Greetings from the Southland By: Trevor Bacon
With summer winding to a close, I am not only amazed that we are already entering September of 2009, but also what all has taken place in my life this year with the Southern Oregon Chapter of the Porsche Club. I have loved Porsches since I first knew what a car was. I used to ride my bike to the grocery store from the time I was about 10 years old to buy the latest edi-tion of Car and Driver, Motor Trend, Road & Track or whatever other publication had an article on Por-sches. I admit it, I am a FANATIC about these cars! Fast forward quite a few years later and I've achieved my dream through a Cayman S. I always planned to make my first Porsche a 911, of course, until I drove the Cayman and I have no regrets! In fact, I urge many of you to check out the latest October issue of Motor Trend, where they sought to determine the best driver's car in the world. Hint…the Cayman S ranked #1! Anyway, I join the PCA, get to know this incredible group of people, am nominated to be VP (by my wife no less!) and shortly thereafter, I find myself agreeing to also become the Chapter Rep - Whew! While not many people may tend to raise their hand for these positions, all I can say is that for a Porschefile like myself the old saying comes to mind, "do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life". I truly feel blessed to have the opportunity to meet and spend time with so many great people that share the same passion for such a tremendous automobile. We've already had some great events and I thank all of you who have come out to attend. For a number of our members who I have not yet had the pleasure of meeting, I look for-ward to such an opportunity and hope you are taking time to enjoy your Porsche nevertheless.
As we enter my favorite season of the year - Fall, with its cool, crisp days and beautiful colors - I look forward

to a number of excellent events on the horizon. Check our website at http://cas.pca.org for the most up to date calendar of events and info. We welcome newcomers and seasoned vets alike, and I look forward to sharing many more incredible experiences with each of you in the months to come!

So Chapter - Crater Lake Tour By: Trevor Bacon
With the Southern Oregon tempera-tures continually reaching around 100 degrees on the mercury mark, what better way to beat the heat than a drive up to the beautiful higher alti-tudes of Crater Lake! That’s exactly what the Southern Oregon Chap-ter of the Cascade Region took advantage of on Satur-day, August 22
nd.
And what a turnout it was! We had almost 20 cars meet at Barnes & Noble of Medford at departure. We had a few members show up in their Porsches to give us a send off, but for various reasons couldn’t make an en-tire day of it and join us for the drive. Nevertheless, we enjoyed the opportunity to meet some new members, see some faces we haven’t in a long time and admire some beautiful automobiles by our favorite marque. Furthermore, we had some of the group from Klamath Falls make the trip up via Hwy 97, as well as another member who was going to join us up there – all of which I unfortunately did not have the opportunity to

greet - but their addition made this one of the highest turnout events of the year.
One of the highlights of this trip was being graced by the pres-ence of our
PCA National Zone Rep, Mr. David Cooley. Coming all the way from Great Falls, Montana, our chapter is the furthest within his territory. Some of us gathered on Friday night at Porters’ Steakhouse in Medford to make his acquaintance over great laughs and conversation – mainly to prepare him for the wild bunch of country bumpkins we are down here, but being from Montana he fit right in!
Upon our departure from Medford, we picked up Cap-tain Wim in Eagle Point, his red 956 in perfect form for this trip. We then made quite an entrance through

Shady Cove as we paraded in perfect, unbroken form down main street through their annual Spam Festival! Yes, you heard me correctly, Shady Cove holds an an-nual Spam Festival! Although we did not stop to taste the fare, we were admired by the numerous townsfolk along the street – all of which I think were in complete confusion by our arrival, but admired the sweet music of 20 flat sixes in symphony.
As we made our way up Hwy 62, we stopped for a photo op at the majestic Rogue River Gorge. While stopped, we waited for Dave “Double Yellow” Duarte to catch up as he realized in Medford he had to go home to get his wallet. We also learned, to our dismay, that we were going to lose fellow comrade, Ross “Never Stop” Rampy to a severely slipping clutch in his 996 of roughly 80,000 miles – a real testament to the durability of Porsche engineering if you knew how he drove!
Pulling out of the parking lot, I found myself in the co-pilot seat of my Cayman S as Mr. Cooley piloted my car

for the duration to the lake – I found the passenger seat to be quite enjoyable, but definitely not on par with the pilot’s seat. We arrived to a gorgeous blue sky and 68 degrees – perfect for a group picnic along the stone wall overlooking a picturesque scene. We thought we had a ranger session planned, but they couldn’t be found as they must have been too busy admiring the plethora of incredible automobiles double-lined in the parking lot like a box of crayons.
After we all breathed in those final moments of moun-tain air and filled the last of our digital camera cards, we parted ways. While some of us returned via the routes we came, a handful of us ventured back along Highway 138 along the Umpqua River into Roseburg, down I-5 where a remaining few of us broke away through Canyonville over the Tiller Canyon Pass into Shady Cove. I continued to enjoy the passenger seat (and my normal co-pilot, Kristi, continued to keep Dave Duarte company as well) while Mr. Cooley piloted my car throughout the remainder of the journey, reminisc-

ing of his time spent years ago in Southern Oregon. The remaining few of us treated him to one last great dinner at Miguel’s on the Rogue.
As we said our goodbyes, we reflected on the incredi-ble turnout, the perfect weather, the gorgeous scen-ery and the incredible roads we are so fortunate to have in our back yard and determined this was an-other successful event. Yet, most importantly, we also sought to make Dave’s visit a memorable one and he assured us that this was one tour he will long remem-ber – we may just win “Chapter-of-the-Year Award”, even if it is nothing more than just bragging rights!

Can you identify this month’s car?
This early model was the first to come after world war two from a famous manufacturer which is still in business today. It had a 2 liter 4 cylinder engine, was very advanced and set the precedent for future cars from the company. It was a massive failure and only 15 were build. We need the name of the car.
Email or call Ole before October 5th with your answer

And from last month, the answer is ….
Allard J2X MK II
Danny Nielsen, John Crisalli and Clinton Sherburne had the cor-
rect answer.
Well done guys !
