see which teachers have the shortest waiting line, and go to their waiting area. We hope that using this format will make it easier for more parents to see more of their child’s teachers. It is very important that you attend these conferences. Studies show that having a parent who is involved in his or her child’s education is a key factor for student success. These conferences represent the best way we have found to let you know how your child is doing in school. Again, we look forward to seeing you at Defiance High School! Department News The Family and Consumer Science Department has had a busy start to the school year. While wishing Mrs. Wank luck in her position at the elementary, we are also welcoming Ms. Cassis to the department. Ms. Cassis will now be teaching Parenting, Fitness and Nutrition, and Life Skills. Mrs. Kamphaus will be taking over Family Living, Food Choices, and Advanced Food courses. The fall Food Choices classes are currently tackling the topics of etiquette, manners, and nutrition. They will soon be learning the essentials of baking for the holidays by learning about and preparing quick breads, yeast breads and pies. The students will be taking advantage of seasonal produce by preparing apple and pumpkin dishes using culinary techniques used in professional recipes. Family Living classes have completed personal inventories to identify positive personality traits and characteristics that enable them to be successful in life. The current topics include strengthening family life and gaining appreciation for the members of their families. The fall Parenting classes are on their way to successfully learning the human reproduction systems of the male and female. They are soon going to be learning what happens in the nine months of pregnancy. Students will soon be able to know what it actually feels like to be pregnant by wearing the empathy belly and walking up and down the hallway. The students are looking forward to taking the Real Care Babies home as well as what it really takes to take care of infants and toddlers. Life skill classes have been cooking up a storm in the kitchen. They have showed off their culinary skills once and will continue for the rest of the quarter. They have been learning about kitchen equipment, decision-making, as well as kitchen math. Students are looking forward to learning about the new Food Guide Pyramid and food storage as well as different cooking techniques. Fitness and Nutrition have been kicking it up in high gear these past few weeks. The students have been going to the YMCA once a week doing different exercises to get fit and learn that exercise can be fun. They are currently learning about their metabolism as well as their diets. Science Department/Mrs. Lamb As you read this, more than 100,000 Americans are waiting for an organ transplant. Many of them will die waiting. Nationally, 18 men, women and children will die each day waiting for an organ. The organ shortage grows at a staggering rate as approximately every 10 minutes another person is added to the National Transplant Waiting List. On any given day in Ohio, nearly 2,900 people are waiting for an organ transplant, with over 2,200 people waiting for a kidney transplant due to end stage kidney disease. In Ohio, 210 people died waiting for an organ transplant in 2007. More than 1,000,000 people benefit from tissue transplants each year. Annually over 1,600 Ohioans have their sight restored through cornea transplants. And yet, fewer than half of Ohioans have registered to become organ and tissue donors. This means that one Ohioan dies every other day waiting for a life-saving transplant. The Anatomy & Physiology classes had a guest speaker on October 2nd from Life Connection of Ohio out of Maumee come help educate them on making an informed decision when presented with the issue of organ and tissue donation. Life Connection of Ohio is the local organ procurement organization designated by the federal government to coordinate organ donation for transplantation or research in northwest and west central Ohio. Please take the time to have a family discussion about organ and tissue donation. Approximately every 16 minutes someone is added to the list. A single donor has the potential to save up to eight lives through organ donation and may help improve the quality of life for more than 50 individuals! ****************************************************************************
