* Minority is everyone other than non-Hispanic white alone

Page 28: DEMOGRAPHIC DIVERSITY IN MARYLAND

Planning.Maryland.gov

• All of Maryland’s population growth since 2000 has been due to growth in the minority population

• Maryland is one of the most diverse states in the U.S. and is moving to being majority-minority

• Minority population growth has been strong throughout most of Maryland, particularly in the outer suburban counties

SUMMARY

Page 29: DEMOGRAPHIC DIVERSITY IN MARYLAND

Planning.Maryland.gov

• A major reason for the growth of the minority population in Maryland has been an increasing foreign born population

• As Maryland becomes more diverse it also is becoming older, as evidenced by the increasing share of the elderly.

• Minority populations tend to be younger, however, with a majority-minority status for those under 40.

SUMMARY

Page 30: DEMOGRAPHIC DIVERSITY IN MARYLAND

Planning.Maryland.gov

IMPLICATIONS

• Increasing diversity: Given the age structure of minorities and non-Hispanic whites, growth in K-12 as well as the labor force in the coming decades will be dominated by minorities

• There will be a need to ensure that educational and job opportunities are accessible to all if Maryland is to effectively compete in the world economy
