A Ladner heritage homewill soon be on the move, but its owners aren’t con-vinced it’s going to theright location.

The Gillespie Houseat 4964-47A Ave. will bere-located sometime thismonth to a farm on 34thStreet that is also ownedby the property owner. There-location is expected topave the way for a pro-posed housing develop-ment.

The Gillespie Housewas constructed in 1901for R.H. Gillespie, anemployee of MarshallSmith’s store. The houseis on Delta’s HeritageInventory, but not on theDelta Heritage Registry, which provides greaterprotection.

John and Anne Flaming

own the property andare prepared to move thehome, but feel it shouldbe placed somewherethe public can enjoy andappreciate it.

“I have no problem withheritage stuff and to saveit. What we have a prob-lem with is they [Deltacouncil] want us to moveit to our farm, and use itas a storage shed, whichis not feasible,” said JohnFlaming.

“I don’t think that is agood use of our heritageproperties or houses. IfDelta wants these housessaved, they should be tak-ing them to a spot wherepeople can see and enjoythe heritage. They havelots of land available. Whynot create a heritage parksimilar to what Burnabyhas or other municipali-ties have? A house is not astorage shed— a house is

something to live in.”Delta council has been

struggling with the issue ofpreserving heritage homesfor years.

In 2012, the Corporationof Delta hired a consult-ant to develop a heritagestrategy. A draft, whichsets out a plan to establisha framework for herit-

age preservation, wascompleted in early 2014and the full plan shouldbe back before councillater in the fall, accordingto Coun. Sylvia Bishop, who is familiar with theGillespie House and theFlamings’ developmentapplication.

“Originally council

wanted the house kept onthe site and made part ofthe development,” saidBishop. “But that is notwhat the property ownerwants, and I respect thefact the developer has aprocess for the land andhe wants to develop it, butwhat can we do?”

Bishop said while shecan see the desire to pre-serve the home in its natu-ral condition, council issimply not in the positionto transport and relocatehouses.

“This is a constant chal-lenge for us,” she said.“We don’t have the land totake them to and try andpreserve them. I would saythat the heritage strategy, when it is finally adopted, envisions having sometools to provide incentivesto developers so that theycan maintain a house in itslocation.”

The focus will shift torestoration once the mas-sive wildfire in Burns Bogis extinguished.

Delta enthusiasticallyannounced Wednesdaythat the fire, which brokeout Sunday and had grownto almost 80 hectares, was fully contained. Morethan 80 firefighters fromDelta and across MetroVancouver, as well as sev-eral water bombers, weremobilized when the firebroke out. At one point theblaze jumped Highway 17and threatened the TilburyIndustrial Park.

Bog fires have thepotential to burn under-ground, but officialsbelieved it may not havepenetrated the peat line, saying, “The water moundis higher and the bog is inmuch better shape thanduring previous fires.”

The evacuation of theindustrial park was liftedas well as the closure ofHighway 17.

However, officials pre-dicted it would still takeanother week to ensurethe fire, which is underinvestigation, is complete-ly extinguished.

Now that that local stateof emergency is over, next

up Delta will arrange anon-site visit with mem-bers of Metro Vancouver’sScientific Advisory Panel.

“It is essential thatexperts and science guideus in recovery of BurnsBog. The Corporationof Delta is committed tocontinuing our role in thelong-term preservationand health of this natu-ral wonder,” a municipalstatement read.

The advisory panelmeets regularly to provideadvice to the bog’s man-aging partners on issues

relating to hydrology andbog ecology.

When a managementagreement was signedfollowing the public pur-chase of a large portion ofBurns Bog, Delta took onresponsibility for drainagemanagement. During thepast few years, significantwork has been done byDelta to dam internalditches in an effort toincrease water levels.

In conjunction withthe ditch blocking efforts,an extensive water levelmonitoring program has

been in place. Monitoringhas shown water levelsincreasing in the areaswhere dams have beenconstructed, and stablewater levels in the remain-der of the raised bog.

However, the loss ofbog habitat due to fire isa significant issue for theadvisory panel.

