FACULTY JAMES C. (Jim) ANTHONY, MSc, PhD / Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Winner of multiple awards for mentoring of new and early stage investigators, Jim also is recognized for high impact work in neuropsychiatry and the behavioral & social sciences at their intersections with epidemiology. His work yields increasingly definitive evidence on suspected hazards attributed to tobacco, alcohol, and internationally regulated drugs such as cannabis, cocaine, and the opioids, and their prevention. His work on Alzheimer's type and other dementias also is highly cited.

DAVID A. BARONDESS, PhD / Assistant Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Dr. Barondess’ research is centered on the intersection of drug dependence epidemiology and skeletal health and disease. A main interest is exploring ethnic disparities, gene-environment interactions, ageing, and socioeconomic factors vis-à-vis patterns of drug/polydrug use, including tobacco-alcohol exposures. This drug-drug combination focus underpins a longer-term research interest in the epidemiology of, and the variability in, patterns of adolescent growth and development.

NAOMI BRESLAU, PhD / Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Dr. Breslau is a highly cited psychiatric epidemiologist and Ph.D.-trained sociologist who makes major contributions and scientific advances in the epidemiological study of numerous psychiatric conditions and behavioral disturbances, most prominently post-traumatic stress disorder and tobacco dependence. She also has been an important contributor of epidemiological evidence on long-term effects of low birth weight, with respect to problem-solving capacities as disclosed by intelligence and other cognitive testing.

WENJIANG FU, PhD / Associate Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Dr. Fu is a biostatistician with expertise in a wide range of statisitcal modeling and applications to biomedical research, computational and social sciences. He has been leading research to solve a long term unsetted age-period-cohort analysis of incidence and mortality rates of chronic diseases. His work in variable selection via the LASSO has been well recognized. He has developed numerous methods in genome research and has been granted a US patent in microarray technology.

JOSEPH C GARDINER, PhD / Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Dr. Gardiner has been a faculty member at MSU since 1978 where his primary research interests are in outcomes research, survival analysis and cost-effectiveness analysis. He has published widely on methodological aspects of statistics as well as in many applied areas. Dr. Gardiner is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association, an Elected Member of the International Statistical Institute and recipient of the Distinguished Faculty Award from MSU in 2002.

HECTOR GONZÁLEZ, PhD / Associate Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Dr. González is a licensed clinical psychologist and neuropsychologist, and his scholarly works are informed by his clinical experiences and life as an ethnic minority in the United States. As such, his clinical research emphases are on neuropsychiatric disorders. His work has focused on Major Depressive Disorders and Neurocognitive Disorders (Alzheimer’s disease and dementias). He has also defined and extensively examined depression and cancer healthcare inequalities among African Americans, Latinos, and American Indians.

CLAUDIA HOLZMAN, DVM, MPH, PhD / Dept. Chair, Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Dr. Holzman’s research focuses on pregnancy outcomes, women’s health, and health disparities. She is Principal Investigator (PI) of an NIH-funded, longitudinal study, the Pregnancy Outcomes and Community Health (POUCH) Study, which began by enrolling 3,019 women at mid-pregnancy from 52 clinics in 5 Michigan communities. Dr. Holzman is also PI for a K-12 award, Building Interdisciplinary Careers in Women's Health (BIRCWH), and co-investigator for a T-32 Perinatal Epidemiology training grant.

JEAN KERVER, PhD, MSc, RD / Assistant Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Dr. Kerver's primary research goals are to 1) understand the nutritional determinants of health using nutritional and epidemiologic methods and 2) find ways to translate that understanding into public health programming—with a special focus on maternal and child health. Dr. Kerver serves as the Lead Nutrition Scholar for MSU Extension where she provides epidemiologic expertise for statewide nutrition programming.

CHENXI LI, PhD / Assistant Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Dr Li's primary research works focus on statistical analysis of interval-censored failure time data and multivariate survival analysis including competing risks analysis, frailty models and multi-state models. His research interests also include quantile regression, longitudinal data analysis and statistical genetics. Beside methodological research in biostatistics, Dr Li has been collaborating with medical researchers at MSU in grant applications, data analyses and manuscript writing.

QING LU, PhD / Assistant Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Dr. Lu has been actively involved in statistical genetics research and training, and has two NIH-funded lines of research. One area of research is the development and application of new statistical methods for genetic association analysis (e.g., gene-gene interaction analysis). In parallel with this line of research, Dr. Lu has also developed statistical methods for designing and evaluating risk prediction models. In addition to his research, he is also involved in three NIH T32 programs as training faculty.

ZHEHUI LUO, MS, PhD / Assistant Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Dr. Luo joined the Department as a tenure-track assistant professor in 2009. With a Ph.D. in economics and an M.S. in statistics, Dr. Luo has extensive experience in epidemiological studies and health services research, collaborating with a broad range of investigators in a multidisciplinary environment. Her primary research interest is to develop new econometric and statistical methodologies for heterogeneous treatment effects in comparative effectiveness research with observational data.

CLAIRE MARGERISON-ZILKO, PhD / Assistant Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Claire Margerison-Zilko is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Dr. Margerison-Zilko’s research examines the relationships between macro- and individual-level social and economic factors and maternal, infant, and child health. Her work focuses on understanding the determinants of racial/ethnic and socioeconomic disparities in perinatal and early life health, drawing on theory and methods from across disciplines.

