WELCOME. BUSINESS

ROZ BIRD COMMERCIAL DIRECTOR

It is great to be able to announce the names of the first two companies to take our new industrial units at Silverstone Park.

MLL Telecom and Twintec Baumot operate in very different high-tech sectors but clearly both have identified the value of developing their business in new premises, within the Enterprise Zone at Silverstone Park.

Their presence adds diversity to the range of high-tech activity at the estate and there are more announcements to come as we are currently in detailed discussions with a number of companies about the remaining units. Current availability includes units ranging in size from 5,000 sq ft to 30,000 sq ft.

We are dedicating our autumn newsletter’s front cover to Delta Motorsport and its excellent work in the world of electric vehicles (see page 8) – another success story for a high-tech company based at Silverstone Park.

Becoming an established name in the automotive supply chain is the aspiration of many small companies and it was great to meet so many of them at our most recent Metrology Network event where JRM Group’s Sally Povolotsky – also ex-Jaguar Land Rover – gave an excellent presentation (see pages 4-5).

Meanwhile we’re delighted to confirm our partnership with the Silverstone Technology Cluster (STC) at Birmingham NEC’s forthcoming Advanced Engineering Show (1-2 Nov). The technologies represented at the event are wide ranging and leading edge, and so it is right that Silverstone Park is supporting the STC to host the event’s VIP Lounge this year.

I encourage you to attend and benefit from the networking space. Please do visit the show, join us at the VIP Lounge and hopefully do some great business. See you there!

SILVERSTONE TECHNOLOGY CLUSTER TO HOST ADVANCED ENGINEERING SHOW’S VIP LOUNGESilverstone Technology Cluster in association with Silverstone Park will have a major presence at this year’s Advanced Engineering Show (Weds 1/Thurs 2 November) as hosts of the event’s VIP Lounge.

The Silverstone Technology Cluster VIP Lounge will be a focal point of the Show at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre – the UK’s largest annual gathering of advanced engineering professionals.

Each of the STC’s founding members as well as its CEO Pim van Baarsen and Silverstone Park Commercial Director Roz Bird will be present at the Lounge on both days. The Lounge will act as an ideal location for figures from all corners of the advanced engineering spectrum to network.

Alison Willis, Divisional Director for the Show’s organiser Easyfairs commented: “We are delighted to welcome the Silverstone Technology Cluster, in association with Silverstone Park, as key partners at this year’s Advanced Engineering.

“A Silverstone Technology Cluster VIP Lounge on the show floor fits perfectly with Advanced Engineering’s growing focus on promoting innovation and facilitating networking between industry decision makers and innovators.”

And said Roz Bird: “Silverstone Park and the Silverstone Technology Cluster are all about creating opportunities for high-tech networking and the development of a community of mutual regard, where individuals can come together to talk and explore new business ideas.

“Therefore sponsoring and supporting the VIP Lounge at the Advanced Engineering Show helps us to continue that work and ultimately will, I hope, help companies to grow their businesses.”

More start-up companies and SMEs have praised the Silverstone Metrology Network following its latest event in which senior engineering industry figure Sally Povolotsky provided a capacity audience with a fascinating insight into best practices in the supply chain world.

Sally is Commercial Director for Northants-based advanced engineering company JRM Group which has evolved from success in both national and international motorsport to become a much respected Tier 1 supplier to six automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).

Topics she covered included: Joining the supply chain/becoming a Tier 1 supplier; ‘Mission Creep’ – managing OEMs; the complexities of operating as a ‘white brand’ company; the importance of metrology and ISO.

Niche Vehicle Network returns for third consecutive yearAnother capacity audience of niche vehicle manufacturers, specialist technology and design and engineering companies is expected at Silverstone Park in late November when the influential Niche Vehicle Network association’s Members Forum returns for a third consecutive year.

Last year, as in 2015, the NVN membership (which now totals over 800) voted unanimously on the spot to the event being hosted again at the high-tech business estate.

This year’s fixture will be on Weds 29 November (TBC) – as before inside the Silverstone University Technology College’s auditorium.

A highlight of the fast-paced event includes member companies being given the stage for just four minutes each to promote their specialities to the audience in between a number of open networking sessions.

I don’t think we could have asked for a better networking event. The speaker was fantastic and the people are so friendly. There is definite value from just stepping into the room.Tristan Allen, Room44.co.uk

I go to many networking events and this is by far and away one of the very best – on a par with the Open University. If you are serious about networking and you are serious about meeting good people then you have got to come to this.Stuart Moore, CEO, Manton Engineering

Sally commented: “This has been a very worthwhile event. People from like-minded industries and sectors – some of which on paper might seem far apart – can come together and realise that actually they all have something in common. From there they can connect and network and end up with a one-stop shop solution.”