A Delta civic report sixyears ago noted the lastmajor bog fire in 2005damaged a sizeable area ofhabitat. The idea of install-ing fire breaks in strategicareas of Burns Bog has

been raised by the panel inthe past. It would involvethe removal of trees, whichthe report noted couldresult in public concern.

Also since that 2005fire, Delta has been proac-tive in taking preventativemeasures to reduce therisk of fire, including ban-ning public access, ban-ning almost all vehiclesduring higher risk fireseason as well as regularpatrols. A fire manage-ment plan was also devel-oped by the Delta FireDepartment.

These guys, and gals, are legit.

The 200 or so riders thatwill roll into town this week-end to compete in the Tourde Delta aren’t household

names, but don’t let their anonymityfool you. The cyclists that will do battleon our streets over the next three daysare indeed world class athletes.

I recognize that you have to be ahardcore cycling fan for names likeLyne Bessette or Zach Bell to register, but be assured that every year there areseveral riders in that brightly-colouredsea of spandex that zips by at 60km/hthat are among the best in the world.

Bessette and Bell, who have starredat previous editions of the Tour deDelta, are both two-time CanadianOlympians. They are among a long listof riders to boast impressive credentialsin the race’s 16-year history, a direc-tory that includes national champions,Olympians and those that have com-peted on the grand tours of Europe.

Sometimes the Tour de Delta actsas a springboard for up-and-comingcyclists, which was the case a dozenor so years ago for the aforemen-tioned Bell, who was an unknownfrom the Yukon before winning here.Washington state native Tyler Farrarused our local series to launch a careerthat has seen him win stages of boththe Tour de France and Giro d’Italia.

The race also attracts those at theother end of their spectrum, ridersthat have reached the pinnacle of thesport and are now winding down theircareers. That’s an apt characteriza-tion of former three-time CanadianOlympians Gord Fraser and EricWohlberg, who gave the young guysall they could handle on the streets ofDelta in previous editions.

One rider that fits the bill this year isChris Horner, a 44-year-old Americanwho doesn’t appear to be slowing downdespite more than two decades as aprofessional cyclist. A 2012 Olympianand former top 10 finisher in the Tourde France, Horner holds the distinctionof being the oldest rider to win a stageof a grand tour when he captured a legof the Vuelta a Espana as a 41-year-oldin 2013.

It would be great to see him add aTour de Delta title to a resume thatincludes more than 70 victories world-wide, but even if that doesn’t come topass this weekend, you can bet Hornerand his colleagues will put on a heck ofa show.

Topnotchcycling

In the past few weeks oppo-sition to the Massey Bridge(if that’s what it will becalled) has becomemorevisible. It’s been there for

quite a while, but is becomingmore focused. Why?

Several say the bridge will notsolve a transportation problem, only move it down the road. Theysay the other parts of the roadnetwork such as Oak Street andits bridge will simply get morecongested. One study predictsthe addition of the bridge willincrease travel time as it willencourage even more vehicles totry to navigate the existing roads.

Richmond and all MetroVancouver mayors except Deltaare against it as the road net-work in Richmond will becomemore congested as more vehi-cles attempt to use the network. An improved intersection atSteveston Highway and Highway99 is only one piece of a muchmore complex network thatwould need to be expanded.

While a provincial studyshowed about two-thirds ofall traffic goes just betweenRichmond and Delta today, whatwill the trips look like in say 40years? Just think of how travel haschanged since 1976.

Many say the money— likely tobe more than $4 billion — needsto be focused on buses and tran-

sit. They do acknowledge, how-ever, that some expansion of theexisting capacity to cross the riveris needed. Here is where the ideasbecome numerous. The originalgovernment study did not look atadding another tunnel segmentof say two to four lanes, onlybridges.

It’s a bit difficult to trace theevolution as there is considerableevidence to suggest the decisionto do away with the tunnel wasmade behind closed doors asearly as 2007.

If so, we have been seriouslymisled.

At that time there were somemisgivings about reinforcingthe tunnel against earthquakes— despite earlier engineeringstudies recommending it. Therewere also serious talks going onwith the port about the need to

dredge the river bottom to allowfor deeper/bigger ships to go upthe river.

