3.2 Industry Analysis: Quality assurance for fruit industry
Industry: The fruit scanner is part of a quality assurance for fruit industry
Force: High/Low: Justification:
Buyer power: HighThe Buyer power is high for this device, due to different alternatives for this product that can check the freshness of the fruits. Such as using RFID with Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide Sensor, colorimeter, and MRI scanners.
(Ki Hwan Eom, Min Chul Kim, SeungJoon Lee, and Chang won Lee, 2012)
Supplier power: LowThere are other choices to buy from this product since similar devices have been created, such as using RFID with Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide Sensor, colorimeter, and MRI scanners. Therefore the supplier power is low.

Threat of new entrants: High Threat of new entrants is high since making
this product does not cost much therefore has
a low cost production. Since this device can
be made through used and cheap hardware.
Threat of substitutes: Low There are not many alternatives for this
deivce since this is a new product, which
makes the threat of subsititutes low. Since
and alternative for consumers who don’t need
any devices to check their fruits, the only
other alternative would be to check the fruit
physically.
Rivalry among existing
competitors:
High There are many other competitors in this
industry since the other devices like the MRI
and colorimeter, can also tell whether a fruit is
fresh or not. Making the rivalry among
exsisting competitors high.
Overall attractiveness of the industry: According to porters five froces model above,
the industry is very attractive since this fresh fruit scanner device is easy to produce
and comsume, compared to the other devices such as the MRI and colorimeter.
Therefore making this industry an attractive industry.