She added: “I’ve met four companies today I know I’ll be in touch with in the next few weeks and could actively do business with. Yes, JRM could be the break they’ve been looking for as supply chain companies but vice-versa – they’ve definitely got things that I need.”

Sally became the fourth high-profile guest speaker at the Network’s events following appearances from former Lockheed Martin (UK) CEO Stephen Ball, RML Group’s Commercial Director Simon Holloway and Red Bull Racing’s Senior Technical Partnership Manager Zoe Chilton.

Each event takes place inside the Silverstone Park Metrology Facility – managed by Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence. It is the only dedicated sub-contract inspection metrology facility in the UK.

The STC has confirmed a number of up-coming events firmly in keeping with its three primary strands of promotion, support and thought leadership for the high-tech region around Silverstone…

STC events diary taking shape

The increasing intrigue and interest surrounding the STC means we already have a further 20 events we are working on up to December 2018. These will be to keep industry fully up to speed with the STC’s progress, provide access to our SIGs and members’ expertise and focus on other key areas such as business growth and access to finance.Pim van Baarsen, CEO, Silverstone Technology Cluster

Undoubtedly groups like these can prove influential and have the potential to help shape Government policy.

We want the Silverstone Technology Cluster to be strong on thought leadership and ensure, quite rightly, that the region is seen as a leader for the UK in these areas of expertise.Pim van Baarsen, CEO, Silverstone Technology Cluster

TECHNOLOGY CLUSTER’S RAPID GROWTH CONTINUES WITH LAUNCH OF NEW SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPSThe Silverstone Technology Cluster continues to move at speed with a number of high-profile engineering names now set to spearhead two new special interest groups (SIGs) focusing on Digital/Advanced Manufacturing (DAM) and Autonomous, Connected, Electrified & Shared (ACES) vehicles technologies.

Pim commented: “We’ve already had a terrific response to both these new SIGS and ACES in particular is a really hot topic at the moment…

“It’s important to re-emphasise that we want to hear from SMEs and start-up companies just as much as we do the larger organisations.”

To re-cap STC is the not for profit company launched in December 2016 to promote the region within an hour’s radius of Silverstone – identified in a high profile SQW report as being home to around 4,000 companies with exceptional capabilities in high-tech engineering and recognised by the UK government as having ‘latent potential’.

Silverstone Park developer MEPC has been integral to the STC story, having originally worked with Barclays to lead the commissioning of the SQW report while continuing to grow the high-tech business estate at the heart of the Cluster.

Exhaust after treatment designer and manufacturer Twintec Baumot has chosen to re-locate its UK headquarters – in essence a ‘development and application centre’ – in new 8,000 sq ft premises at the high-tech business estate.

Alan Martin, a senior technical consultant to TB, explained. “All our material handling and customer support will be done from here but the premises also give us the ability to undertake 3D space measurement and 3D prototype printing. This is where all our prototype and pre-test work will be carried out.”

TB has emerged as a ‘preferred supplier’ to Transport for London and is now in advanced talks with main bus operators in the capital and other cities with Low Emission Zones (LEZs).

The company’s technology in effect turns liquid ammonia (known as AdBlue) in commercial vehicles’ exhaust systems into a gas, thereby preventing crystallisation.

Alan said: “The beauty of our system is it’s much more compact than our competitors. Ultimately it can reduce NOx by more than 98% and we have the figures to prove it.”

And he added: “The Silverstone region gives us the ability to source good electronics technicians.

“London was attractive but not the best place to draw on good technicians. That’s the strength of this region – it is a great skills centre.”

Vehicle exhaust treatment technology that could slash some city centre public transport pollution by more than 95 per cent is to be designed, manufactured and tested at new premises at Silverstone Park.

Ariel’s new 1180bhp, four-wheel-drive electric two-seater ‘P40’ was unveiled at August’s Low Carbon Vehicles show and is reportedly capable of accelerating from 0-60mph in 2.4 seconds and 0-150mph in 7.8 seconds. Torque peak will be a barely believable 1,329 lb ft.

Much of that shattering performance is down to highly complex technology derived by Silverstone Park-based low carbon vehicle specialist Delta Motorsport – this includes a high power 42kWh liquid-cooled battery.

Delta’s Managing Director Simon Dowson explained: “We’ve been responsible for the battery system, the charging element of the battery, the range extender and the powertrain control which includes torque vectoring – that is the independent control of torque at each individual wheel to give improved handling, traction control and stability control.

He added: “The most difficult thing to overcome was the car’s very tightly packed large battery system to cope with the track based duty cycle (TBDC) which is particularly aggressive compared to a normal road drive cycle.”

Cutting edge electric vehicle technology designed and developed at Silverstone Park has been used to help create one of the world’s fastest accelerating and most advanced supercars.