This was the time of GordonCampbell’s PPPs — public–pri-vate partnerships — that werethe talk of government. Used onthe Golden Ears and Port Mannbridges, the contractor paid forthe building of the bridge fromhis own finances and then gotrepaid from the tolls paid by theusers.

The bridge belongs to thegovernment but it doesn’t pay anickel for its operation— unlesstraffic on the bridge is overesti-mated and then the governmentpays the shortfall in tolls to thebridge builder. Today about$100 million per year is paid forthe miscalculations on the PortMann and Golden Ears bridges.Politically it’s great as they will tellyou no taxpayer money is neededfor the bridge.

The Massey Bridge is goingto be built the same way, andyou and I will likely pay $10 for around trip to go to Richmond orbeyond.

With the $4 billion (or muchmore) spent on the bridge, itwon’t buy even one new bus.Ian Robertson is a professional

engineer who has lived in SouthDelta for over three decades, andhas been following this story forseveral years.

Letters

Editor:Re: Mayor urged to

change course on casino, letter to the editor, July 1Having just read Boris

Lum’s letter, I feel theneed to comment as everyone of his statements iscloaked in troubling tones.

The premise of his letterappears to be that casi-nos and gambling are allthings bad. His “negativesocial and moral impacts, dirty revenue, creating aPotterville, and no cityworldwide has ever ben-efitted from gambling”statements are over dra-matic and not true.

Most people gamble.

Some a little, some a lot. They may enjoy lotto-typegames, betting on sportingevents, horse race wager-ing or the games offeredin casinos. I purchaselotto tickets weekly andoccasionally wager onthe horse races at FraserDowns and Hastings, along with a rare bet onSanta Anita and Del Marhorse races. I am not acasino patron.

My wife, on the otherhand, likes to play thecasino’s one-armed ban-dits.

You cannot controlanyone’s “social or moralbehaviour” until the

results of their actions aredeemed illegal. Canadais a free country. We canmake choices. Casinos arehighly regulated govern-ment approved operationsand the money returned tothe venue city can hardlybe considered “dirty rev-enue.”

It makes no sense hav-ing your populace travelto a nearby city to gamble, contributing to their rev-enue stream. Keep it athome.

Lum’s reference to “cre-ating Potterville” is utternonsense. Does he classifymost B.C. cities, includ-ing Vancouver, Richmond,

Surrey, Kelowna andKamloops, as Pottervillesas they all have casinos?

His comment that “nocity worldwide has everbenefitted from gambling”must come as a completeshock to the B.C. mayorsand councils lining up tospend their share of gam-bling generated revenue.

In closing, I am notsupportive of his positionon this issue and do notbelieve that a majority ofresidents in South Deltawould support it either.Hopefully, common sensewill prevail and a localcasino is in my future.

Editor:Ever since God placed

Adam and Eve in theGarden of Eden, Adamand his progeny havedevised various waysthat in their opinion havemade life more bearableand to some extent enjoy-able.

For the most part, success was the result;however, that foregoingsuccess took a nosedivea couple of decades agowhen one of Adam’s kinstumbled on the idea of

how to achieve somethingby doing the opposite ofwhat others consideredworthwhile.

The wheel of inven-tion turned and somehowthe lowly grass rake wasdeemed to be evil andhad to be replaced with acontraption that shattered— and continues to shat-ter — the quietude of anycomfortable area to thepoint of destroying one’ssensitive hearing.

Of course, most modernday occupiers of God’s

world know that in timespast, the task of gatheringfallen leaves was a simpleone: get the appropriaterake, engage in a smallamount of physical exer-cise and rake the appar-ently offending leavesinto a nice pile for futuredisposal.

Now, however, that kinof Adam who stumbledupon a method of scat-tering those same leaveshither and yon and chas-ing them all around asthey rush here and there

willy-nilly came up with acontraption that not onlyruins the quietude of anyneighbourhood but alsothreatens the air thoseneighbours breathe.

Moreover, the usersof such a devilish deviceneed to wear ear protec-tion to avoid possiblehearing loss and that, inand of itself, is a blackmark against their use.

