CLIENT Caernarfon Harbour Trust
LOCATION Caernarfon, Wales
DATE May 2014
As part of a project to rejuvenate and improve Caernarfon Promenade, The CaernarfonHarbour Trust, in conjunction with the local authority, decided to improve the surface overlooking the Menai Straits, between the Anglesey Arms Public House and Victoria Dock.
The area is a major tourist attraction, has an historical and protected setting and sees largevisitor numbers every year - all major considerations when installing a new surface.
Numerous challenges had to be planned for and overcome during the course of the project:
Durability – As a major tourist attraction, the promenade area has a large number of visitors(walking, cycling and vehicular) meaning that the surface needed to be extremely durable. Efficiency – The surface area to be covered was in excess of 3000 m2 and a system was required that could be put down quickly and efficiently in order for the promenade to re-openin time for the Easter Holidays.Specialist – The Harbour Trust wanted the area to be part of the attraction and to beinformative as well as decorative.Resilient – With the area requiring resurfacing being a promenade, constant contact with saltwater meant that any surface had to show element resilience.

THE REQUIREMENTS
THE SOLUTION
With the various challenges laid out at the start of the project, it was quickly established that the promenade needed a resin bound stone surface – once this had been decided there was really only one choice for the project – DekorBound. Unlike other surfacing solutions, DekorBound allowed the option of a hardwearingsurface, could be laid at a depth to suit the application and traffic requirementsand provided a look that complimented the surrounding historical buildings. Inaddition, the variety of stone blends using DekorBound allowed creativity to flowand made for an aesthetically pleasing finish, with minimum difficulty.
With DekorGrip’s Resin Bound system – DekorBound – chosen, a combination of Brittany Bronze, Black Basalt and Sandringham aggregates were selected to be laid at a depth of 18mm.
The choice of aggregates allowed the contractor to provide distinctive areas along the promenade, highlighting walkways and other features. The Black Basalt blendwas specially created for this project by the DekorGrip mix team and used to createstunning nautical shapes and route markings. The DekorGrip Team also advisedon the use of aluminium edging to further enhance the crispness and look of themarkings.
DekorGrip were also able to help with the timing and delivery issues that the contractor faced. Through close communication and planning of delivery, the 3000m2 was laid in a very short timescale and the promenade was able to be reopened to the public in time for the Easter Holidays.
