Notes for JOHN BUSHROT:Will proved May 5, 1590

John Bushrot is described in his Will as a husbandman from Sherbornein Dorset. A husbandman is a person who cultivates crops and breedsand raises livestock. This description is appropriate as his Will containsbequests for 8 acres of various crops, 36 sheep, and a young cow.

Under the terms of the Will his wife Margery received the use of theestate for three years and thereafter received the residue of the estate. If she remarried within the three-year period, then the overseers of theestate were directed to shift the benefit of the assets described in thespecific bequests for the children from Margery to the children.

The Will contained the following bequests for their children:

· John received 8 acres of crops, a wagon, a featherbed whichoriginally belonged to John Bushrot’s father (no name is provided), tensheep, various household items, including a silver spoon, and hisfather’s clothing, except for his best coat, which he had to wait for threeyears before he could wear.

2

· Richard received £5, ten sheep, and a silver spoon.

· Robert received £5, ten sheep, and a silver spoon.

· Margery received £6, 13 shillings, and 4 pence, but no sheep orsilver spoon.

The son, John, was to receive his bequest three years after his father’sdeath, perhaps because he would soon be 21 years old. The youngerchildren had to wait three years to receive the benefit of their bequests, and they would not get full possession until the earlier of gettingmarried or becoming 21years old. If any child died before takingpossession of their bequest, then the bequest would be divided equallyamong the remaining children.

The will also contains a bequest of two sheep for a god son “John Waye”, two sheep for “Charles Wiffin”, two young sheep for “Luce Dowle”,three shillings and four pence for “John Yetman”, and two shillings forthe parish church of Sherbourne.

Notes for JOHN BUSHROD:"At Bushfield, Wet'd Co., the tomb of John Bushrod bore this inscription:'Herelies the body of John Bushrod, gentleman, son of Richard Bushrod, gentleman, by Apphia his wife. He was born in Gloucester Co., Va., the30th of Jan'y, 1663.He took for his wife Hannah, the daughter ofWilliam Keene of Northumberland, and Elizabeth his wife, and by her heleft two sons and four daughters, and died the 6th of Feb'y, 1719, in the56th year of his age.' (M., II., 151.)" (Virginia Genealogies, p 636, On-Line Genealogy Library database)

The appearance of the name “Washington” in the list of persons buriedat Bushfield provides a tantalizing clue to some interesting familyconnections. Hannah Bushrod was not the only child of John Bushrod(1663-1719) and Hannah Keene (1676-1739). They also had a sonnamed Col. John Bushrod (1712-1760), whose third wife was MildredCorbin (1720-1785). Their daughter was named Hannah Bushrod (1738-1804). She was the niece of the Hannah Bushrod who married AdamCrump. On April 14, 1756, she married John Augustine Washington(January 13, 1735/1736-January 8, 1787), the brother of PresidentGeorge Washington (February 22, 1732-December 14, 1799). Prior tothat, this Hannah Bushrod was mistress at Mount Vernon during GeorgeWashington's bachelorhood. Hannah inherited Bushfield in 1760 uponthe death of her father, Col. John Bushrod. All of Hannah and JohnAugustine Washington children were born at Bushfield. They had a son,Bushrod Washington (June 5, 1762 – November 26, 1829), who foughtin the American Revolution and was a member of the Virginia House ofDelegates. He was also a member of the Virginia convention that in1788 adopted the Constitution. On February 4, 1799, he became anassociate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. In 1801, he inheritedBushfield upon the death of his mother. He sold it in 1804 and moved toMount Vernon, which he inherited after Martha Washington’s death. Hewas one of the executors of George Washington’s estate, and he alsoreceived the following specific bequest:

To my nephew Bushrod Washington, I give and bequeath all the Papersin my possession which relate to my Civil and Military Administration ofthe affairs of this Country; I leave to him also such of my private papersas are worth preserving; and at the decease of my wife, and before; ifshe is not inclined to retain them, I give and bequeath my Library ofbooks, and pamphlets of every kind.Hannah and John Augustine Washington had two daughters, JennyCorbin Washington (d. 1791) and Mildred Washington. JennyWashington, who was called Jane, married William AugustineWashington, the son of her father's half brother Augustine Washington. The youngest child of Hannah and John Augustine Washington wasCorbin Washington (1764-December 10, 1799). Corbin married HannahLee (1765–November 23, 1801) on May 10, 1787 at Bushfield. She wasthe daughter of Richard Henry Lee, a signer of the Declaration of