Question: Are leaf blow-ers necessary? Answer:No.

SM Cruickshank

Editor:Re: Public input sought

on port’s land purchases,June 22

As reported in theOptimist, the Port ofVancouver is buyingup parcels of land inRichmond and Delta toadd to the land holdingsit already has, some ofwhich are agriculturallyzoned. Seems the port isrelying more and moreon renting lands andassets rather than focus-ing on its core businessof running a sustainableport.

CEO Robin Silvestersays they are buyingland for warehouses andlogistics infrastructure.Trouble is that we do notneed more warehousesclose to the marine ter-minals. The supply chaindoes not need nor requireoff-dock facilities close tothe marine terminals.

In fact, nearly all othermajor container termi-nals around the worlduse some form of inlandterminal. Many also userail rather than truck totake containers from the

marine terminal to off-dock facilities.

Why does Port ofVancouver not do thesame? Could it be to pro-tect the vested interests ofstakeholders? With only10 per cent of contain-ers coming to the portthat are destined for theLower Mainland, there isno reason to have all theoff-dock facilities here.

In fact, they can beelsewhere in B.C. or inAlberta. Will we get rid ofall local off-dock facili-ties? No, but we do notneed to add more.

We need a port man-agement and board thatrecognizes that our envi-ronment and communi-ties are precious and theenvy of many. We simplycannot afford to havethe Port of Vancouvercontinue to gobble upland—much of it valu-able farmland, wetlandsand ecosystems withhuge biodiversity — foruses that run counter tothe way in which almostevery other port aroundthe world does business.

Editor:With Canada’s 150th

birthday one yearfrom now in 2017, let’sdecide to rid ourselves ofthe clichéd banality ofnaming the country’sanniversary CanadaDay and instead celebrateConfederation Day to helpremind us of our nation’straditional heritage andhistorical foundation.

As a sad manifestationof the intense insecu-rity that has developedwith regard to our his-

torical national identity, the Canada Act in 1982changed Canada’s birth-day from Dominion Day tothe more politically palat-able moniker of CanadaDay, lest we forget who weare and where we are.

Secure in who theyare, other countries donot refer to their nation-al days as America Day orFrance Day or Italy Day.

National days com-memorate and celebratehistorical achievement. The French people gave

birth to their nationon July 14, 1789, and cel-ebrate it as Bastille Day.Americans gave birth toa new nation on July 4,1776, and celebrate it asIndependence Day.

Unlike the revolutionarybeginnings of France andAmerica, Canada beganits devolutionary journeyto self-government on July1, 1867 as the federalDominion of Canada withthe confederation ofthe three colonies ofBritish North America

into the new provincesof Ontario, Quebec, NewBrunswick and NovaScotia.

So for 2017, let’s resolveto mark Canada’s birthdayas Confederation Day.

Today,149 yearslater, confedera-tion — the “comingtogether” of all of Canada— remains our nation-al challenge, requiringrenewed effort and com-mitment from all of usall year round.

You know what I amtalking about. Everybodyis wondering whether weare in a housing bubbleand if so, whether it willburst or not, what affectreplacing the tunnel andall the development at theTFN will have on houseprices in South Delta, howmuch foreign investmentis affecting the Vancouvermarket and on and on.

We don’t know whetherto sell, buy, rent or movesomewhere cheaper. Thereis tremendous uncertaintyabout timing. What if I buynow and the market col-lapses? What if I don’t buyand prices just keep climb-ing? What if I don’t selland the bottom drops out? What if I do sell and payrent while watching myold house soar in value?

The uncertainty consumesus.

I can’t predict the hous-ing market. But I can pre-dict this — everyone read-ing this is going to die. Weare all in a life-bubble thatis some day going to burst.

I once heard Canadiansinger/songwriter James

Keelaghan say it this way:“A nephew once asked

me when he was quiteyoung,

Who dies? I said,‘Everyone dies’

No use denying it, oneday you’re done,

Oh, everyone dies.”Jesus put that reality in

perspective: “What goodwill it be for someone togain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Orwhat can anyone give inexchange for their soul?”(Matthew 16:26, NIV)

In other words, whatgood is it if we win big inthe housing bubble andlose it all in the life bub-ble?

