Brave Combo expands group for FestivalBy Kit KingFor the Denton Record-Chronicle
As if Denton’s Brave Combodoesn’t offer enough magic asthey close the Denton Arts &Jazz Festival each year, they’veadded a bonus, expanding thequintet to include JenniferMcLaughlin and DannyJerabek.
“We got rained out last year,”Carl Finch, founder and gui-tarist for the group said. “Sowe’re going to add somethingextra to the show this year.”
Hometown heros, BraveCombo always has audiencesdoing the chicken dance, thehokey pokey and the polka. They are an integral part of theDenton scene, not just formusic, but for their many con-tributions to the community.
Many in Denton, however, may not realize their interna-tional status. The band haswon two Grammy Awards andbeen nominated for their work7 times. They provided musicfor numerous films, includingFools Rush In, The Personals,True Stories and more.
TV audiences saw theiravatars on The Simpsons, heard their music on UglyBetty and Bakersfield PD and
PBS’s first animated series, Asthe Wrench Turns, based onthe popular Click and Clackautomotive columns and radioshow.
Next up, they hope, is an ani-mated series, Taxi Dog, basedon a children’s book about aNew York taxi driver whofound a dog. “We have our fin-gers crossed,” Finch said. Theydid the music for the pilot, pro-duced by the same people whodid the Click and Clack series.
The band isn’t sitting aroundwaiting for news. Their sum-mer tour schedule is daunting, with 20 performances sched-uled for June alone, in loca-tions from New York toHouston.
Finch claims the band’sstrategy is “to wait around forfamous people to discover us.And it’s worked. Record com-panies come to us … DrewCarey invited us to do shows atthe MGM Las Vegas.” Hemakes it sound as if all thatsuccess was a happy accident.“Bob Dylan covered one of oursongs on his Christmas album. We didn’t know that was goingto happen.”
Formed more than 30 years
ago, Brave Combo has main-tained its base in Denton, despite its worldwide audienceand performances. Band mem-bers include Finch, guitar, key-board, accordion and vocals;Jeffrey Barnes, woodwinds, saxophone and vocals; DannyO’Brien, trumpet and vocals;Little Jack Melody, bass guitar;and Alan Emert, drums.
Known first as the band thatmade polka cool, BraveCombo’s repertoire includes anunbelievable variety of styles:Rock, blues, classical, salsa, meringue, cumbia, conjunto, polka, zydeco, cha cha andmore.
You’ll hear it all at the clos-ing of the Denton Arts & JazzFestival. Courtesy photo

Festival offers fun for the youngstersBy Kit KingFor the Denton Record-Chronicle
The Denton Arts and JazzFestival offers kids a chance toromp around the park, playgames, listen to music and cre-ate art.
It’s a full weekend of fun forthe youngsters.
The Denton FestivalFoundation members workhard to keep the festival anevent designed for the wholefamily. Each year new enter-tainments attract the youngerfestival goers, while youngperformers take the stage toshow off their accomplish-ments.
The Children’s Art Tentgives the kids a chance toexplore their creativity, withprojects that range from work-ing with clay to turning wood. This year, student members ofthe National Art EducationAssociation from theUniversity of North Texas, willoversee the tent and lead thechildren in their projects.
“We’re going to do somerecycled projects,” saidCatherine Hamrick, who isheading up the activities.“They’ll be making bottlebeings, figures made fromplastic water bottles.” In addi-tion, the kids will work withclay, print making, stampingand collage projects. “Theywill all make something theycan take with them.”
Hamrick is expectingaround 5,000 children in thetent over Saturday andSunday, and she will have 12students each day to help and
guide the little budding artists.Again this year, members of
the Golden TriangleWoodturners will be in the tentto help aspiring carpenters cre-ate bird houses and otherwooden creations.
Two long-time festivalfavorites will be entertainingthe children as they createtheir art. Magician Al Curlettwill be fascinating the kidswith his tricks and balloonsculptures, and Joel Reese, thesinging cowboy, has a bag fullof songs to perform.
A jazz educator and per-former, Steve Gryb will onceagain bring his percussion pet-ting zoo to the festival. Thishands-on exhibit of percussioninstruments gives the kids achance to try out instruments, both traditional and mostunusual.
In addition to the familiardrums and xylophones, Gryb’scollection of more that 2,000

pieces includes some unusualinstruments.
The Wrenchophone is a vari-ation of the xylophone withtuned wrenches, and theGlockenfish is a fish-shapedxylophone. The Clatterpillar isa set of dominos made to create
rippling sounds, while theSpring Drum creates the soundof thunder.
Youngsters will show offtheir musical talents, as well as.On the Target Center Stageinside the Denton SeniorCenter, and the Wells Fargo
Celebration Stage in front ofCity Hall, student bands, choirsand ensembles will perform, while dance and performancegroups from area schools canbe seen on the Denton Record-Chronicle Festival Stage, justoutside the Senior Center.
Creating cards and pictures with stamps gives kids a chance to express their creativity.

