I repent sincerely of my sins and I beg Thee, O Good Jesus, to grant me the strength to triumph over them. I resolve never more to offend Thee and I come to offer myself to Thee with the intention of enduring everything rather than to displease Thee. Henceforth, I desire to serve Thee with fidelity and, for the love of Thee, O Divine Infant, I will love my neighbor as myself. All powerful Infant, O Jesus, I implore Thee again, assist me in this need. Grant me the grace of possessing Thee eternally with Mary and Joseph and of adoring Thee with the angels in the heavenly court. Amen.