JANET OSUCH, MD / Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Janet Rose Osuch (M.D., 1979, Michigan State University (MSU); M.S. 2000, MSU) is Professor of Surgery and Epidemiology at MSU and has served as Assistant Dean of Preclinical Curriculum in the College of Human Medicine since 2006. She currently practices breast cancer risk counseling and conducts research in environmental epidemiology. She is the author of several journal articles on breast cancer, topics in medical education, and the health effects of in utero DDE and PCB exposure.

DOROTHY PATHAK, PhD, MS / Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Dr. Pathak has been involved in epidemiologic and biostatistical research for the past 35 years. The principal focus of her research is breast cancer etiology and prevention. She is the PI of an NCI-funded international study of breast cancer in women of Polish ancestry evaluating contributions of nutritional exposures to breast cancer risk. She has published about the dual effect of pregnancy on breast cancer risk, the cross-over in breast cancer incidence for young Black and White women, as well as on the serotonergic mediation of estrogen-related physiology and pathology.

NIGEL PANETH, MD, MPH / Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Dr. Paneth studies childhood neurodevelopmental handicap in relation to exposures in pregnancy and the perinatal period. He leads a case-control study of cerebral palsy examining gene expression in archived newborn blood spots. He has assembled pregnancy cohorts in Michigan and Jamaica with archived biological material to examine early influences on disease or development. He teaches 3 courses – Introductory Epidemiology, Perinatal Epidemiology, and Research Proposal Development (EPI 935).

JAMES M. PIVARNIK, PhD / Professor of Kinesiology and Epidemiology and Biostatistics

James Pivarnik is a professor of Kinesiology and Epidemiology & Biostatistics and Director of the Center for Physical Activity and Health. As an exercise physiologist and epidemiologist, he studies the exercise responses of females, particularly during pregnancy, and children, both healthy and those with chronic diseases. His focus is on the role of physical activity in reducing the risk factors for chronic disease development (e.g., cardiovascular disease) and morbidity and mortality

MAT REEVES, BVSc, PhD / Associate Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Mathew Reeves academic interest in chronic disease epidemiology stems from a desire to blend the quantitative aspects of epidemiology and biostatistics with practical aspects of disease prevention and public health. He has a broad range of research interests but his primary focus is on health services research in the area of hospital based acute stroke care. He teaches cardiovascular disease epidemiology to graduate students and Evidence-Based Medicine to first and second year medical students.

MAHDI SAEED, DVM, MPH, PhD / Prof Large Animal Sciences, Epidemiology & Biostatistics

Mahdi Saeed is a professor of Epidemiology and Infectious Diseases with a joint appointment in large-animal clinical sciences in the College of Veterinary Medicine and Epidemiology in the College of Human Medicine and the National Food Safety Center at Michigan State University. His main areas of research are the causes and prevention of food borne illnesses. Dr. Saeed designed and has been teaching LCS 830 (Public Health Impact of Foodborne Diseases), and EPI 813 (Outbreak Investigation) .

NICOLE TALGE, PhD / Assistant Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Nicole Talge is a developmental psychologist investigating links between pregnancy health and the development of childhood cognitive and socio-emotional problems. Her most recent efforts investigate the antecedents and consequences associated with global markers of gestational health (e.g., birth weight for gestational age; preterm birth). A major area of interest involves understanding the source(s) of variability in childhood behavioral outcomes following exposure to perinatal health risks.

DAVID TODEM, MSPH, PhD / Associate Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Dr Todem’s current line of research in methods evolve around the following topics: 1) Models for longitudinal, clustered and functional data; 2) Inferential techniques for non-identifiable models in the context of non-random missing data paradigm; and 3)Testing procedures for evaluating mixture models. Primary applications are in the area of Alzheimer’s disease, Cancer, and Dental Caries research.

ELLEN VELIE, PhD, MPH / Associate Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Dr. Velie obtained her BA from Harvard and Ph.D in Epidemiology from the University of California Berkeley. She was a Cancer Prevention Fellow at the National Cancer Institute before joining the faculty at MSU in 2000. Dr. Velie's research focuses on life course sociocultural and early life nutritional risk factors for obesity and breast cancer. She is the PI for a large $14 million NIH study entitled, ‘Life course course energy balance and breast cancer risk in young Black/White women' (YWHHS).

ELIZABETH (Betsy) WASILEVICH, PhD, MPH / Asst Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Dr. Wasilevich’s research examines health services for the diagnosis and management of chronic disease. Her work focuses on understanding the determinants of high quality and efficient health care during treatment, survivorship, and end of life periods for persons with cancer. She also leads studies to identify opportunities to improve clinical asthma management and emergency department care.

JULIE WIRTH, PhD / Assistant Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Dr. Wirth’s research has focused on the effects of exposure to environmental contaminants on male infertility and the modification of this relationship by common genetic variants. I’m also interested in the effects of these chemicals on neurodevelopmental problems such as autism. Another interest is how these chemicals affect development of the infant gut microbiome and early life development of allergies.

SPECIALISTS MADELEINE LENSKI, MS / Research

Madeleine Lenski has been a Research Specialist at MSU for over 15 years, as both study manager and PI for perinatal and cerebral palsy research studies, both international and domestic. These projects have largely focused on etiology and outcomes of very premature births and of cerebral palsy, including follow-up at preschool and school age.

JAMIL B. SCOTT, PhD, MPH / Research

Dr. Scott joined the faculty in 2013. Her primary research interests have centered on the potential diseases related to vitamin D deficiency, such as colorectal cancer, hypertension and adverse birth outcomes, especially among African-Americans. Completing her graduate work in cell and developmental biology, Dr. Scott takes a special interest in understanding the underlying molecular mechanisms of disease and how they can be used to inform disease outcomes on the population level.