Serge Alternês,co-author of LiveSouls: Citizensand Volunteers ofCivil War Spain,

will sign copies of his bookduring a meet-and-greetat Black Bond Books inLadner on Sunday, July 17.Live Souls features the

memoir of Alternês’ father,Alec Wainman, a medi-cal volunteer during theSpanish Civil War, alongwith 210 of his photo-graphs. The photographs—many of which havenever been seen before —were long thought to belost but were recovered inexcellent condition.

Alternês was born andraised in Vancouver, andcompleted his degree atUBC. Discovering themissing collection of hisfather’s photos after yearsof searching, he was deter-mined to bring them andhis father’s story to thepublic.

“In Spain, following theFranco dictatorship andthe amnesty law, much of

the historyof the CivilWar andthe SpanishRepublicstill remainslargely bur-ied,” saysAlternês.“Live Soulswas madeto preservethis mem-ory.”

Heexplainshow in the spring of 1975,Wainman was contactedto publish 200 photo-graphs from his collectionof 1,650 photographs ofCivil War Spain. He thensent the complete col-lection of negatives toLondon, England, for aforthcoming book on theInternational Brigades.Unfortunately, publicationnever happened. At thatpoint, however, Wainmanstarted writing his ownmemoirs, which are nowpublished in Live Souls.

Alternês says in 2013

he was able to contact aperson who had corre-sponded with his fatherabout the publication ofthe photographs.

“Again, by chance, shehad rescued Alec’s photocollection from the homeof a retired, and sincedeceased, Soho publisher, and had stored and pre-served the collection in asuitcase,” he says.

Alternês currentlydivides his time betweenVancouver and Europein the promotion of LiveSouls and exhibitions ofthis photo collection.

In light of this yearmarking the 80th anni-versary of the begin-ning of the Spanish CivilWar, he will also discussVancouver’s importantconnections to the warand explain how theseevents transformed socialawareness, the arts and

medicine in the Westernworld. The book signingevent goes from 1 to 3 p.m.

There are a lotof ways we cansabotage ourown health. Some ways we

consciously do, such asFriday night drinks andnachos, while others wearen’t aware have negativeeffects to our health.

Here are 11 that youmay not know have harm-ful and long-term effectsto our health and well-being:

1.Not getting enoughsleep. Sleep deprivationcan lead to a higher riskof health problems likehigh blood pressure, heartdisease and stroke. It canalso lead to weight gain,

depression, memory prob-lems and moodiness.

Sleep deprivation isused as a form of torturefor a reason. It’s bad forthe body, physically andmentally.

Find out howmuchsleep you need by keepinga sleep journal for a week. For seven days turn off thealarm clock and go to bedonly when you are tiredand get out of bed as soonas you open your eyes inthe morning. At the endof the seven days, aver-age out howmany hoursa night you were sleeping. This average is what yourbody needs; it’s your natu-ral sleep pattern.

2. Slouching. Bad pos-ture, over time, can take aserious toll on your spine, shoulders, hips and knees.Offset this by focusing onthese muscles when inthe gym: middle trape-zius muscles, the rotatorcuff, the rear deltoids, theglutes and the low back.

3.Don’t eat kale. Or anyother vegetable for thatmatter. Veggies providenutrients that are vital forthe health and mainte-

nance of your body. And if you have young

children - start themyoung. Studies have shownthat kids who eat a lot offruit and vegetables whenthey are young tend tocontinue these eating hab-its when they’re adults. Somy loving husband’s verybad eating habits? I blameon his mother.

4. Stress over every-thing. Most things in lifeare not a big deal, we justmake them into a big deal.Continuously do this andwe increase our chancesof heart disease, diabetesand even cancer.

I cannot stress enough(haha, no pun intended…well, it was kinda intend-ed) the importance ofdoing yoga and meditatingdaily. These activities canchange lives. I know, theychanged mine.

5.Not lifting heavythings. My mission in lifeis to get every woman onthis planet lifting weights.I know, big goal, butweight training is essentialfor both weight loss andweight maintenance, aswell as quality of life.

