Revision Worksheet - 3

Topic: L-1.1 Animal Skeletons

Grade 4 ...... Name:.............................................................. Date: ...../....../2018

Animals can be classified into two groups:

1- Invertebrates = animals without backbone. They usually have hard external skeleton to protect

their body and give it shape. Some invertebrates have no skeleton at all.

2- Vertebrates = animals with backbone. They usually have bony internal skeleton.

(No need to study the groups of invertebrates. This is only to enrich student’s knowledge.

Students must only learn about crustaceans, arachnids and insects.)

1- Invertebrates are animals without backbone. Here are some groups of invertebrates:

A- Cnidarians- jelly-like animals with tentacles and stinging cells. Identify these cnidarians.

Write: jellyfish – sea anemones – corals

_____________________ _______________________ _______________________

B- Annelids- body is divided into many segments (rings) joined together, called segmented worms,

and they have moist (wet) skin and no legs. Identify these annelids. Write: earthworm – leech

_________________________ _______________________

corals sea anemones jellyfish

leech earthworm

C- Arthropods- include crustaceans, arachnids, insects, etc.

*Crustaceans- have hard shell, gills, more than 8 jointed legs. Identify these crustaceans.

Write: crab – shrimp – lobster – woodlouse

________________ __________________ _________________ ___________________

*Arachnids- body is divided into 2 parts, and they have 8 legs. Identify these arachnids.

Write: ticks – scorpion – mites – spider

_______________ ____________________ _________________ _____________________

(Did you know that a spider is not an insect? ?? Count its legs!!! Does it have 6 or 8 legs???)

*Insects- body is divided into 3 parts, have 6 legs, and breathing tubes.

Identify these insects. Write: beetle – ladybug – bee – ant – butterfly – housefly

___________ ___________ _________ __________ ______________ _________________

D- Mollusks- have a soft body and use their muscular foot/feet to move. Identify these mollusks.

Write: octopus – snail – squid – slug – clam

woodlouse shrimp crab lobster

ticks mites spider lobster

ant housefly bee beetle ladybug butterfly

slug snail clam squid octopus

E- Echinoderms- Identify these echinoderms. Write: starfish – sea cucumber – brittle star – sea urchin

__________________ _______________________ ____________________ _________________

(Students must learn the groups of vertebrates. No need to learn spellings. Keywords will be given.)

2- Vertebrates are animals with backbone or bony internal skeleton. They can be grouped into the

following:

A- Fish – live in water, lay eggs, have gills for breathing and have fins to help them swim.

Identify these fish. Write pomfret, shark, goldfish, salmon

______________ _______________ _______________ ________________

B- Amphibians – live both on land and in water and lay eggs. They have moist (wet) skin. Toads

have bumpy skin as compared to frogs. Identify these amphibians. Write frog – salamanders - toad

__________________ _______________________ ________________

C- Reptiles- have dry skin which may be covered with scales, have lungs for breathing and lay eggs.

Identify these reptiles. Write: chameleon – lizard – snake – crocodile – turtle

________________ ______________ ____________ _____________ ______________

sea cucumber brittle star sea urchin starfish

goldfish pomfret salmon shark

toad salamanders frog

crocodile turtle lizard snake chameleon

D- Birds- lay eggs, have wings, are covered with feathers and have lungs for breathing.

Identify these birds. Write: crow – chicken – parrot – penguin – eagle

___________ ______________ _____________ ______________ _____________

E- Mammals- have lungs for breathing, most are covered with fur or hair, and give birth to young

ones. Identify these mammals. Write: bat – rat – sheep – whale – monkey

____________ ____________ ____________ ________________ _____________

Q. Complete the animal classification. Use the words in the box.

amphibians – insects – vertebrates – mammals – fish – birds

crustaceans – invertebrates – reptiles – arachnids
