Our Summer Camp Bus Transportation is Convenient While Helping the Environment

Did you know most camps offer easy, convenient bus transportation from many of Rockville’s neighborhoods? Make your life easier by signing up to use the buses. You’ll also help improve your environment by reducing emissions and the number of cars on the road! Look for this symbol by the camps that include bus transportation. NOTE: For planning purposes, register for transportation only if planning on using the service.

Here’s how it works: Transportation is provided by MCPS buses. Buses pick up campers at designated City sites (see list) between 8:10-8:45 a.m., returning between 3:20-3:50 p.m. An exact time at each bus stop can not be specified due to traffic, road construction, etc. Bus pick-up/drop-off stops are not staffed.• Campers should arrive at their bus stop by 8:10

a.m., particularly on the first two days of each camp session. By the third day of a session, a more accurate time schedule will have been established for each bus stop.

• Campers are picked up at the designated bus stops in the morning and bused to Welsh Park. Campers are then reassigned, with the assistance of camp staff, to their specific camp bus and transported or walked to camp. In the afternoon, this procedure is followed in reverse. Every effort will be made to follow an established bus schedule; however, mechanical failures and traffic conditions may cause delays or detours.

• Parents/guardians must meet their child at the bus stop in the afternoon. If your child is permitted to walk home alone, a written note must be given to the bus driver to verify this. Also, it is important that parents communicate in writing with camp staff when their child’s transportation arrangements change.

• In order to reduce the amount of time campers are on the buses and to maximize efficiency of camp transportation, the City may eliminate bus stops where there are fewer than five campers registered. Notification will be made.

• Bus routes are subject to change at the start of each new camp session. This may change pick-up and drop off times.

About Welsh Park...Welsh Park serves as the hub of the bus transportation system. All buses leave from Welsh Park in the morning at approximately 8:55 a.m. and return in the afternoon at approximately 3:05 p.m. If you have children in several camps that include bus transportation, dropping at Welsh Park is a convenient option. Children should not be dropped off at Welsh Park until 8:50 a.m. and should be picked up no later than 3:10 p.m. If you must park to drop off or pick up, use the Swim Center parking lot.

General Information

§

Certification InformationThe City of Rockville Department of Recreation and Parks strives to maintain the highest quality programs and professional standards. In conjunction with this goal, the camp program is certified under the State Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and undergoes periodic inspections. As a result of this certification, there are specific policies, procedures and forms the City must follow to comply with regulations. All forms are available at www.rockvillemd.gov/recreation. Note: Forms are “fillable” and can be duplicated if your child is attending multiple camps.• Participant Medical Information Form

This form will be sent electronically along with other important information and forms prior to the start of each camp session. Be sure to complete and send with your child on the first day of camp. Form also includes dismissal information.

• Prescription/Non-prescription Medication If your child will be taking medication during camp time, specific medical forms must be completed prior to attending. The forms may either be down loaded at www.rockvillemd.gov/recreation or by calling 240-314-8620. Forms must be signed by your physician.

• Immunizations If your child is not currently attending a school in the state of Maryland, you must provide a copy of proper immunizations upon registration. Note: This will apply particularly to those entering Kindergarten.

Age RequirementParticipation in most programs is based on the child’s age as of Sept. 1, 2013 (per MCPS). Note: Some camps require that children be the appropriate age at the start of the camp. See specific camp descriptions for more details.

LocationsCamp locations may be changed due to facility availability and MCPS scheduling. Participants will be notified. Most indoor locations are air-conditioned, except MCPS gyms

HolidayCamp will not be held Thursday, July 4. All fees have been prorated.

Rain Days/Red Zone DaysAll camps are held rain, shine or red zone days. Outdoor camps may be moved indoors. On red zone days, outdoor programs provide low-key activities, water breaks and rest periods. Camp dismissal sites will remain as scheduled. Note: For updated recorded information, call 240-314-5023.