This goes the same forthe men too. Add threeto four strength trainingworkouts into your weekand start seeing the resultsin as quick as two weeks.

6. Adding to your muffintop. Measure your waist:if it’s 34 inches or greater(female), or 40 inches andgreater (men), you arefour times more likely ofdeveloping diabetes, threetimes more likely to havehigh blood pressure andtwo times more likely tohave heart disease thanthose whose waists meas-ure smaller.

7. Eating low carb, lowfat or low anything. Ourbodies need carbohydrates(it’s the fuel of choice forthe brain and the mus-cles), as well as healthyfats. Add whole grains, starchy vegetables andhealthy fats from foodssuch as salmon, avoca-dos, nuts, eggs, olive oiland coconut oil on a dailybasis.

8.Not drinking enoughwater. Dehydration is atotal buzz kill for the body. For one, it can presentitself as hunger —mak-

ing us eat more when wereally should be sippingmore and second it can killa workout.

In fact, a two per centdehydration rate will causeyou to perform 20 per centless than if 100 per centhydrated. That’s a hugedecrease in results whentraining.

9. You choose sea saltover table salt. Sea salt, and all those other fancysalts on the market aregreat, however they don’tcontain iodine, which is akey element for our thy-roid. Only good ol’ tablesalt does.

A healthy thyroid willkeep our metabolismsrunning along smoothlyand that in turn keepsour waistlines in check.Add regular table salt toyour diet and you can alsoget iodine from seaweed(hello sushi!), cod, shrimpand eggs.

10. You can’t touch yourtoes. The older we get, themore inflexible our tissuebecomes and this will setus up for pain and injury.

As we age our muscletissue and connective tis-

sue loses water. Add a sed-entary lifestyle and a jobthat has you in one posi-tion for most the day (suchas sitting behind a desk),and you have the perfectstorm. Avoid this stormby practicing some sortof stretching and mobilitywork on a daily basis.

11. You eat alone. Beingby yourself on a regu-lar basis is bad for yourhealth. A recent study pub-lished in the Perspectivesin Psychological Sciencefound being connected toothers was associated witha longer life.

They found that loneli-ness increased a person’srisk of death by 26 per centand was also linked toobesity, substance abuse, mental health disordersand violence or injury.

Connect with lovedones on a daily basis, make plans with friendson a weekly basis andvolunteer to keep yourselfconnected to your fellowhuman beings.PJ Wren is a local fitness

Visual art is what wesee, right? But how impor-tant is visual art in helpingus understand somethingwe don’t at first compre-hend? A fresh idea, a total-ly different approach to adifficult problem, a radicalpolitical idea?

The vibrant work dis-played regularly by SouthDelta Artists Guild mem-bers at Tsawwassen’sGallery 1710 puts each art-ist’s original mind and tal-ent on show, as in the cur-rent Summer Showcase, running through Aug. 1.Is the artist presenting aquiet contemplative water-colour, like Enja Jorge orAnn Hilton, or exploringenergetic multi-surfacedpaintings like Jan Rankinor Sandra Taylor? A con-nection is on offer.

Artist Nancy Dean, cur-rently serving her secondterm as guild president, is

also an interior designerand excellent photog-rapher whose interestscomplement each otherwell. Cityscapes particu-larly attract her, and herstriking interpretations ofVancouver are popular.Strong angles, deep shad-ows and intense coloursprovide motifs, whileVancouver’s rain bringsvivid night street andwater reflections to put oncanvas.

An award-winningTsawwassen artist, shealso paints local and for-eign landscapes, workingin acrylic.

Serving with Dean onthe new board of direc-tors are: Jan Rankin (vicepresident), Rod Winning(past president and com-munications), MaryEllen Bullock (treasurer),Judith Turner (member-ship), Lynne Mackenzie(workshops), GloriaMalaka (outside venues),Sandra Taylor (gallery),

Liette Kjorvel (schedul-ing) and directors at largeBeverly Brazier, Al Gejdos,Barbara Lynch and HilaryMatson.

