HELLO

This Autumn there’s an eclecti c mix of happenings in Derby’s Museums.

At the Museum and Art Gallery we kick off with a thoughtf ul exhibiti on by the sculptor Denis O’ Connor. His work explores noti ons of ‘home’ and ‘displacement’ and are infl uenced by over 25 years of journeying between his home in Derbyshire and his home in Ireland, the country of his birth. Following on in November will be The Curious Contrapti ons of Heath Robinson - an exhausti ve display of drawings and prints capturing this complicated, humorous and very English mind.

At the Silk Mill the spirit of inventi on and problem solving thrives (I’m sure Heath Robinson would have approved). One of our most important events of the year, The thirdDerby Mini Maker Faire takes place in October. It will be our biggest yet and a great opportunity for makers, hackers and arti sts to show off their ingenuity. Throughout November the Derwent Pulse installati on will travel down the World Heritage Site, creati ng beauti ful light sculptures. One of it’s stops is The Silk Mill, as it illustrates the valley that changed the world.

We conti nue to re-develop the Natural History galleries at the Museum and Art Gallery and we sti ll want you to contribute your thoughts and ideas in our ‘project lab’ - as to what makes you ‘Noti ce Nature’ #noti cenature.

If you’re interested in making, writi ng, drawing, thinking or just learning for pleasure, across our sites, there are acti viti es for everyone. The Museum and Art Gallery will be hosti ng a series of late night openings beginning in November - an alternati ve explorati on of discovery through musical performances, spoken word, theatre, fi lm. Also in December our much loved Christmas event at Pickford’s House will see the lovely old building bedecked with decorati ons, singing and making. And remember our shops are a great repository for imaginati ve gift s and stocking fi llers.

Derby Museums are living up to their ambiti ons to be the centre for discovery and curiosity in our city.

Executi ve Director,Derby Museums Trust

De ning a Line: New Sculpture by Denis O’Connor

20 September - 23 NovemberMuseum and Art GalleryFREE

‘For the fi rst ti me in July this year [2011] aft er 25 years of travelling across the Irish Sea, I arrived at the half way point of this ferry crossing and could see Snowdonia to the east and the Dublin Mountains to the west. I asked myself the questi on ‘Where is my home?’ A questi on that is possibly asked by the thousands of Irish ferry travellers who take this journey year aft er year.’- Denis O’Connor

We’re delighted to be showing a new body of work made specifi cally for us by sculptor Denis O’Connor. His small-scale steel sculptures reference the noti ons of ‘home’ and ‘displacement’ and are infl uenced by over 25 years of journeying between his home in Derbyshire and his home in Ireland, the country of his birth. The new work plays with scale and creates a tension between the diff erent sculptural forms, communicati ng opposites such as stable and unstable, comfortable and uncomfortable, real and unreal. Each of these scenarios tries to address noti ons of belonging, identi ty and home, using recognisable domesti c objects such as chairs, ladders and houses. These are oft en subverted or balanced precariously on one another, playing with scale and reality. This is the most inti mate and personal work created by Denis, who is well known for his public art sculptures.

Heath Robinson is back!

Last exhibited at the

Museum & Art Gallery in 1941Our approach to the project is open, experimental and emoti ve, exploring the themes and stories that you suggested. We’re working with you to co-produce the display and help us to share our collecti on in new and interesti ng ways. We’d like the gallery to act as a sti mulant, to excite and inspire you to noti ce nature and connect with your ‘own natural world’. We hope you will leave the gallery full of inspirati on and ideas with a desire to appreciate, take care of, learn about and respond to the natural world around you.

Over the coming months, as we play and experiment with the possibiliti es for the new gallery, we would love you to drop into the project space to test and experiment with prototypes and help shape the design and interpretati on with us.

The collecti on will begin to move in the autumn so there’s plenty of ti me to join us. We’d love to see your nature drawings, photographs, facts and anecdotes. If you’d like to volunteer your ti me, knowledge and experti se please email [email protected]