10

Independence. Corbin Washington had lived for many years at WalnutFarm, originally a part of the Bushfield farm in Westmoreland County, but by October of 1799, he was living at a home called Selby in FairfaxCounty (WAYLAND [1], 125). The following entry was recorded forNovember 5, 1799 in George Washington’s diary (Diaries, 6:374):5th. Morning and the whole day calm--clear & pleasant. Set out on atrip to Difficult-run to view some Land I had there & some belonging toMr. Jno. Gill who had offered it to me in discharge of Rent which he wasowing me. Dined at Mr. Nicholas Fitzhughs and lodged at Mr. CorbinWashingtonsOddly, Corbin died a month later on December 10th and George diedfour days later. There is no mention of Corbin’s death in Washington’sdiary, and he may have been unaware that Corbin had passed. Corbinwas listed as an executor for and a beneficiary of George Washington’sestate, however, his death four days prior to George made theseprovisions moot.

(Note: George and Martha Washington had no children, thus hisproperty passed to his nephews and nieces and their descendants).

John Bushrod and Hannah Keene also had a daughter named ElizabethBushrod, who married William Meriwether. His father, NicholasMeriwether II, was the great great grandfather of Meriwether Lewis, theLewis of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

John Bushrod and Hannah Keene had another daughter named Apphia(who was named after her grandmother, Apphia Hughes, who marriedWilliam Fauntleroy.

Notes for RICHARD DOGGETT:"Richard Doggett was the second surviving son of the Rev. BenjaminDoggett andhis wife Jane, and the first of their children born in Virginia.

12

He is believedto have been born about 1672. As the parish register ofChrist Church Parish in Lancaster county has been lost, no documentaryevidence of his birth date exists. However, Rev. Benjamin, in his willrefers to his '2 sons born in Virginia,' and his birth does not appear inthe register of Hadleigh parish in Suffolk,so we are sure that he wasborn after his mother came to Virginia to join herhusband. Richard isnamed in his father's will as devisee of one hundred acresof land, beinga part of the 350 acre plantation owned by his father. . .The will furtherprovided that Richard, his brother William, and his sister Anne shouldlive with their older brother Benjamin until they could live on their own,and there is some evidence in court records that Richard was in factcared for by Benjamin. In February 1687/8, when Richard was about 15years of age, Benjamin brought a lawsuit in Lancaster County Courtagainst John Boatman, who married Jane Doggett after Rev. Benjamin'sdeath, complaining that Boatman had brokena contract with Richard topay him one-half of the crops produced by Richard laboring in the fieldson Boatman's plantation, for the purpose of providing clothing forRichard's use. The court found that Boatman did in fact owe Richardashare of the corn and tobacco harvested, and ordered that it bedelivered by Boatman to Benjamin so that clothing could be provided forRichard." Letter from John Augustine Washington to Ann Pamela Cunningham, 13March 1858, agreeing to sell Mount Vernon to the Association (seetranscription below):

Mount Vernon, March 13th, 1858

To A "Southern Matron"MadamYour letter of March 12th has been received in which you inform methat the bill providing for the purchase of Mount Vernon by Virginia, hasbeen defeated in the House of Delegates— and in the name and onbehalf of the Mount Vernon Association you renew your offer topurchase this place.Heretofore I have only been willing to dispose of Mount Vernon to theUnited States or to Virginia as I believed that in the hands of one or theother it would be better protected and preserved than in the possessionof any individual or association. The events of the past seven yearshowever, seem to indicate that neither Virginia nor the United Stateswish to acquire the place.Under the circumstances, and believing that after the two highestpowers in our country the Women of the land will probably be the safestas they will certainly be the purest guardians of a national shrine,I am willing so far to comply with your request as to await for aseasonably limited period of time the propositionsyou may wish to make to me on behalf of the Association over whichyou preside. And I assure you that unless these proposals areinconsistent with what I believe to be my duties upon the occasionI shall be inclined to give them the most favorable consideration. Withassurances of the highest respectI have the honor to be your obdt. servt.John A. Washington