Larger crowdsinspire changeBy Kit KingFor the Denton Record-Chronicle
Veteran festival goers willsee a big change at the 2012Denton Arts & Jazz Festival.Stages are moving from oneend of the park to the other, allin the name of safety and com-fort for the audiences. Filledwith music, art, food, fun andgames, the festival brings morethan 200,000 to Quakertownpark on the last weekend inApril.
“We’re making these logisti-cal changes because ourcrowds just keep getting largerand larger,” explained CarolShort, executive director of theDenton Festival Foundation, which sponsors the event.“This new arrangement willmake more room for audi-ences, as well as make the parksafer for all.”
The Wells Fargo/BudweiserJazz Stage will move to thenorth side of the park, whilethe south area outside theCivic Center will hold theBudweiser Courtyard Stage, where professional rock andblues musicians perform. TheWells Fargo Celebration Stage, home to community, schooland university bands will standon the lawn in front of DentonCity Hall.
The other four stages willremain in their usual posi-tions. The KNTU-FM RadioRoving River Stage with itsethnically diverse and acousticmusic sets up behind theEmily Fowler Library. TheDenton Record ChronicleFestival Stage will be next tothe Denton Senior Center, andthe Target Center Stage will beinside the Senior Center. Boththese stages feature communi-ty and school groups. TheUniversity of North TexasShowcase Stage, where UNT
School of Music performancegroups appear will be locatednext to the Civic Center Pool.
The Denton PoliceDepartment will be working toensure the safety of audiences. As many as 30 officers will bepatrolling the park in a 24hour period, according toDenton Police Chief LeeHowell.
“The festivals have histori-cally been very safe, fun eventswith very little problems. Ithink we may have to makeonly two or three arrests a yearat most,” he said.
This year, the police will beenforcing city ordinancesstrictly: No glass containers inthe park. No exotic animalssuch as boa constrictors, igua-nas and monitor lizards (all ofwhich have been seen in pastyears). “These animals are pro-hibited from being kept in thecity limits under our prohibit-ed animal ordinance,” Howellnoted.
More conventional pets arediscouraged by festival offi-cials, in fact, they have con-templated requesting a ban ondogs at the event. The hugecrowds and noise can causestress for the most gentle ofpets.
“There have been a fewminor incidents regardingunsocial animals in recentyears,” Howell said, addingthat leash laws would be strict-ly enforced. “It gets so crowdedat times … that people arestepping over or around bothpeople and dogs, and this issometimes hard to manage.People may be asked to removetheir pets or leave the park ifthey do not keep (the animals)restrained.”

Los Lonely Boys to play Festival on SaturdayBy Kit KingFor the Denton Record-Chronicle
Nine years ago, Los LonelyBoys literally burst onto themusic scene, selling millionswith their first album and win-ning a Grammy.
Saturday at 9 pm, they willburst onto the Jazz Stage at theDenton Arts & Jazz Festival tobring their signature Texicanrock ‘n’ roll sound to the audi-ence.
While 2003 was the begin-ning of a career that keeps get-ting better and better, thethree brothers were nostrangers to the stage. Henry,Jojo and Ringo Garza grew upplaying behind their father incantinas and clubs aroundTexas.
In their teens, the brothersmoved to from San Angelo toNashville to take a shot atrecording. They returned to
Texas and worked the clubscene before they releasedtheir first album in 2003.
In 2008, PBS aired a docu-mentary on the band titledCottonfields and Crossroads, described as a “movingaccount that brings to life LosLonely Boys’ incredible per-sonal musical journey. Thefilm merges live performancevideo with intimate conversa-tions to tell the story.
The boys took a look back in2009 with 1969, a record thatbrings to life their roots insongs by The Beatles, TheDoors and Buddy Holly.
This year, they have releasedRockpango, their first self-pro-duced album. It combines fan-dango, huapango and Tex-Mex American rock to pro-duce a rollicking party sound. It is a demonstration of theirmaturing musical talents. Courtesy photo

Featured festival artist has original, colorful style
By Kit KingFor the Denton Record-Chronicle
Andy Quaglino, a self-taught painter from Lubbockwas chosen as the featuredartist for the 2012 DentonArts & Jazz Festival. His vividmontage of musical instru-ments will be seen aon all theprinted materials for the festi-val, as well as the front of the2012 festival T-shirts.
Quaglino was particularlypleased to be selected becausehe said the arts & jazz festivalwas, “one of the ones we enjoythe most. The whole feel of theshow was that it’s a communi-ty event. And, we loved listen-ing to the music.”
Quaglino had been paintingwhile holding down a full-time job, but he and his wifeDebie had discussed buying
an RV and traveling the USdoing shows. After Debie hada successful battle with breastcancer in 2005, they decided itwas time to follow up on theirdream.
In January of 2006 theyacquired an RV and beganthree months of travel acrossthe Southwest. In 2008, theysold their home in Austin andbegan a nomadic life.
Travelling from show to showacross the country, the wentfrom New York to Key West, from Minnesota to Arizona, doing about 30 shos each year.
Early this year, the couplebought a house in Colorado, but they haven’t given up theirRV or their traveling.
Quaglino says his favoriteartists are Picasso, Calder,Warhol, Matisse, LeRoyNeiman and Peter Max, andpeople often say they see theseinfluences in his work. It is notintentional, he said, but isprobably inevitable.
He set out to develop anoriginal, colorful style. “Theprimary subject in a piece isoverlaid by a set of carefullydesigned straight and/orcurved lines.

“Because we’ve extended thehours to 11 pm on Fridaynight, we’ve added anothershift,” said Carrell AnnSimmons, who is in charge ofvolunteers for the festival.“That means we have 687 slotsto fill.”
A daunting task, but onethat is essential to the produc-tion of the event.
“Without the Top Hands, the festival couldn’t be free. There is no way we couldafford to pay all those work-ers,” she said.
In addition, the dues fromTop Hand members raise sig-nificant funds, amounting toabout a $6,000 contributionto the Arts & Jazz Festival
treasury.With membership, Top
Hands have reserved parking, coupons for food and drink, a$1 discount on festival T-shirts, and access to theWomen’s Club Building.
“One of the problems we’vehad in the past was a lack ofparking,” Simmons noted. This year, festival officials havearranged for reserved parkingabout a block from the festivalgrounds, almost doubling thespaces for festival volunteers.
If you would like to join thisenthusiastic group of workers, you can sign up on the festivalwebsite at www.dentonjaz-zfest.com, or call Simmons at940-367-8311.
