Less energy consumption
Department of Energy - 2020 Requirements
Why is this Changing? • The United States Government is pursuing
0.27 quadrillion BTUs of energy saving over a 30-year period − The most costly expense of a pump over time is
the energy costs− This new standard will reduce energy
consumption, saving your customers money!

Department of Energy - 2020 Requirements
• A new performance metric has been created− Pump Energy Index (PEI)
• PEI will have two classifications− Constant Load (PEICL)
− Variable Load (PEIVL)
Both classifications will be listed on the nameplate Both classifications will be listed on performance curve & literature
How will the New Requirement be Measured?
Pump energy index

PEI Definitions & Calculations• PEICL
− Pumps rated as bare pumps or pumps sold with motors
• PEIVL
− Pumps sold with motors and continuous or non-continuous controls rated

Great, but what is PER?
Department of Energy - 2020 Calculations
PEICL PERSTD
PERCL
PEIVL PERSTD
PERVL
18
Department of Energy - 2020 Calculations
• PERcl = the equally-weighted average electric input power to the pump measured (or calculated at the driver input over a specified load profile− Tested in accordance with DOE test procedure− Only applies to pumps in fixed speed equipment class − For bare pumps, default motor loss values for driver input calculations are specified in DOE
test procedure
• PERVL = the PER rating of a minimally compliant pump− Described as the allowable weighted average electric input power to the specfic pump − Metric applies to all equipment classes
• PERSTD = the equally-weighted average electric input power to the pump measured or calculated at the controller input over a specified load− Tested in accordance with the DOE test procedure − Metric only applies to pumps in a variable speed equipment class

19
Understanding PERSTD
• A recent article by Pumps & Systems Magazine best describes how to find PER− Finding PER is needed to calculate PEI
• To establish baseline pump efficiency requirements:− 20 manufacturers submitted data on the five
pump types for over 3,000 unique pumps.– Flow
– Head
– Power
– Efficiency − DOE determined the baseline standards and life
cycle cost (LCC) analysis...– Resulted in what is called C-values

20
Understanding PERSTD
• The baseline levels were taken at the 25th percentile (column EL 2) − All pumps below the 25th percentile will not be
in compliance with the standard
• When calculating both PEICL and PEIVL, those values shown in column EL 2 are to be used for PERSTD (Robinson, 2019)

21
Department of Energy - 2020 Calculations
• ωi− 0.3333
• Piin,m
− Calculated driver power input to the motor at load point i for the minimally compliant pump (hp)
• i− The load point corresponding to 75, 100, or
110 percent of the BEP flow rate
Calculating PERSTD
Now we solve for PEI

22
Department of Energy - 2020 Calculations
• A value of PEI greater than 1.00 indicates: − Pump consumes more energy than allowed by DOE's energy conservation standard
− Pump does not comply
• A value less than 1.00 indicates:− Pump consumes less energy than the level required by the standard
− Pump does comply!

Department of Energy - 2020 Notes
• Is it possible to sell a pump to an end-user that has a pump label with a PEICL rating, but comes with a VFD?
− YES!
− If a motor and control are added to a PEICL rated pump, the PEICL can remain on the nameplate and no additional reporting to DOE is required
Frequently Asked Questions
PELCL can remain on nameplate when system changes occur

24
Department of Energy - 2020 Notes
• How will the DOE enforce these requirements? Are there inspectors required at every installation? What local jurisdiction will be handling compliance of the DOE regulation?
− DOE enforces the standards
− DOE’s assessment and enforcement process is documented in 10 CFR 429 – subpart C
− Additional Information: http://energy.gov/gc/conservation-standards-enforcement-useful-links
Frequently Asked Questions
US DOE will enforce the standards

25
Department of Energy - 2020 Notes
• Is the PEI rating only conducted on full diameter impellers, or can a pump be rated with a trimmed impeller?
− PEI is determined based on the full impeller diameter of the rated basic model.
Subsequent trimmed impellers can be distributed in commerce under the same rated basic model number
The manufacturer has the option to trim the impeller and re-designate the trimmed impeller as the full diameter as a new basic model
Frequently Asked Questions
Trimmed impellers are covered by full impeller model numbers

Pump Selections
• Manufacturers can only sell regulated pumps that are in compliance with DOE for the pump types and applications discussed
− Pump selection post regulation will be very similar to making a pump selection today
− Burden is on the manufacturer to provide DOE-compliant pumps
− Selection software programs and efficiency curves are best pump selection tools

Pump Selections
• Pentair Aurora* End Suction 3800 Series Pump − Use the curve to ensure you have the lowest motor HP
Rated power is when the HP is acceptable at the duty condition, but will not support the pump as you get closer to runout
Max power is when the motor HP can meet conditions at runout In this example, you would not need to increase the motor HP to meet runout conditions.
This will save money, and energy costs