Telecoms expert MLL latest high-tech company to arrive

BUSINESS

Space hopper racing was the latest discipline to be added to Silverstone Park’s annual sports day – won by one of the high-tech business estate’s newest companies, MLL Telecom.

The fun event was the latest activity for companies on the Park to enjoy – all part of estate developer MEPC’s busy social calendar which aims to motivate staff and develop a community of mutual regard.

World leading hybrid technology company Flybrid and legendary supercar manufacturer Porsche – both of which are based at the estate – were gallant runners-up in the event which also included wheelbarrow, three-legged, sack, and egg and spoon races, penalty shoot-outs, welly wanging and tug-of-war.

See page 12 for a full list of up-coming social events for companies at Silverstone Park.

Winning start for new company MLL

MLL, a leading provider of secure managed network services to many of telecommunications’ biggest names, has chosen new industrial units at Silverstone Park to base one of its most important technical nerve centres.

Silverstone Park based product lifecycle management (PLM) specialist Design Rule has been appointed by global engineering company Meggitt’s UK and Swiss divisions to oversee a major restructuring of its document archive.

Major Meggitt & Morgan contracts for PLM ace Design Rule

The massive project relied on Design Rule’s expertise in ENOVIA software and was implemented from the company’s offices at Silverstone Park’s Innovation Centre.

Meggitt specialises in extreme environment products and sub-systems for the defence, aerospace and energy industries which command very strict design, test and compliance requirements.

Meggitt calculated it had one million documents across 15,000 folders to sort – these having been built up by teams dotted around the world over the past 40 years!

Design Rule’s partnership with French-Swiss PLM and computer aided design giant Visiativ – both are added value re-sellers of Dassault Systèmes which developed the ENOVIA platform – played a crucial role.

“The partnership with Visiativ really made a difference because it allowed us to take advantage of ENOVIA’s flexibility to adapt the software to each division’s culture, structure and way of doing things,” said Design Rule’s Managing Director Bob Hillier.

The Meggitt contract is another feather in Design Rule’s cap – in July it was appointed by niche British sportscar manufacturer Morgan Motors to manage a PLM upgrade to the Dassault Systèmes 3DEXPERIENCE platform from SmarTeam.

The company’s 5,500 sq ft premises are part of a 125,000 sq ft development of industrial/workshop units with Enterprise Zone status (see page 11).

MLL is already contracted by mobile service giants Vodafone, O2 and EE to ensure they can deliver strong and uninterrupted signal. Other major household names such as Virgin Media and BT as well as local authorities, police forces and even the NHS are also among its customer base.

MLL’s Operations Support Manager Chris Stratton said: “To be given security clearance to go on the NHS framework is a big deal and it required us to achieve ‘HSCN’ certification – we’re among the very first to achieve that.”

MLL’s technical capabilities make it an expert in creating signal in remote areas.

Chris explained: “We are at the cutting edge of getting connectivity where it doesn’t exist at the moment and a lot of being able to sustain that will be down to our new base at Silverstone Park.”

The appeal of Silverstone is that it is a prestigious and very central location with good transport links as we are a UK nationwide business.Chris Stratton, Operations Support Manager, MLL

Twintec Baumot and leading telecoms company MLL (see opposite and page 9) are the first two companies to be officially announced as having located to new premises at Silverstone Park – part of a 125,000 sq ft of industrial/workshop units constructed by the high-tech business estate’s developer MEPC.

In fact four companies have moved in to the units within the first six months of their completion. The other two will be announced soon.

MEPC is also in detailed discussions about many of the remaining units which range in size from 5,000 sq ft to 30,000 sq ft and which are all under one roof. A number however still remain available to let.

Significantly the development has been awarded Enterprise Zone status by the UK government – this can provide high-tech and manufacturing companies looking to invest and grow with business ratves relief of up to £55,000 per annum for the next five years.

It’s fair to say that Michael’s life experiences – which include a bizarre moment with Prince Charles – make him an ideal fit for the job!

Michael’s role includes overseeing utilities across the site, legal compliance, security, health and safety, testing of building services and close liaison with occupiers and stakeholders.

“It is non-stop and I really like that,” he says. “There’s also a lot of variety and the people are driven which spurs everyone on…”

A mechanical and electric design engineer by trade, Michael later moved into facilities management roles for local authorities, schools and colleges and then ran his own marine craft hire business on the River Thames!

He’s also a foster parent and a long-serving Scout leader with involvement in several Royal events. However a chance encounter in a hospital lift with Prince Charles was a shock!

“That was a bit surreal – the door opened, there he was with his security people and it was ‘Good morning, Sir!’ and off I went. One of those quirkier moments in life…”