At the AGM, the out-standing long-time serviceof Lorna Wladickuk astreasurer was recognizedby her appointment asan honourary member. In presenting her finaldetailed financial report, she noted the guild is inexcellent standing, andthe cost of upcoming fallworkshops will thereforebe reduced.

Following SummerShowcase, the next exhibitand sale, Celebration, willrun Aug. 4 to 28. The gal-lery will continue to beopen Thursday to Sunday,11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Drop-in programs runall summer, Tuesday toFriday, in the studio/work-shop at Gallery 1710.

I have been surrounded by horses since I was born. My family has ownedand operated Greystone Stables in Delta, BC since 1983. Consequently,I have been fortunate to enjoy having horses ‘in my back yard’.

For over a decade I was on the customer service team at Roddick’s Feedand Tack store. When organizational changes resulted in the closing of thetack store I saw an opportunity… and the idea of Equine Essentials Tackand Laundry Services was born.

My goal is to provide horses and riders with qulaity equestrian productsand laundry services. The shop is a friendly place where you areencouraged to browse and enjoy the displays of grooming supplies, apparel for horses and riders, leather goods and an assortment ofsupplements and treats. Equine Essentials offers a selection of tack, apparel and grooming supplies from quality brands.

The Delta Islanders seta new franchise record forregular season wins — andthey didn’t even have totake the floor in their finalgame to accomplish thefeat.

Late Tuesday night, the B.C. Junior AmateurLacrosse League (BCJALL)announced that the

Wednesday night homegame between theIslanders and NanaimoTimbermen was cancelled.

Islanders assistant gen-eral manager and headcoach Greg Rennie toldtheOptimistWednesdayafternoon that Nanaimoforfeited the game due tolack of player availability. The forfeit gave Delta its15th win of the season andclinched second place in

the league standings.“A lot of positives mov-

ing forward and trying tobreak new ground for theIslanders,” said Rennie.“We have a record-settingseason, now we want toadvance further in theplayoffs and hopefully aberth in the Minto Cup.”

Also Wednesday, theleague announced thedates for the best-of-threewildcard playoff between

the Langley Thunder andPort Coquitlam Saints— July 12, 14 and an ifnecessary game on July 15.

The first-placeCoquitlam Adanacs willget the winner of thewildcard playoff in onesemi-final series whilethe Islanders will get NewWest Salmonbellies in theother semi-final.

The series will starteither Saturday, July 16 or

Sunday, July 17 in Deltaonce the league approvesthe series dates, which isexpected in the next fewdays.

“We want to take advan-tage of a good opportunityand that’s our team’s atti-tude right now,” he said.“We’re not looking pastNewWest. We are onlyfocused on NewWest andthe opportunity that lieswith them.”

Emma Boyd is lookingto repeat her gold-medalwinning performance thisweekend in Sidney.

The 15-year-oldTsawwassen Lawn BowlingClub member is set tocompete in the 2016 juniorprovincial championshipsand is out to defend thetitle she won last year.Competition starts todayand wraps up Sundaymorning.

“It is very exciting. It’sgoing to be hard. Thereare a lot of good players, but I’m just excited for thechallenge,” she said. “I’mhoping for a lot of goodgames. It’s different everysingle game. I’ve played acouple of these girls threeyears in a row and I’vewon and they’ve won, soit’s hard to gauge.”

The provincials marktwo big months of compe-tition for Boyd as she plansto also compete in theU25 nationals in August inNorth Vancouver.

After her gold-medalwin last year at provincials, she qualified for her firstnationals in Saskatoon, calling it a “fun experi-ence.”

Her grandmother MaryHargreaves, who is theTsawwassen Lawn BowlingClub junior coach andVancouver and District

junior director, introducedher to the game.

“I started when I was 10.My grandma brought meout and I thought it was afun game and somethingthat I could do with her,”Boyd recalled.

“But as soon as I sawother girls winning andgetting the chance to travelto places like Australia,I thought that was reallycool. That’s what I wantto do— travel all over theworld playing the sportthat I love.”

Naturally, Hargreavesis proud of her grand-daughter and what she hasaccomplished.

