Blue Sea LineAdds 4 Ships

Blue Sea Line, a joint service of BlueFunnel Line (Liverpool) and SwedishEast Asia Co., Ltd. (Gothenburg) hasannounced that the M/K PRIAM (pro-nouneed to rhyme with "time") hasjoined its fleet in service between South-east Asia, the Far East and U.S. Gnlfand Atlantic ports.

This is the first of four 21 knot sisterships that have been scheduled to re-place older vessels in the fleet. The otherthree ships are the M/l / PEISANDER,the M/I/ PROMETIIEUS, and theM/V PROTESILA US.

The introduction of these faster shipswill provide a transit time from theU.S.A. to the Straits of 26 days andfrom Japan to South Atlantic ports of21 days; 5 to 7 days faster than atpresent.

Commencing with her maiden BlueSea Line voyage in November, theM/F PRIAM will offer shippers manynew facilities, includino upwards of720,000 cubic feet of bale space, 20,000cubic feet of wbich is refrigerated.Other advantages include space for 80to 100 containers and a heavy lift eapae-ity of 60 tons. Approximately 2000 tonsof liquids cargo can be carried in 13deep tanks, ranging in size from 4=5 to400 tons.

These vessels are scheduled to departfrom Houston on or about the 10th ofeach month.

The M/V MONCHEN, the second of two recently built barge-carrying ships by Combi Line, dockedon its maiden voyage at the Port of Houston’s new Barbours Cut Terminal in early November, givingdirect Houston-to-Europe LASH (Lighter Aboard Ship) service every 17 days. The MUNCHEN, shownhere loading barges in Europe, destined for Houston, is the sister ship of the M/V BILDERDYK whichopened Barbours Cut in June of this year with its maiden voyage call. The two new 43,000 ton shipsare 857 feet long and cruise at 18 knots. They each carry 83 barges aboard, each of which havecargo capacities of 365 long tons. The COMBI LASH service is a combination of Holland America Lineand the West German Hapag-Lloyd, AG. Biehl & Company, with Houston headquarters, are U.S.general agents for Combl Line.

West AfricanLine Formed

North American-West African Line(NAWAL), a new coordinated serviceof four major steamship lines, is com-mencing operations.

Eric de Spirlet, president of AtlanticOverseas Corporation, a newly formedsteamship agency for the new line, listedits participants as Belgian Line, Char-geurs Reunis, Compagnie Maritime duZaire and Elder Dempster.

M. de Spirlet, who is also chairman ofDart Containerline, Inc., and Presidentof Belgian Line, Inc., noted that eachline in the combination service is finan-cially stable, broadly based and activein many phases of shipping and trans-portation. He estimated that collectiveexperience in the trade totals over twocenturies.

The steamship executive said the co-ordinated service will offer a uniquerange of coverage in North America forthe West African trade "right fromDuluth, Minnesota all the way to CorpusChristi, Texas and including for the firsttime a total of 15 Gulf, Great Lakes andSt. Lawrence Seaway and Atlantic Coastports on a regular basis."

Coverage in West Africa, he said issimilarly comprehensive covering 15ports from Dakar, Senegal to Lobito,Angola. He added that a total of 11ships will initially be involved in theconsolidated schedule.

Named vice chairman was Louis F.Brown, Jr., chief, fire protection andtraffic control officer for the Port ofHouston Authority.

The two new Council officers, votedin by acclamation, will take over theirnew posts immediately.

The Port Safety and Advisory Councilis an organization which is composed ofmembers from private concerns andpublic agencies interested in all mari-time matters and its views on varioussubjects in its field are highly regardedby local, state and Federal officials.

EnvironmentCase To Be Heard

A conference scheduled for Nov. 19-22in Houston will take the form of a trialand a Congressionally authorized 100-member body of individuals will sit asjurors to hear the case: The Environ-ment: Man On Trial.

The conference/trial is the fourth offour major conferences on environmentaleducation, beginning in 1969, and dele-

gates to it are individuals and non-gov-ernmental representatives of the U.S.National Commission for UNESCO (theUnited Nations Educational, Scientificand Cultural Organization) and who areadvisors to the U.S. Department of Stateon UNESCO, as well as liaison between
