DAY 2

Developing affordable solutions for emerging markets has become an important skill for professionals in any disciplines. Engineers, entrepreneurs, scientists, and policy-makers alike

face a changing global landscape in which the gross domestic product (GDP) of the developing world has surpassed that of the developed world. . “Innovation is the change that unlocks new values”, was rightly said by Jamie Notter. We must realise that the future is here and the future is now and the onus is on us that how geared up we are for the challenging, unpredictable and

often cut-throat competition in emerging markets. We cannot wait for things to happen. It is incumbent upon us to make things happen. We shall achieve this by broadening our limits and thinking out of the box. Or so to say, as this year's theme suggests, “Innovative Solutions for Emerging Markets”, it is all about innovation even if it means “Coming up with a product that the customer didn't even know they needed.” Through this year's convention, we hope to apprise all about developing affordable and innovative solutions that are needed and are very important for expanding into emerging markets. We are witnessing an emergence of newer more dynamic economic systems and along with it come the challenge of providing greater availability of affordable solutions. The world cannot subsist by resorting to makeshift solutions.

At 09:00 am, the inauguration ceremony by lighting the lamp. The lamp lighting ceremony included Chief Guest, Mr. K. T. S. Tulsi; Guest of Honor, Mr. A. Glimpses of 6th Annual International Commerce Conference

In her welcome address Prof. Kavita Sharma, Head, Department of Commerce, Delhi School of Economics, and Dean, Faculty of Commerce and Business expressed how the theme of digital marketing very well resonates with the way our life is getting impacted, right from governance to household management. She emphasized that there are learnings which one needs to utilize in digital space to the best of own advantage given the convenience of expression, transparency, openness to ideas, ease and speed. As a message to young audience she stated that though digitalization provides manifold opportunities to explore in every domain of life but one needs to understand that 10 digital mobile number, display pictures, hash-tags do not define the person as the way they are. Acknowledging Ministry of Information Technology, she highlighted that it has scaled new heights and one is witnessing digital transformation within the country. Inclusive growth is a way to ensure sustainability and digital inclusion a means to that. Mentioning about University of Delhi, she talked about adaptation of digital transformation by the University at various platforms including admissions and other processes like e-procurement and e-tendering that are fully transparent now and bringing in new level of ease and transparency in the system. She also described how Department of Commerce has exuberantly and perpetually benefitted by switching to digital mode at various avenues including academics, administrative operations and holding of this conference which has been handled entirely online using various e-platforms.

Prof Pami Dua, Chairperson, Research Council and Director, Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi welcomed the guests and reiterated the message of Swami Vivekananda who believed in integrated development of mankind. Recognizing that one needs to remain grounded in this dynamic digital world, she said the conference theme stood appropriate in today's age of digital innovation and technology which has lead to creation of knowledge driven innovation economy. Considering the conference as forum for healthy and productive exchange of ideas, she looked forward as to how the conference would further strengthen the research expertise of University of Delhi which is nationally recognized.

“Digital is already here and future of marketing practices we really don't know”, quoted Ms. Vinita Bali, Former CMD, Britannia Industries Ltd. Elaborating upon the theme, she stated that speed of digitalization, flexibility, adaptability, embracing new technologies is going to be of essence for marketers. She said that real advantage of digitalization, access to technology and affordability of technology is happening at an

individual level. Explaining real life cases through short stories, she stressed upon understanding innovativeness of individuals behind digitalization. Realizing that 80% of the Indian population is self-employed in some way or other, she gave examples on how such people have taken to technology, have not made just their lives but also life of consumers very happy and simple. Power of technology is such that it actually creates opportunities to supplement family income, to create new businesses etc. For organized marketers, she stated that they don't know where their competitors will come from. In this era of digitalization, they need to identify the enhanced advantage they can create for their customers in terms of products and services. With increased opportunities comes increased responsibility. Having access to data does not mean having access to information, knowledge or wisdom. More significant than having access to big data or artificial intelligence is to know how intelligence is worked upon the created data. She emphasized that technology cannot be escaped but its impact depends upon how one can access, use and embrace technology. Role of marketing is not going to change, what is going to change is how those benefits, products and services are delivered to customers in the digitalized era, she stated.

Prof. Yogesh K. Tyagi, Hon'ble Vice Chancellor, University of Delhi put his views across the transition of India from an insignificant place to a significant global player and the role of digital technology in this regard. He pointed that though India did not witness Industrial Revolution, Digital Revolution has brought greatest powers on earth as Information Technology Power and that should not be escaped. He proudly articulated how the University of Delhi is increasingly adopting digital ways of work ranging from admission process to fee payment. Mentioning that legal revolution is taking place, he said that we are in process of empowerment in most democratic manner. He congratulated Prof. Kavita Sharma, Head, Department of Commerce, Delhi School of Economics, and Dean, Faculty of Commerce and Business for organizing this conference.

