Summer 2013 promises tobe a great one for Royal Museums Greenwich. Following our phenomenally successful Ansel Adams

exhibition we open another spectacular photography showcase, Visions of the Universe, a beautiful journey through the most incredible photography of deep space and our night sky, promising to show you the Universe as you’ve never quite seen it before.

Bringing the photos alive we have a season of fascinating lectures from expert astronomers, and events for all ages from hands-on night photography tutorials to family Space Explorer sessions and sci-fi film screenings.

Closer to earth don’t miss our jam-packed family summer holiday programme at the Museum and Cutty Sark, fascinating sessions on family history research, and thought-provoking events to mark International Slavery Remembrance Day.

Meanwhile the Queen’s House continues to showcase the textile work of Alice Kettle and events from performance-art to sewing bees, whilst the Cutty Sark proudly sets sail into its second successful year after reopening.

I do hope you can enjoy a whole day out in the summer sunshine across our sites — don’t forget to ask at ticket desks about a bundle ticket to save you money or, better still, join us as a Member.

Thursday Lates

Sci-Fi film screening:This Island Earth(Joseph M. Newman, 1955)

Thursday 15 August18.45 – 20.45 | £7, Members £5Peter Harrison Planetarium

Starring Jeff Morrow and Faith Domergue, this Technicolor sci-fi bonanza portrays the abduction of Earth’s brightest minds by aliens to assist in an interplanetary war. Classic space opera, featuring space battles, bug-eyed monsters and glaring scientific errors, but also a warning against the expanding use of atomic energy in the 1950s and the misuse of resources. Following the screening, join us for a short talk about the film’s depiction of alien technology and how this reflects society’s changing views of technological advances.

Sci-Fi film screening:It Came from Outer Space(Jack Arnold, 1953)

Thursday 18 July18.45 – 20.45 | £7, Members £5Peter Harrison Planetarium

Written by famous science-fiction author Ray Bradbury, and starring Richard Carlson and Barbara Rush, this was the first film from Universal Studios shot in 3D. The story of peaceful aliens crash-landing on Earth and desperately trying to repair their spaceship before they are discovered by humans is both a cult science-fiction tale and an interesting commentary on the cold-war paranoia of the time. Following the film a short talk will explore the idea of aliens’ attitudes to humans, and the question of what really is lurking ‘out there’. F

See the planet Venus close-up through our enormous 18-tonne Victorian telescope and find out about how our vision of Venus has changed over time. Originally envisioned as a world covered in tropical jungles and filled with dinosaurs, we now know that it is an incredibly harsh environment, scoured by acid rain, scorched by intense heat and crushed by immense pressure. Note: It is possible that dense cloud, rain, or high winds will prevent you from looking through the telescope. Under these circumstances unique footage of Venus taken through the telescope will be displayed on the dome. We are unable to offer refunds.

July screening:It Came from Outer Space(Jack Arnold, 1953)

August screening:This Island Earth(Joseph M.
