Assistant Professor Dept of Nutrition and Dietetics Editors Note: History of the Department Vision Mission Objectives Hands-on Training on “Fruit and Vegetable Preservation”: We take immense pleasure in releasing the News Letter for the academic year 2013-2014. The Department of Nutrition and Dietetics has performed various activities in this academic year with an aim to render nutritional services to the community. Various extension activities were organized to create awareness on the nutritional concepts. The students were given opportunities to improve their knowledge about the current trends in this field through various guest lectures, workshops, extension activities and motivated them to participate in various National Conferences and Workshops conducted by other institutions. The Department of Nutrition and Dietetics was started in the year 2003 with B. Sc Food Science and Nutrition with Computer Applications with well equipped laboratories. Post graduate course in Food and Nutrition was started in the year 2004. The department is also offering Master of Philosophy in Food and Nutrition from the year 2005. The Department has well qualified and experienced faculties. About 89 students are pursuing their higher studies in the Department. To educate and mould more scholars in the field of Nutrition and Dietetics with its vast scope and versatile applications in our field of study. To enhance the overall personality of our students by providing quality education, internship training and research facilities To inculcate healthy lifestyle aspects in the mindset of students and explore them to be good nutritionists. To motivate students in developing highly affordable therapeutic food products. To create awareness and render nutrition service to the communityActivities of the Department The Department of Nutrition and Dietetics has conducted a five days short term training programme on Fruit and Vegetable Preservation from 24th – 28th June 2013. Mrs. M. Anandhi, Demonstration Officer and Mr. Ganesh, Demonstrator from Community Food and Nutrition Board, Madurai trained the students to prepare squashes, jams, jelly, pickle, fruit cheese, chutney, tomato ketchup and low cost healthy recipes like weaning food laddu, kitchadi, wheat - besan omlette, sprouted green gram and vegetable salad and tuity fruity. The products prepared were labeled and kept for display during the valediction of the training programme. The participated students said that this training programme was very informative and useful. They also added that it helped them to improve their preservation techniques and created a self confidence to become entrepreneurs. Hands-on Training on “Fruit and Vegetable Preservation”:

We take immense pleasure in releasing the News Letter for the academic year 2013-2014. The Department

of Nutrition and Dietetics has performed various activities in this academic year with an aim to render

nutritional services to the community. Various extension activities were organized to create awareness on

the nutritional concepts. The students were given opportunities to improve their knowledge about the

current trends in this field through various guest lectures, workshops, extension activities and motivated

National Nutrition Week Celebrations

“The National Nutrition Week” was celebrated to promote the aspects of

food security and safety, nutrition and health which is essential for a

prosperous life.

The “Nutrizeal Association” of Department of Nutrition and Dietetics has

celebrated the National Nutrition Week from 2nd- 6th September 2013.

The theme of the NNW for 2013 is “Food Security for Healthy Life”.

On 2nd September 2013, The National Nutrition week celebrations were

inaugurated by Dr. S. Premakumari, Dean, Faculty of Community

Education and Entrepreneurship Development, Avinashilingam Institute

for Home Science and Higher Education for Women, Coimbatore. Dr. P.

R. Muthuswamy, Principal, Dr. N. G. P. Arts and Science College,

Coimbatore and Dr. K. Durairaj, Vice-Principal felicitated the occasion.

Following this, Nestle Cookery Competition was conducted for both

students and faculty.

On 3rd September 2013, several interdepartmental competitions such

as Poster Presentation, Guess Me – Slogan, Mystery Foods, Role Play

and Nutri Quiz were conducted.

A Food and Health Expo was also organized on the themes cereals,

pulses, milk and meat products, fruits, vegetable and nuts, fats and

sugars to disseminate health and nutrition information on 4th September

2013.

On 5th September 2013, as an extension activity, a nutrition and health

education programme on The Importance of Breakfast in Boosting

Memory of the School Children has been conducted to the higher

secondary school children of Kalapatti Government Higher Secondary

School, Coimbatore by our students.

The valediction of the National Nutrition Week Celebration was

organized on 6th September 2013. The valedictory address was given

by Dr. R. Kathiravan, Designated Officer, Food Safety and Standards

Authority of India (FSSAI), Coimbatore. The valediction was felicitated

by our beloved Vice Principal Dr. K. Durairaj.

