WHAT | Research and explore America’s relationship with clothing and its assumed disposability. Design a product that will alter the way we use clothing.

WHO | Jackie is a marketing specialist living in NYC. She likes to keep up with trends and express herself through her clothing.

It’s cheaper to get a new favorite t-shirt, anyway.

Higher population density means more concentrated potential!

CURRENT OPTIONS | Alternatives to clothing disposal includeclothing donation and repair. Though underutilized, they should still be considered.

PATCHING

MENDING BY SEWING REPURPOSING

MENDING BY HAND

Why patch when new clothes are so cheap?

Requires initial time and money investment.

Requires skill and time.

Does not appeal to everybody...

9

Damaged clothing cannot be donated, so it is thrown away.

A survey by Goodwill Industries, one of the largest textile collectors, found that half of

the people making donations prefer door-to-door pickup. More than half would not go more than 10 minutes out of their way to make a drop off.

Highest hygiene and safety standards

“Thinking of you” is the core message of Electrolux marketing communication. It lifts the strong consumer focus of Electrolux into prominence.

Attention to detail when developing new products

Electrolux is founded on the principles ethics, integrity, respect, diversity, safety and sustainability.

13

DIRECTIONTEXTILE RECYCLING | After exploring possible opportunities to encourage textile repair and recycling, I determined that a more effective approach might be to develop a convenient way to demonstrate textile recycling right in front of consumers with the result of an incentive. This decision was based on feedback from potential users and ID faculty.

REFINEMENTFORM DEVELOPMENT | The goal of this phase was to develop a form that fit the footprint of existing Electrolux professional series machines. The design also needed to strongly reflect the Electrolux’s brand language, but imply a radically new function- recycling textiles by felting.

15

16

REFINEMENTUSER INTERACTION | Users include customers who operate, owners who provide, or individuals that service the machines.