"William Jefferson 'Jeff' Gatewood" -- "He was 33 years oldin October of 1868, a lawyer whose father had been anassociate of Abraham Lincoln during the martyredpresident's early years. Gatewood had read his law inIllinois, had served briefly in the war with Mexico in 1847,had joined the mad rush for gold in 1849 at California'sMother Lode, and had later served as district attorney inCalavaras County. He is still best known there for a duel hefought in 1859 in which the county coroner, a Virginian andviolent Southernsympathizer, was killed. Gatewood is stilllisted on the Union-Tribune's editorial page as founder enenthough he spent only six months on the paper after itsbeginning. . .Among San Diego's business leaders was amerchant named Philip Crosthwaite whose half-sister livedin San Andreas and was married to Gatewood...Crosthwaite would visit his sister and also convinceGatewood to moved his Register to San Diego. . .Gatewoodagreed to move. . .the Register to San Diego. He was alsoto get financial support if he stayed in Old San Diego. . .fora year, although the facts of how much and from whom arenot recorded. . .Gatewood agreed the new paper would benon-political. . .No copy of this contract survives, if it waswritten and not oral. But The Union expressed no politicalopinions during its first year." (The San Diego Union-Tribune, 125 Years: A city and its newspaper grew uptogether, 10 Oct 1993 Sunday, Alfred Jacoby)

"He wasknown as Col. William Jeff Gatewood and he hailed

40

from San Andreas, in the gold-mining country of NorthernCalifornia. There he published the San Andreas Register buthe had taken sides in bitter political feuds and business wasnot good. He had killed a man in a duel and he was readyfor a new field. Gatewood's wife was the sister of PhilipCrosthwaite of San Diego. Crosthwaite induced Gatewoodto visit San Diego and Gatewood liked the town. Gatewoodreturned to San Andreas, formed a partnership with EdwardW. Bushyhead, a printer, and together they movedprinting equipment to San Diego. They hired J. N. Brisenoto work for them. . .Gatewood kept his resolve to be aneutral in San Diego politics buthe did take part in therivalry of Old Town, the original settlement, and New Town, the up-and-coming real estate project of Alonzo E. Horton.. .Gatewood favored staying in Old Town. Bushyhead, whodidn't like Old Town, favored New Town. . . Gatewood soldout to Charles P. Taggart and turned to his formerprofession of law." (The San Diego Union, CentennialEdition, 10 October 1968, Arthur W. Spencer, p X-2)

"Before his marriage to Mary Crosthwaite he lost incompetition for the hand of a San Andreas girl. He is said tohave practiced law fortwo years with Charles Hemstead,Mary Crosthwaite's half brother, of Salt LakeCity. He servedas district attorney of Calaveras County. In 1859 Gatewoodhadan argument with a San Andreas physician, Dr.Peterson Goodwyn over Col. E. D.Baker, a spellbindingabolitionist orator who had appeared in the town. Goodwyncalled Gatewood a liar, Gatewood knocked him down,Goodwyn challenged Gatewood to a duel. There is everyindication Gatewood tried to get out of it, but thedoctor'sdemands were too much even for Mary Gatewood. Shebought a bullet andgave it to her husband to show she waswith him in the fight. At 40 paces, with a rifle, Gatewoodshot and fatally wounded Goodwyn. The attorney was withTheUnion only from its founding in the fall of 1868 to thespring of 1869. He sold his interest to Charles P. Taggartthen. . .As a lawyer he handled most of the criminal workhere for many years. . .He was city attorney from 1874 to1876,resigning because of ill health. The oldest documenton file with the County Law Library is a brief written byGatewood. The union reported that on Oct. 1, 1871,Gatewood and his wife Mary celebrated their 14th weddinganniversary in the Old Town home of UndersheriffCrosthwaite and that Don Miguel de Pecroreno was there.Gatewood and Mary never had children. She died Aug. 27,1881. Gatewooddied during the early morning of March 26,1888, and the fuzzy and confused reporting that hascharacterized his story from the beginning until now wasapparent. The Union reported he died on his schooner, theRosita, and that he was about 55. The Daily Bee reported

41

he died aboard the yacht Queen at the foot of a Street andthat he was not quite 58. The graves of Gatewood and hiswife Mary are in Mt. Hope Cemetery not far from the spirewhich marks the burial site of Alonzo E. Horton. Theirgraves are unmarked." (The San Diego Union, CentennialEdition, 10 October 1968, Joe Stone, p X-4)