The Department has conducted a guest lecture entitled “Probiotics and

its Application in Foods" by Dr. Lalitha Ramswamy, Head - Department

of Nutrition, Food Service Management and Dietetics, PSG College of

Arts and Science, Coimbatore on 26 July 2013.

The Department has conducted a guest lecture entitled "Woman and

Nutrition: An Overview" by Dr. N. Sabitha, Head-Department of

Nutrition and Dietetics, Vellalar College Women, Erode on 27 January,

2014.

National Dietetics Day Celebrations:

The “National Dietetics Day” was celebrated on 10th January 2014.

Dr. M. Guhapriya and the students of II M. Sc. Foods and Nutrition

enlightened the life science students on Anemia, its causes, signs and

symptoms, prevention and dietary intervention.At the end, a pamphlet

bearing the information about anemia was distributed to them.

Along with the Department of Clinical Lab Technology, our Department

has conducted a health Camp to all I year Undergraduate and I year Post

Graduate students from 17th to 19th February 2014.

The students of II B.Sc, III B.Sc, I M.Sc and II M.Sc were taken to Sakthi

Soya, Soya Processing Unit, Pollachi on 30 August, 2013 accompanied

by the faculty members - Dr. M. Guhapriya, Dr. K. Arulmozhi, Mrs. S.

Sheela and Mrs. V. Krishna Prabha. The students had a practical

exposure on processing of soya and its products.

The students of II B. Sc. Food Science and Nutrition (CA) have tended a

value added course on Bakery and Confectionary from 26 September -

1 October 2013.

The students of III B. Sc. Food Science and Nutrition (CA) and I M. Sc.

Food and Nutrition have attended a value added course on Food Safety

Management Systems on 22 & 23 January, 2014.

The Students of II M.Sc., Food and Nutrition attended "Commercial

Preparation of spice powder and Extruded Products" at Tamil Nadu

Agricultural University, Coimbatore on 13 and 14 March 2014.

Freeda Thomas and Yumnum Moni Devi of II M.Sc Food and

Nutrition won the first prize in the Quick Food competition conducted

by the department of Information Technology of Dr. N.G.P. Arts and

Science College, Coimbatore.

Ms. Abinaya Arumugam, I B. Sc., Food Science and Nutrition (CA)

won II prize in Tamil Poetry competition organized in connection with

Independence Day, 2013.

Ms. K. Rekhakrishna, I B. Sc., Food Science and Nutrition (CA) won

III prize in solo singing competition organized in connection with

Independence Day, 2013.

Ms. P. Ramya, I B. Sc., Food Science and Nutrition (CA) won II price

in 200 m running conducted during Sports day of Dr. N.G.P. Arts and

Science College, Coimbatore.

Ms. P. Ramya, I B. Sc., Food Science and Nutrition (CA) won I price

in relay (4 x 400 m) conducted during Sports day of Dr. N.G.P. Arts

and Science College, Coimbatore.

Ms. Moniksha T. of I M.Sc., won first prize in Mehandi Competition

conducted as part of "Women's Day" celebrations in the campus.

Dr. D. Sridevi completed her doctorate and was awarded with the

same during January 2014.

Ms.A. L. Iswarya has won the second prize for paper presentation in

the Food Expo conducted by TNAU on 20 and 21 September.

Ms. Sindhu S. has qualified the National Eligibility Test (NET) for

lectureship conducted on June, 2013.

elected as the Vice- Chair Person of the Student's Council for this

academic year.

Ms. L. Bharathi II M. Sc. Foods and Nutrition has participated and

presented a poster in the UGC Sponsored National Level

Seminar on “Burnout Syndrome” at Morning Star Home Science

College,Angamaly, Ernakulam, Kerala on 16 and 17 August

2013.

In the Food Xplore-13, organized by TNAU, Coimbatore on 20 and

21 September, 2013 the students of II M.Sc presented five oral

papers and seven posters. The undergraduate students of the

department participated in competitions like poster, food quiz and

model making.

The students of II M. Sc. Foods and Nutrition has attended a

workshop conducted by PGS College of Arts and Science,

Coimbatore and National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad from 22 –

24 January 2014.

Dr. D. Sridevi has given a lecture on “Nutrition on Occupational

Health” on 19 July 2013 at K.P.R. Mills, Neelambur.

She presented a diet awareness programme in “Pudhivai

Kalanzhiam” in the Pondicherry Podhigai Channel on 25-06-2013

and 26-06-2013 as a consultant.
