AcknowledgmentsYoung people require as many opportunities as possible to experience the world of work in order to become well informed before developing a career pathway plan for their futures. This workbook has been developed to provide secondary students in Year 7 to 10 with a range of activities to explore the exciting career opportunities available in Victoria. It presents career information on one of the 11 industries that are experiencing exponential growth. The Career Education Association of Victoria wishes to acknowledge the support of the Victorian Department of Education and Training in the development of this IIEP Student Workbook.

Industry Immersion Experience Program

What will I do for a job in the future?This is a BIG question! But also a very important one.

Getting ready for the world of work includes understanding who we are and what we value. We need to know why we work but also who we would like work for. The Industry Immersion Experience Program will help you in researching future careers and perhaps life options!

What is an Industry Immersion Experience?An Industry Immersion Experience is an opportunity to actively engage in a morning, an afternoon or a day on site in industry. It is an opportunity to see how industry operates to give you a better understanding of the world of work in order to help you make decisions about future subjects, courses and training. You will be able to hear directly from Managers, CEOs and staff regarding areas of current and future skills needs in industry, as well as ask questions about working in the industry. You can find out ‘first hand’ what skills and training are required and what employers look for when recruiting. The Industry Immersion Experience Program is an ideal opportunity to gather information to help you with your future career and pathway planning.

What can I do to prepare for an Industry Immersion Experience?It’s a great idea to do your own research in order to help you formulate questions you can ask on the day. Conduct a web search of the company you are going to visit. What do you think might be some of the careers that exist in that industry? What do you want to know about those careers? What is it like for the people that work in those positions? Do they get to travel a lot? Do they work long hours? Do they sometimes have to work at night? How long did it take them to find a job in the industry? What was the first job they ever did and what did they learn from that job that helps them in the role they have now? There are many questions you could ask that will help you decide whether it is an area you would like to research further.

Jobs outlookDefence TechnologyDefence Technologies are used in all areas of the Defence Force including the Air Force, the Army and the Navy. They form part of the aircrafts, ships, vehicles, weaponry and ICT systems that the Defence Force uses. Defence Technology is used in the Navy to monitor and protect our coastlines, in the Army to extend the capabilities of heavy artillery tanks and armoured vehicles and in the Air Force to improve mobility in search and rescue missions.

Fast Facts:• Recruitment in the Defence Force and in Defence Technologies is at one of the highest levels since 1999 • The Defence Forces employs around 20,000 people and associated support roles in areas such as

equipment maintenance and other support activities provide work for around 7,000 people• Australia is around the 13th largest defence spender in the world with the budget forecast to grow from

$32.3 billion to $42.4 billion in 2020/21• The Army has a long-term target for increasing the participation of women in the industry to 15 % by 2023

What does an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer do?Tasks include:• Dismantling, inspecting, testing, repairing and reassembling aircraft engines, ancillary motors and

engine accessories, electrical systems, and subassemblies of aircraft frames• Installing electrical circuits and equipment• Testing aircraft communication equipment, aircraft instrumentation and electronic systems using

electronic testing equipment and specialised test apparatus• Replacing and testing aircraft oxygen system components• Assembling parts and subassemblies of aircraft frames• Conducting routine pre-flight inspections of engines, aircraft frames and mechanical systems• Maintaining records of action taken

Activity A (designed for Levels 7 & 8)DESIGN & TECHNOLOGIES – Planning & Managing

Here you will find articles about the number of ways that the Australian Army has helped with relief efforts in flood and severe weather conditions across the country.

With a partner select one of these articles. Using the information you can gather in the article identify 5 ways the Army is able to assist in the relief effort. With your partner you must design a vehicle that easily addresses all the problems that were faced by relief workers. It can be designed for air or land but must include 5 features that directly respond to the needs of those in the severe weather conditions described in the article.

Think about how the vehicle responds to the environment around it.

Present your drawing to the class, describing all its emergency relief features.