“We have a little bit ofhistory repeating itself Ithink,” Hargreaves said.“Our world bronze medal-ist Pricilla Westlake wasmentored by her grand-mother Marg Westlakeand I’m doing the samewith Emma. There are 14juniors at our club, whichis quite a high number. Our club has been a leaderreally in getting juniorsinto the game.”

Hargreaves said it isimportant to have youngpeople involved in lawnbowling to ensure thedevelopment of the gamecontinues.

“If we do not get youngpeople coming along, youcan’t sustain the life ofthe game,” she said. “Theamount of success that we

have had with our youngjuniors and their grand-mothers bringing them

along, for instance, hasbeen tremendous. As aclub we have made a com-

mitment to our junior pro-gram and the results speakfor themselves.”

A remarkable 40-yearrun as an executive, including the last 16 asBaseball Canada presi-dent, has come to an endfor Ray Carter.

The longtimeTsawwassen resident offi-cially stepped down at lastmonth’s Baseball CanadaAGM in Toronto, makingway for New Brunswick’sJason Dickson. Carter’stenure was longer thanany of the previous nineBaseball Canada presi-dents.

“It’s a bittersweet feel-ing,” said Carter. “Baseballhas been a big part of mylife for 40 years, includ-ing the 16 as president ofBaseball Canada, but it’stime to let somebody elsehave a crack at it.

“I know Jason will be agreat leader,” said Carter.“The key (to success) is tobe patient, listen to peopleand lead the orchestra, and great things will hap-pen for Baseball Canada.”

Carter began his asso-ciation with the summerpastime over 40 years agoas a volunteer coach withTsawwassen AmateurBaseball.

“I didn’t even have akid on the team, but a co-worker asked me to helphim coach,” he explained.“Before you know it I wason the league executive.”

In 1988, Carter becamepresident of B.C. MinorBaseball, a position hewould hold until 1990when he became presi-dent of what is now knownas Baseball BC. The sameyear he became presidentof B.C. Minor, he becamethe vice-president ofBaseball Canada and wasimmediately involved withseveral committees withinthe organization. In 2000,he was elected presidentof Baseball Canada.

A man who cares deeplyabout the game from thegrassroots level right upto the national teamsprogram, Carter saw hisrole as an opportunity togrow the game and effect

change within the sport, for the better.

“I thought there was avoid to fill at the nationallevel when I started (mypresidency),” said Carter.“I didn’t feel that the(baseball) season was long

enough, I thought thereshould be more expertiseavailable to coaches andI didn’t think that ath-letes were getting all ofthe resources available tobecome better players.”

During Carter’s

presidency, he has seenCanada’s world ranking gofrom outside of the top 10to an all-time high of sixthand among the world’spowers of the game.

He has also witnessedbaseball in Canadabecomemore inclusive asprograms for female play-ers have grown, includingthe implementation ofthe successful Women’sNational Team program.

Baseball Canadahas also adopted theChallenger Baseball pro-gram to give children withcognitive or physical dis-abilities an opportunity toenjoy the thrill of playingbaseball and being partof a team. On the grass-roots side, the DQ RallyCap program for initiationplayers has grown to thepoint where it now has anational sponsor.

“I’m not saying I wassolely responsible, but itmakes me proud knowingthat I was part of a groupthat led Baseball Canadato where it is today,” addedCarter. “I’ve always been a

proponent of finding theright people to put in placeand letting them do theirjob.”

It’s the people, playersand coaches that he’s metat these events that he’llremember the most.

“All of the players thatplay with the nationalteams are great baseballplayers but at the end ofthe day they’re great peo-ple. I love them all.”

Although Carter is step-ping away from his role aspresident, he will neverremove himself from base-ball, as he just loves thegame and the people asso-ciated with it too much.

“Just because I’m notpresident anymore doesn’tmean I can’t pick up a rakeand rake a field,” said theman who has a baseballfield named after him inTsawwassen. “If anybodyneeds me to sit on a com-mittee or anything likethat, I’m here. I’m not fin-ished yet.”

Carter was inductedinto the Delta Sports Hallof Fame back in 2006.
