Background
• Russian oil and gas company (Operator) is executing a Plant construction mega-project
• Operator has previously created a Digital Twin at another Plant construction mega-
project using AVEVA solutions
• In order to create a similar Digital Twin at a new Plant Operator developed stringent
engineering data requirements and included them in EPC contract
• Leading Russian engineering, procurement and construction management company (EPC
Co) is participating in a new Plant construction project
• EPC Co decided to deploy EDWS based on AVEVA solutions to comply with Operator’s
contractual requirements

Decision to use a specific pump
Creation of the pump with tag name and attributes in a P&ID master system
Selection of a tag name for the pump and capturing it in a tag list
Issuance of P&ID document with the tagged pump
1
Issuance of a data sheet for the pump with its tag name
Management of change for the pump tag attributes
Modeling of the pump in 3D model with its tag name
NOT EXHAUSTIVE
Issuance of a Purchase Order for the pump with its tag name

Need to fix mandatory attributes
• If mandatory tag
attributes are missing, the
respective tags are moved
to the «Purgatory» for
quick fixing
Ready for publishing
Need to update other attributes
• It is necessary if other
tag attributes have not
been captured in CAD
systems or technical
documentation
• Validated tags and
attributes do not require
any additional work at this
stage
There are 3 typical outcomes of automated tag validation:

EPC Co
• Hands over contractually
required engineering data,
technical documentation
and 3D model
• Fixes errors identified by
Operator
• Does not hand over other
engineering data created
and updated during EPC
project
Operator
• Links engineering data with
technical documentation
and 3D model
• Automatically checks
engineering data
• Will get a complete set of
validated engineering data by
the date of Plant handover to
Operations

First Results

• Project completed on budget and on schedule
• Completed first handover of engineering data to Operator using EDW
• Found and fixed errors in tag registers that were previously handed over to Operator
• Identified errors in engineering data delivered by suppliers
• Project team started to use visualization and reporting capabilities of Net Portal for
3D model progress tracking and for engineering progress reviews at team meetings
EDW deployment completed on 29-11-2019:
Lessons Learned

• Operator developed engineering data
management requirements and
procedures BEFORE signing EPC contract
• EPC Co had engineering data management
competencies prior to the beginning of
EDWS deployment
• EPC Co appointed one of directors to be in
charge of the project
• EPC Co had to put a lot of efforts into
development of internal processes and
managing resistance to change
• Globally, there is lack of skilled engineering
data management professionals. Hiring
right people with right skills takes time