LunchCampers must bring a lunch, snack and a drink. Healthy choices and reusable containers

are encouraged. No glass containers. Campers are not permitted to purchase any food at the pool snack bar. Note: Refrigeration is not available at most sites.

SwimmingMost campers attending two-week camps have a recreational swim period at Rockville Swim and Fitness Center on designated days. Specific information will be included in the Camp Information Packet, which will be emailed approximately 10 days prior the start of camp. Swim lessons are included in the two-week sessions of Explorers and Let’s Move! Cost included in camp fee along with recreational swim and supervised play, Tuesday through Thursday.

Are You a Resident?City residents are those individuals residing within the City’s corporate tax limits. Verify your residency to avoid disappointment. Do

not assume that a Rockville mailing address is within the City’s corporate tax limits. Proof of residency may be requested, via driver’s license or water bill.

Camp ConfirmationNotification of camp status will be emailed within one week of registration for those registering via fax or mail.

>Camp ClosureCall 240-314-5023 for pre-recorded information to check the status of a camp in the event of weather or any other emergency. If camp has to be canceled due to weather-related circumstances or any other reason beyond our control, we will work to provide camp services at an alternate location. If that is not possible, camp will be canceled. Call the number for the most up-to-date information.

Access Camp Payment PlanFor your convenience, you may choose to pay in full at the time of registration or select the payment plan option. This payment plan option, which must be chosen at the time of registration, divides the total amount due into four equal payments: 25% of the total fees will be due at the time of registration, with the remaining payments due by April 1, May 1 and June 3. You must register early to take advantage of this opportunity as payment due dates will not be changed. For example, if you register for programs in April, 50% of the fees will be due, with the remaining installments due by May 1 and June 3. If you register for programs in May, 75% of the fees will be due, with the remaining installment due by June 3. To sign up for the payment plan option, you must check the payment plan box on the registration form or internet display screen. Payment plans will not be available after June 3. All payment plans will be assessed a 3% late fee if the payment is received more than five days after the due date. Outstanding balances as of June 4, 2013 could result in the child being withdrawn from the program.

Camp Information PacketSpecific camp details, a schedule of a typical camp day including swim days along with participant medical information forms will be emailed to each registrant approximately 10 days prior to the start of each camp session. Be sure your child brings the necessary forms with him/her on the first day of each session. If your child is attending multiple camps, you are encouraged to make copies. Forms may also be downloaded at www.rockvillemd.gov/recreation.

You may choose either a credit which will be placed on your recreation account or a refund. Note: Credit or refund requests are refunded, less the $25 non-refundable deposit per program. No refunds can be issued after the two-week deadline.

We will make every effort to accommodate those on the waiting list. When and if an opening becomes available, we will go to the waiting list to fill the camp.

Frequently Called Numbers

(Information/cancellation)

(Leagueplaycancellation)

(Rainsite/redzone/cancellation)

Frequently Asked QuestionsQ: My child will be the correct age for

camp by Sept. 1, 2013. May I register?A: Yes, for most camps, you may register your child

for the program as long as he/she is the correct age by Sept. 1, 2013, the age deadline set by MCPS. (See individual camp descriptions for details.)

Q: Can I enroll my child in the same camp all summer?A: Technically, yes. But please be aware that sessions

will be somewhat repetitive. Our experience has been that when a child is repeatedly enrolled in the same camp all summer, they can become bored. One suggestion might be to register for the same camp at the beginning and then later in the summer.

Q: Who are the camp staff who will be supervising my child?

A: Our camp staff is selected for their experience, enthusiasm, desire and ability to work well with children. Staff training includes safety procedures, program planning, skills development and techniques in working with children. Staff is certified in CPR and First Aid training. Reference and background checks, including fingerprinting, are also part of the hiring process.

Q: Will I receive any additional camp information after registering?

A: Yes. Registration confirmations will be emailed within one week of registering. Additional information, including the daily schedule with staff names, required forms and other information will be emailed to you approximately 10 days prior to the start of each session. The mandatory forms can be completed electronically and copied if your child is attending multiple camp sessions.