Prof. Jagdish Sheth, Emory University Atlanta, USA and Founder-Chairman, Academy of Indian Marketing stated that digital technology is revolutionizing branded consumption. Each individual has the opportunity and is able to create its own brand. He further claimed that India is the major market for technology, not the advanced nations because technology needs masses and masses need technology. Advent of more and more nuclear families in this country is representative of first time buyers of everything and this suggests huge consumption spending and this is the market to be explored.

Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad, Hon'ble Minister of Electronics & Information Technology and Minister of Law & Justice, recognized that for a market to happen, one needs suppliers and consumers along with a platform which is accessible, has application and which can be adopted. He addressed how digital technology is creating markets, accessible platforms and unimaginable potential for IT India. He spoke about Digital India programme is creating opportunities and how is it transforming India in a realm beyond imagination. IT (Information Technology) + IT (India's Talent) = IT (India Tomorrow), he noted. He emphasized that India should not miss the Digital Revolution but should become a leader in that, especially because it had missed the Industrial Revolution followed by Entrepreneurial Revolution which happened during 70's, 80's and 90's. He stated that India's digital system is very powerful and India is going to become powerful centre of low cost cyber security products. Digital India is more for poor, underprivileged and designed to empower ordinary Indians. Today's consumer is all set to become creator of his own content and all traditional forms of marketing would go for a bust. What model will come, no one knows. It is a virtual world wherein pressure for marketers is enormous. He further added that Digital India must aim at Digital Inclusion which is supported by a technology that is affordable, inclusive and developmental. He brought forward three stages of digital evolution commencing from Indian IT Industry going abroad and scaling tricolor across countries by showing extraordinary entrepreneurship to world visiting India for business and finally India becoming the third biggest start-up movement in the world. While digital footprint is rising enormously, he said that Indian Government is seeking that digital economy (through IT, ITES, E-commerce, cyber security digital governance, digital payment mechanisms) becomes one trillion dollar economy in coming five years. Digital India is ideology neutral; Digital India is political neutral; Digital India is India Positive; he said.

Prof. Madan Lal concluded the inaugural session by delivering vote of thanks.

The conference observed Plenary Sessions under three heads:

Understanding Digital Consumer & Marketing Practices

Social Media for Social Causes

Analytics: Present and Future

This conference intended to explore digital outreach by understanding digital consumer in varied perspectives. Endeavors were directed at developing a deeper insight into changing perspective of consumer's decision making process in online environment, appreciate decision simplification heuristics and processing patterns of the consumer, given this overwhelming enormity of information and stimuli in online environment , get an outlook on how different media like mobiles are playing a noteworthy role in redesigning the overall purchase pattern in the digital space, highlight the opportunities for business entities to infuse their products or services into the consumer decision making process at the right time in the right context so as to create a desirable influence on online environment and discuss and address the key challenges and concerns faced by a business entity in managing online consumer experiences.

Digital penetration at a faster but steady pace is an indicator of increased and active usage of social media. The most popular social media network, Facebook, is estimated to have 1.5 billion monthly users across nations. On an average, people around the world spend more than one third of their day on digital media. Surprised with such an amplified digital consumption, media conglomerates are tapping the trend and utilizing the potential of the new age media space to design their marketing moves in reaching out to and targeting at unexpectedly huge potential of consumers. Considering the fact that the digital media will continue unabatedly to penetrate society deeper, it is believed this trend will never fade.

The Digital India vision provides the intensified impetus for further momentum and progress for e-Governance and would promote inclusive growth that covers electronic services, products, devices, manufacturing and job opportunities. Digital infrastructure will focus on providing high speed secure Internet. Governance and services on demand will stress on integrating services across departments and jurisdictions and making services available in real time for both online and mobile platform. This Conference provided some valuable suggestions on the approaches, strategies, prospects, and challenges to the Digital India vision envisaged by the present Government of India.

With old methods turning redundant and traditional indicators declining in their effectiveness, marketing practices are viewed with a new perspective wherein business entities need to understand the required integration between big data analysis and managerial decision making. The conference attempted to develop an in-depth understanding of statistical techniques of digging into consumer psychology such as emoji analytics, web analytics, social media analytics, consumer journey mapping and analytics and so on.

With this trend surging ahead, new techniques such as search engine optimization, search engine marketing, content marketing, data driven marketing, email marketing and social media marketing are occupying the marketing space in a very large manner. Major social media platforms having built-in data

analytics are taking advantage by assisting companies in tracking the progress, success and engagement of ad campaigns. Ever growing presence of stronger digital and social media is nowadays quintessential in obtaining data insights and helping people know about the marketing activities as a whole.
